And, capping off her exceptional year, in November Ms. Carlile, 42, brought her hero, Joni Mitchell, on stage for Ms. Her memoir, “Broken Horses,” released last year, became a worldwide bestseller.

We knew entering this Saturday Night Live that Brandi Carlile was going to be the musical guest. Tonight, she performed "The Story."

She didn’t rely at all on elaborate staging or a lot of bravado; instead, it was really just about her voice and the musicians all around her. This is a musical performance that we’re absolutely going to remember through the rest of the season and we’ll go back and watch it again at some point down the road. So what did she bring to the stage?

Milwaukee-born sisters Chauntee and Monique Ross capped off a monumental first year playing in Brandi Carlile's band playing on “Saturday Night Live.”

Carlile's four-piece string section was a star attraction for her first of two performances on the show Saturday, with the Ross sisters, Kyleen King (viola) and Josh Neumann (cello) tenderly playing underneath Carlile's cracking voice at the song's start, and providing cathartic sweep leading into the epic song's rocking bridge. The Ross sisters witnessed the historic return of Joni Mitchell from the stage of the Newport Folk Festival this summer, performed live on the Grammys and for a live IMAX concert, and played scores of large venues across North America, including Madison Square Garden and Carlile's first arena show in Milwaukee at Fiserv Forum. While guests typically use the “SNL” spotlight to push their current projects, Carlile opted for her 2007 breakthrough “The Story,” having already played “Right on Time” and “Broken Horses” in her first go ’round. Indie pop duo Lucius was on hand to sing their parts on the stripped-down soft rocker that saw Carlile shuffling around the stage and wielding a heart-melting falsetto. In somewhat of an unexpected move, Carlile reached back into her catalog for her first song of the night.
