Denver quarterback Russell Wilson exited Sunday's loss to Kansas City early in the fourth quarter after he was slammed to the ground on a scramble.

Because he is in the league's concussion protocol, Wilson will have to achieve several benchmarks to first return to practice and then to play in a game, including exams from an independent physician. He finished the game 4-of-8 passing for 16 yards and the score as the Broncos have now lost 14 consecutive games to the Chiefs dating to September 2015, when Peyton Manning was their quarterback. It was Wilson's first game with three passing TDs for the Broncos in a season during which he and the offense have struggled mightily to construct scoring drives. He was taken to the injury tent on the sideline and then to the Broncos' locker room. We want to win that game and we had a chance to.'' The Broncos, who had trailed 27-0 in the second quarter, were trying to make it a one-score game when Wilson was injured. ... We've got to finish, we had opportunities to continually win that game ... The Broncos entered the game with the league's lowest-scoring offense at 13.8 points per game. He stayed there for a few moments and appeared woozy when the team's medical staff helped him to the sideline. "(He was) putting his body on the line, man. "Yeah, man, frustrating, frustrated I didn't get it done,'' Rypien said. But it still amounted to Denver's eighth loss of the season by seven or fewer points, as the team was officially eliminated from playoff contention.

Russell Wilson leaves game vs. Chiefs with concussion: What's next for Broncos QB? Dec 11, 2022; Denver, Colorado, USA; Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Darius.

That it has taken this long to so prominently feature Jeudy, clearly the team’s most electric playmaker, speaks to the overall issues Denver’s offense has had in 2022. The Broncos’ best offensive performance of the season was centered on wide receiver Jeudy, whose three touchdown catches Sunday matched his total during the team’s first 12 games (Jeudy missed two of those due to injury). Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett confirmed after the game that Wilson had entered the league’s concussion protocol.

The 34-year-old quarterback hit his head on the turf at the end of a fourth-quarter scramble during the Broncos' loss to Kansas City.

We had opportunities to continually win that game and I appreciate that, but — and that is kind of that moral victory — but we want to win the game and we had a chance to.” The Broncos fell behind the Chiefs (10-3) by a 27-0 margin in the first half before Wilson started a rally with a touchdown pass to Jeudy with less than two minutes left in the second quarter. An undrafted free agent out of Boise State who is the nephew of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Mark Rypien, Brett Rypien completed 4 of 8 passes Sunday for 16 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Four plays after Wilson departed, Rypien threw a fourth-down touchdown pass to wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, who scored for the third time in the game. Denver Coach Nathaniel Hackett said after the game that Wilson, who threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns, was in the concussion protocol. The longtime Seattle Seahawks star, in his first season with the Broncos, remained down on the field for several moments as teammates signaled to the sideline for medical attention.

'The guy's out there battling his a** off': Russell Wilson, Broncos ... (DenverBroncos.com)

"That, to me, is somebody I want to follow," Brett Rypien said of Wilson after the game.

"To be able to overcome a deficit like that, and [have] nobody blink, and everybody continually fight for each other, it is something great to see and it's something that we preach," Hackett said. The Broncos did not allow points on four consecutive possessions, and they picked off Mahomes twice in the first half to cut the halftime deficit to 27-14. After Kansas City scored on its first four possessions of the game to race out to a 20-0 lead, Denver's defense settled in. That was an absolutely clutch play to make in the back of the end zone to Jerry. In all, Denver posted its best point total of the season and just its third 20-point output of the year. The Broncos, missing their franchise quarterback, were unable to cap the comeback. I appreciate that, and that is kind of that moral victory, but we want to win the game. "He was fighting the whole game," Hackett said. "One of the hardest things to do in this game is for a quarterback that has just been standing on the sidelines, hasn't gotten a lot of practice all week, and he has to go out there and he has to execute and win a game for you. After the game, Hackett agreed that the stretch was the best the Broncos have played this season. Quarterback Russell Wilson, meanwhile, threw for 247 yards and tossed three touchdown passes for the first time this season. We had opportunities to continually win that game.
