Phillies Rumors Tracker: Mets sign Kodai Senga (Phillies Nation)

The 2022 Baseball Winter Meetings in San Diego opened Sunday, December 4 and ran through Wednesday, but the stove remains hot.

Realmuto Is On Path To Be Greatest Catcher In Phillies’ History](https://www.philliesnation.com/2022/11/j-t-realmuto-is-on-path-to-be-greatest-catcher-in-phillies-history/) [Meet ‘Frankie Two Scoops’, The Most Beloved Man At Citizens Bank Park](https://www.philliesnation.com/2022/11/meet-frankie-two-scoops-the-most-beloved-man-at-citizens-bank-park/) It was both preposterous and sensible for a franchise that wandered in the desert for a decade only to this year taste a magical October that bled into a bittersweet November.Matt Gelb of The Athletic on how the Phillies landed Trea Turner Bogaerts, in the opinion of a number of clubs, is the best hitter among the big four shortstops. Turner could’ve played shortstop for the Padres in 2023, batting in front of Juan Soto, Manny Machado and (eventually) Tatis Jr.Buster Olney on the offer the Padres made to Trea Turner. The Phillies had a limit to how much they’d offer, but there was enough momentum in the talks to know a match was possible — even if they were outbid. That’s because the Padres, the Phillies believed, had the highest offer on the table for Turner. Rosenthal also mentions that the San Diego Padres maintain interest in Turner. But not only did San Diego outbid the Phillies, according to industry sources, their offer would’ve made Turner the highest-paid shortstop in baseball — beyond the $341 million that Francisco Lindor got from the Mets, and that the Padres previously gave to Fernando Tatis Jr. A possible Phillies starting pitching target is off the board. But, indirectly, the Phillies believed they were always Turner’s first choice. Martino, along with other insiders, [reports](https://twitter.com/martinonyc/status/1601795612181250048?s=20&t=MNMy0zTI58AHVar-9cwstA) that the deal is for five years, $75 million. Nobody could have predicted that Bogaerts would get $280 million, $20 million less than the Phillies paid Turner.

Kodai Senga, one of Cubs' offseason pitching targets, joining Mets (NBC Sports Chicago)

Kodai Senga, one of the Cubs' pitching targets this winter who hit the open market after a decorated career in Japan, has agreed to a deal with the Mets.

Senga has agreed to a five-year, $75 million deal with the Mets, SNY’s Andy Martino reported. Mets To Sign Kodai Senga (MLB Trade Rumors)

If that wasn’t enough, the Mets further bolstered the relief corps by signing [David Robertson](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/roberda08.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) and acquiring [Brooks Raley](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/raleybr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) in a trade from the Rays. [implied](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/12/wolfe-senga-has-received-five-plus-year-offers.html) that as many as a dozen MLB teams had checked in on his client. However, with the Winter Meetings only just passed, New York has already addressed most of those holes by re-signing Diaz and Nimmo, and replacing that trio of starters with [Justin Verlander](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/verlaju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral), [Jose Quintana](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/q/quintjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral), and now Senga. With the Mets already in uncharted financial territory, even more big moves could possibly be in store for Cohen and GM Billy Eppler. The rotation now looks completely set with [Max Scherzer](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/scherma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral), Verlander, Senga, Quintana, and [Carlos Carrasco](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/carraca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) making up the starting five. Since this is the Mets’ second consecutive year of tax overage, they’ll face a two-time repeater penalty, as well as a 90 percent overage tax on any dollar spent beyond the $233MM mark. There is no further posting fee involved in the Mets’ costs, since Senga became a full free agent after [exercising](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/10/kodai-senga-to-trigger-opt-out-and-become-free-agent.html) an opt-out clause in his contract with Nippon Professional Baseball’s Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks. Senga’s contract also has no-trade protection and an opt-out clause following the 2025 season, as per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal ( [via](https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/1601799481175019523) [a new five-year deal](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/12/kodai-senga-has-2023-opt-out-in-new-softbank-hawks-contract.html) with the Hawks, but with the important proviso of the opt-out clause that he was widely expected to use, assuming he amassed the necessary service time needed for full free agency. The right-hander’s resume includes five Japan Series titles with the Hawks, three NPB All-Star appearances, two placements on the Pacific League’s Best Nine team, and (outside of league play) an Olympic gold medal with Japan’s baseball team in 2021. Between Senga’s potential and the overall demand for pitching this offseason, it isn’t surprising that multiple teams were monitoring his market.

Mets add Japanese ace Kodai Senga as spending spree continues ... (The Athletic)

Teams, like the Mets, that met with Senga and came away impressed from the encounter liked him on two main grounds: the stuff and the story.

The knock on Senga is that he will likely need to better develop a third pitch or breaking ball. On the first pitch of the encounter, Senga got Jones to ground out, but he wasn’t happy with the result. After meeting Senga in New York City with other Mets officials last month, Mets manager Buck Showalter talked over the phone to Koji Uehara, one of his former pitchers, with Uehara’s wife translating. Senga is coming off another terrific season for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Nippon Professional Baseball in which he went 11-6 with a 1.94 ERA. The splitter, which he uses about 20 percent of the time, checks in around 85 mph, and he wields it to induce both whiffs and weak contact. With Scherzer, Verlander, [Jose Quintana](https://theathletic.com/mlb/player/jose-quintana-pc7zmjdmPuuaUoGl/), [Carlos Carrasco](https://theathletic.com/mlb/player/carlos-carrasco-meFbeWcvNDnLmwYF/) and [David Peterson](https://theathletic.com/mlb/player/david-peterson-PTucgNWQbcb89nSe/)/ [Tylor Megill](https://theathletic.com/mlb/player/tylor-megill-6UBwzsH9mc45g1Y1/), it was quite good. That combo will be tough because the splitter starts so high he can get you to chase the high fastball or splitter down. [Phillies’](https://theathletic.com/mlb/team/phillies/) (12.7) and [Braves’](https://theathletic.com/mlb/team/braves/) (13). “The stuff is major-league stuff.” Split-fingers are common in Japan, but one scout said that the one Senga throws may be “the best in the world.” When outfielder Stefen Romero, a major-league free agent who spent five seasons in Japan, first caught a glimpse of it, he swung, missed, and as he retreated to the dugout said, “How do these guys even touch that ball?” The Mets committed a decent amount of money to Senga — there was no posting fee, but the total amount is third among starting pitchers, behind only Verlander and For a few reasons, the Mets always made sense as a landing spot for Senga, 29.

Mets Will Add Japan's Kodai Senga on 5-Year, $75 Million Deal (The New York Times)

Kodai Senga will bring his “ghost fork” pitch and his championship pedigree to the Mets in a deal that will push the team's 2023 spending past $400 million.

Senga asked to be posted after the 2019 and 2020 seasons, but was turned down by the Hawks, the only team from Nippon Professional Baseball that has not posted a player in the current system. to that of a “Friday night pitcher” in college baseball. Also, the size of the baseball itself is a bit smaller in Japan. The Mets also extended Díaz (five years, $102 million) on the largest contract ever given to a relief pitcher. He is a longtime admirer of Yu Darvish, a starter for the San Diego Padres who also began his career in Nippon Professional Baseball. “You’re always thinking about the load of pitching every fifth day compared to the other one, but they said that about some really good Japanese pitchers that came over here and did well. In 11 Nippon Professional Baseball seasons with the Hawks, Senga was 87-44 with a 2.59 E.R.A. Combined with the other tiers of the luxury tax, the Mets would currently be expected to add around $80 million to the team’s 2023 payroll, for a combined outlay of more than $400 million — by far the most total dollars spent on an M.L.B. Cohen, the owner of the Mets, took that as a compliment. In 2022, he was 11-6 with a 1.94 E.R.A. His contract, which has yet to be finalized but was confirmed by a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity, will push the team far deeper into the Cohen Tax. When Major League Baseball’s owners tried to curtail overspending by creating a third tier of the luxury tax, it was immediately nicknamed the Cohen Tax.

Kodai Senga, Mets agree on 5-year, $75 million contract, sources say (ESPN)

Right-hander Kodai Senga, 29, and the Mets are in agreement on a five-year, $75 million contract, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN, ...

Senga's desire to be with the Mets, along with a contract that does not include a posting fee because Senga had earned full free agency, helped win the day. Senga, who receives an opt-out after the 2025 season and a full no-trade clause, is the latest beneficiary. Currently, the Mets' competitive-balance-tax payroll -- calculated by adding the average annual value of all their deals -- is estimated to be around $345 million. The signings pushed the Mets to uncharted waters for baseball payrolls, where the top have always hovered around the $300 million range. All told, the Mets are facing a $76.2 million CBT bill and a total payroll in excess of $421 million. Senga, 29, starred over 11 seasons with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Nippon Professional Baseball, going 104-51 with a 2.42 ERA in 1,340⅔ innings over 275 starts.

Mets land Japanese ace Kodai Senga on 5-year, $75M contract (CBS News)

It is the latest big move for free-spending owner Steve Cohen and the busy Mets during a dizzying week of free agent signings.

Quintana, another experienced starter ticketed for the rotation, signed a $26 million, two-year deal. Senga, a hard-throwing right-hander, did not have to go through the posting system with the Japanese big leagues because he has 11 seasons of service time. He tossed three scoreless innings in two outings for Japan against the U.S. But a good pitcher is a good pitcher." Throw in Díaz, who re-signed before other teams were permitted to negotiate with him, and it's $461.7 million to six free agents this offseason — five pitchers. Senga figures to slot into the middle of a revamped rotation headed by three-time Cy Young Award winners Max Scherzer and

Scouting Report On New Mets Righthander Kodai Senga (Baseball America)

The Mets have agreed to sign Japanese righthander Kodai Senga to a five-year, $75 million contract, bolstering their rotation with one of the top pitchers ...

The Future: Senga has the stuff to be a No. He shows average control when he keeps his delivery simple and straightforward. But he has consistently performed at a high level when he's been on the mound, including this past season when he went 11-6 with a 1.89 ERA and 156 strikeouts against just 49 walks in 144 innings for the Hawks. Senga frequently modifies his tempo and delivery to add deception but sacrifices control when he does. He missed most of 2014 with a shoulder injury, was limited in 2021 by a severe ankle sprain and has periodically experienced elbow soreness throughout his career. The 6-foot righthander was the ace of Softbank's four consecutive Japan Series championship teams from 2017-20 and helped lead Japan to the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 with three scoreless innings over two outings against Team USA.
