Evans is not the best receiver in the NFL by any measure but he is the best wide receiver on Tampa’s roster and the fact the Buccaneers, whether it be Byron Leftwich or Tom Brady, just refuse to throw him the ball is confounding. He has set the NFL record for consecutive thousand yard seasons to start a career, with the most touchdowns in Tampa Bay Buccaneers history and somehow all I feel is bad for him. This is a simple but prudent example of putting your players in positions to fail, the exact opposite of what a good coach is known for doing. The Buccaneers have a good kicker, a very good kicker, Succop’s style is accuracy, not leg strength. The defense has had a propensity to struggle against offenses with some elements of ‘razzle dazzle’ and Kyle Shannon’s offense embodies those elements as much as any.

With 2:48 left in the third quarter, the Buccaneers finally found the end zone. Unfortunately, Samuel had to be carted off the field, and it appears to be serious injury suffered by the San Francisco star. One bright spot for the Bucs was Deven Thompkins. Earlier on that opening drive, a fantastic safety blitz by Keanu Neal was negated for a helmet–to–helmet hit on San Francisco's quarterback, Brock Purdy. With San Francisco marching down the field yet again, Buccaneers’ defensive end Anthony Nelson dropped into coverage and picked off Purdy. It didn't appear to be clear whether he was able to regain possession prior to getting both feet in bounds.

Rookie running back Rachaad White led the Bucs with 50 yards rushing on 13 carries, while Chris Godwin had a team-high five receptions for 54 yards. It looked like the Bucs were going to hang with the 49ers early, after answering San Francisco’s opening-drive touchdown with a 66-yard scoring toss from Brady to a wide-open Mike Evans. His only score came on a ricochet pass that bounced off a 49ers defender and into the arms of Russell Gage, who fell into the end zone for the touchdown.
