Expected nominees for this year’s Golden Globes include Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” and Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking” in drama, while Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and The Daniels’ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” being frontrunners players in comedy. Nominees will also be posted in real time across the Golden Globes’ social platforms as they are announced, and the complete list of nominees will be available on the Golden Globes website after the full announcement. The nominations will air live from 5:35-5:40 a.m.

The 80th Golden Globe Awards nominations were presented on December 12. The 2023 ceremony takes place January 10 hosted by Jerrod Carmichael.

Questions still remain about who will attend and if the Globes still matter, but nominations announced Monday make it clear the show must go on.

Notably out of the top drama lineup were Women Talking and The Woman King—indeed, the Globes did not nominate any female directors or best pictures directed by women. The comedy best-picture race is rounded out by Triangle of Sadness, whose supporting-actress hopeful Dolly de Leon was also recognized, and Netflix’s biggest contender, Glass Onion, which couldn’t get its own acting play, Janelle Monáe, into that same field. The former Old Hollywood epic also contends for three acting awards, including Brad Pitt in a competitive supporting actor category, while Avatar’s visionary found his place among the directing lineup of five.

This is a little surprising and also not at all surprising since the Golden Globes have a long history of embracing Ryan Murphy’s work. The Globes often embrace series that have just started to generate some buzz, and this year, Netflix’s Wednesday is benefitting from that tendency. But this year, the Globes made solid choices on the Musical/Comedy side of the ballot. The Globes’ reputation for snubbing female filmmakers is not entirely earned: They awarded their first woman director decades before the Oscars did (Barbra Streisand for Yentl), and they’ve recently recognized films such as The Farewell and Portrait of a Lady on Fire. (Cruise pointedly returned his Golden Globes at the height of the scandal, which might have put the HFPA off nominating him again.) One intriguing name who did crack the lineup was The Inspection’s Jeremy Pope. You can’t peg all of this on the Globes’ long-standing love for Chazelle: Although La La Land was the winningest film in Golden Globes history, the HFPA did not particularly care for First Man. (Its predominantly female cast may have split votes with each other.) The film did earn screenplay and score noms, so we know the HFPA saw it, but after a good-but-not-great showing with critics’ groups, this late-breaking indie has plenty of ground to make up in the home stretch. So without further ado, the nominees for the 2023 Golden Globe Awards: This is probably the biggest event to honor both films and television programs, and because there's a separate category for comedy/musical, we get more nominees and more winners, some of whom wouldn't make it onto the ballot in the stuffier awards. The event itself is a notoriously interesting affair, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has come under fire in recent years for a lack of diversity in its members, making this, let's say, the Oscars' sloppy little sister.

The Golden Globe nominations are out for 2023, and there were, as always with major award shows, a fair number of snubs and surprises. Like these:

Notes: Ortega, 20, is nominated for best performance by an actress in a television series – musical or comedy for her role in the Netflix series Wednesday. It’s fairly remarkable for a 60-year-old to have a runaway hit with an action film, but he was passed over for a nod for best performance by an actor in a motion picture – drama. Two of this year’s best original song nominees were co-written by the film’s director.
