Carlos Correa in prime free agency position with shortstop-needy ... (New York Post)

It turns out Carlos Correa is very fortunate to have struggled in last year's free-agent market.

The Dodgers still could use a shortstop, but they don’t see Correa as a fit due to his presence on the 2017 Astros, leaving Swanson as their last remaining star chance. The Cubs are looking at both Correa and Swanson, though Swanson seems like the more obvious fit for them since his fiancée, Mallory Pugh, is a star of the Chicago Red Stars soccer club, and he’ll be cheaper than Correa. But they may have trouble fending off the motivated Giants, who still have that $360 million-plus in their pocket and a perceived need to spice up a team that wasn’t particularly interesting in 2022.

New frontrunner emerges in Carlos Correa free agency sweepstakes (Sportsnaut)

Carlos Correa has been linked to a number of teams in MLB free agency, but which franchise is the current frontrunner to land the 2x All-Star shortstop?

With Judge off the board, they could just as easily pivot to retaining free agent starting pitcher Carlos Rodon, but they seem to have placed a higher priority on landing Correa instead. The baseball community had long been waiting on Aaron Judge to make his blockbuster decision in MLB free agency. The reality is San Francisco needs a star and Correa is just that. The Chicago Cubs are also looking to make a big splash as well. As mentioned, the Minnesota Twins are still in the mix after he played there in 2022 and has expressed an interest in returning.

Twins notebook: Carlos Correa's possibly growing market, Nelson ... (The Athletic)

The Red Sox could emerge as a suitor for free-agent shortstop Carlos Correa after they lost Xander Bogaerts to the Padres.

“They showed (the players) on the screen (during the broadcast). Multiple sources said the club considered drafting a position player who wasn’t selected by any other team. Along with their second-rounder, the Twins will have three top-50 picks to help replenish a farm system that was depleted last season by several prominent trades. Cruz said he and Arraez intend to work out together again this winter in the DR and in Venezuela. Already enthralled by the debut of 2022 first-rounder Brooks Lee, the Twins are ecstatic after they moved up eight spots on Tuesday night and landed the fifth overall pick in the inaugural Draft Lottery. He recently had eye surgery after experiencing inflammation in his left eye for more than a year. Ex-Twins slugger Nelson Cruz attended the Winter Meetings as he prepares for the upcoming World Baseball Classic. The Twins haven’t changed their stance as the shortstop market has developed this offseason. Some believe the Twins have a shot. Perhaps the Red Sox look for a cheaper option than Correa as well. Not only might the Red Sox feel pressured to make a move after losing Bogaerts, their latest high-profile departure during Bloom’s tenure, they also can outspend the Twins. The news not only delivered another loss to Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom in an increasingly painful offseason but also provided a window for a potential reunion between Correa and Boston manager Alex Cora, a longtime friend from their days together in Houston.
