However, the Lions offense stalled from there, and instead of the going for it on fourth-and-6 from the Vikings’ 39-yard line, Detroit opted to punt. After converting yet another third down, Minnesota had the opportunity to punch it in, but the Lions Isaiah Buggs forced a fumble on Dalvin Cook and rookie Kerby Joseph recovered for Detroit. However, an offsides on the punt, gave the Vikings an extra opportunity to go for it on a fourth-and-1. A pair of Jeff Okudah penalties (unnecessary roughness and pass interference) set the Vikings up at the 1-yard line and Cook punched it in to tie the game. But the Lions made the Vikings pay for the aggression, and Dalvin Cook was stopped for no-gain, giving the Lions the ball at Minnesota’s 46-yard line. With the end of the first quarter, Detroit took the extra time to ponder their decision.

The Lions have to be one of the best fake punt teams in NFL history. Yet, the Lions were the team that was ready for a fight. But nothing was more gutsy—and, essentially, rewarding—than the play to put Penei Sewell in position to win the game. And instead of being over reliant on a run game that wasn’t working, they extended the drive with clutch passes on third down. With Detroit nursing a two-score lead with 10:47, they orchestrated a 12-play drive that ate up 6:41 of the clock. Moore for an incredible run on a play that the Vikings didn’t even do a horrible job defending. Elsewhere, Kalif Raymond continues to be a weapon in the punt return game. On a normal day, that would be enough to give this unit a C grade or higher, but unfortunately, Kirk Cousins spent the rest of the game picking on this secondary. Speaking of which, the Lions suddenly have a cavalcade of weapons at receiver. He basically did the exact same thing on his biggest play of the game: a sack of Dalvin Cook (yes, you read that right). The Lions are even starting to trust them more when it comes to pass protection, although that is still very much a work in progress. With that win, the Lions have turned playoff talk that seemed premature and incredibly lofty a few weeks ago into a legitimate discussion.
