Shortly after Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki finished his Game of the Year acceptance speech and music started playing to close out the show, an unknown individual approached the microphone. However, a strange moment at the end of the show seems to be getting talked about more than any of the awards that were handed out at the event. The Game Awards 2022 saw numerous games take home awards, with four titles winning multiple awards throughout the event.

We got another look at the upcoming Super Mario Bros. It’s a coproduction between Bandai Namco and Amazon Games, and has a surprisingly classic anime look to its characters. Get ready to use all of Aloy’s tools and abilities to get through this new challenge. Tekken 8 is coming, fighting game fans, and it’s bringing back some old favorites like Paul, Law, and Jack-8. New weapons, new armor, and a whole new world is waiting for us next year, and I’m fully prepared to get sucked back into Destiny again. There’s the BioShock hands, the weird BioShock enemies hopped up on a weird drug, and machinery. It plays with perspective and gives some mind-bending Portal vibes for sure. If you’re a fan of either thing, this will be something to check out, and if you’re a fan of both, you are eating well. Gaming’s biggest night has come and gone, leaving with it a collection of discourse and a pile of new trailers for us to watch and re-watch over the holidays.

That’s a sentence you can only type with Kojima games, and I’ve bloody missed it. I won’t, because Infinite was not the game that was promised. I could just copy and paste Ryan’s answer and be done with it, since we share the same praise for Hades and excitement for its unexpected sequel. It released both at a weird time for me personally and for the franchise. The art, the voice acting, the smoothness: yes. I’ve been with Hades since the Early Access days, and it’s one of those old faithfuls that I consistently return to, so the sequel reveal had me more hyped up than I expected. I’m not exactly sure how it’ll all shake out, but it’s the thing that most piqued my curiosity. Armored Core is tough as nails (I’ve sure as hell never beaten it, but I tried before I finished any Dark Souls games), and they’re strapped to old gen consoles. I include myself in that bunch, so I’m allowed to say that. So a leap from its expected formula to a third-person shooter mech suit apocalypse that you don’t need any prior knowledge to get stuck into? I’ve spent over a hundred hours searching for every corner of Remnant’s dynamically-generated worlds in search of powerful gear and grinding out runs through its phenomenal roguelike mode, and I can’t wait to do it all again in Remnant 2. That said, we can't help but feel rising excitement for what the future of gaming has in store.

Immortals Of Aveum is coming in 2023, and brings with it a new chance to be an extremely badass wizard, which really is one of the main driving forces behind the games industry. There’s something about using the bones of a long-dead monster as a ramp that gets me excited, and this trailer certainly had lots of monsters that were big and dead. That seems like a surefire way to ruin the mystique, but there’s little to show what it’ll actually look like when we get to play. And in the seconds that followed, we were treated to a lovely first look at Earthblade, a 2024-slated pixel-art platformer where you control a girl with excellent black-and-silver hair, poke big blobby enemies in the eye, cling onto giant flesh walls, and touch portals to make them light up pleasingly and whisk you away to new areas of a ruined, corrupted Earth. It’s The Last Of Us Part 1, a gripping and emotional tale that just about everyone knows about by now, whether we played it or not back in 2013. After a “brief" intro from Geoff Keighley, the first trailer of the main show treated us to a look at Hades 2, a sequel to the smash-hit from Supergiant Games. From the sheer number of good-looking characters talking into a first-person player camera, it looks like they’re trying to capture some of that immersive next-gen feel of Cyberpunk 2077, with its seamless first-person cinematics. In addition to the spate of customary awards given out throughout the night, this year’s Game Awards was also host to a sizeable number of new game announcements and trailers.
