Xander Bogaerts and Padres agree to 11-year, $280M deal, source ... (ESPN)

Shortstop Xander Bogaerts and the Padres are in agreement on an 11-year, $280 million contract, a source told ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Boston also needs to figure out the future of star third baseman [Rafael Devers](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/33859/rafael-devers), a 26-year-old who can hit free agency after the 2023 season and is expected to command $300 million-plus. [Trevor Story](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32150/trevor-story) to his natural position at shortstop, though the velocity on his throws, according to scouts, could hinder his effectiveness there a year after he signed a six-year, $140 million free agent deal. The addition of Bogaerts and return of Tatis should supercharge it. While Machado can opt out of his contract following the 2023 season and the Padres are slated to shed nearly $60 million in payroll beyond him with the impending free agencies of pitchers Bogaerts knows what World Series rings look like, nabbing a pair in his 10-year career, during which he has hit .292/.356/.458 with 156 home runs and 683 RBIs while playing at least 136 games in each of his full seasons. The Padres last made the World Series in 1998, getting swept by the Yankees, and have yet to win a championship since their inception in 1969. Boston, typically a team with among the largest payrolls in the game, declined to play anywhere near the financial realm to which the Padres were willing to go. Depleting their elite farm system in a deal for the final 2½ years of Soto's club control? The price of building a championship-caliber team. Bogaerts entered the winter as one of the prizes of a strong free agent class. The signs that Bogaerts could leave Boston had percolated after he rejected a contract extension presented earlier this year. The expectation is that he'll remain at shortstop, with

San Diego stunner: Padres steal Xander Bogaerts from Red Sox ... (USA TODAY)

Longtime Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts has agreed to an 11-year, $280 million contract with the San Diego Padres.

Turner agreed to an 11-year, $300 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. He closed out the season with 171 hits and finished third in the American League batting title race with a .307 average. While those stars will cost a decent chunk in 2023 – roughly $85 million for all four – it does protect the Padres against future defections. In 2022, he set a franchise record for career games played and starts at shortstop. Bogaerts, 30, will receive a full no-trade clause from the Padres, according to a baseball official with direct knowledge of the agreement. Oh, and third baseman Manny Machado is signed to a 10-year, $300 million deal.

Padres, Xander Bogaerts Agree To 11-Year Deal (MLB Trade Rumors)

12:48am: Acee now confirms it's actually a $280MM deal, as initially reported. · 12:19am: It's actually a $275MM guarantee, reports Kevin Acee of the San Diego ...

Somehow, the $137.375MM the Red Sox [spent](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/12/red-sox-to-sign-masataka-yoshida.html) [on](https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/12/red-sox-sign-kenley-jansen.html) [Masataka Yoshida](https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=yoshid002mas) and [Kenley Jansen](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/janseke01.shtml) earlier Wednesday almost seems quaint in comparison to the Bogaerts contract. [Jon Morosi of MLB.com](https://twitter.com/jonmorosi/status/1600726519495950336) reported the deal did not come with any opt-out provisions and included a full no-trade clause. Bogaerts lands one of the largest contracts in MLB history, setting the stage for a fascinating bidding war for the two star shortstops who remain unsigned. [Pete Abraham and Alex Speier of the Boston Globe](https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/12/08/sports/xander-bogaerts-free-agency-padres/?event=event25) report the Red Sox had offered a six-year term worth around $160MM. [had only happened once before](https://twitter.com/jaysonst/status/1600727855528235008) in free agency when [Bryce Harper](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harpebr03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) signed for 13 years. [categorically rejected](https://theathletic.com/3951194/2022/11/29/mlb-free-agent-rumors-padres-astros/) the possibility of Bogaerts moving off the position earlier this offseason. The cost for the Padres goes well beyond the terms of the offer itself. Those failed pursuits of Turner and Judge made the Padres a fascinating wild card this offseason, and while reports initially suggested they were unlikely to dip back into the shortstop market, they pivoted and made a run at Bogaerts. [Jake Cronenworth](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/croneja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) is an above-average defender at second base and owns a .257/.339/.443 mark through his first three seasons. [Ha-Seong Kim](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kimha01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) is a Gold Glove caliber shortstop who had a solid .251/.325/.383 line in his second big league campaign. Bogaerts played well enough to earn MVP votes in each of the four seasons since signing that extension, making it a no-brainer he’d take his opt-out opportunity unless he and the Red Sox could preemptively agree upon a new deal. Bogaerts sustained that new level of excellence, as he’s been a well above-average offensive performer in each of the four years since then.

Padres land free agent shortstop Xander Bogaerts (The San Diego Union-Tribune)

The Padres land star shortstop after not getting Trea Turner, Aaron Judge; Bogaerts gets $280 million over 11 years.

The deal is the longest ever given to a player in his 30s. He spent the first 10 years of his career (2013-22) with the Red Sox. The Padres engaged with Bogaerts’ representatives last month but focused primarily on Turner, meeting with the former Nationals and Dodgers shortstop twice and offering him an 11-year, $342 million contract. This also presumably moves Jake Cronenworth to first base after he primarily played second base the past two seasons. playing in the outfield when his suspension for a failed PED test is over April 20. Those numbers lead all qualifying shortstops in that span, while his 33.9 bWAR trails only Carlos Correa (39.5) and Francisco Lindor (36.6).

[Jake Cronenworth](/fantasy/baseball/players/2447496/jake-cronenworth/)to first base, which also seems like a waste since he's a perfectly capable second baseman. He's a defensive liability but has surprising pop for a 5-foot-9 guy, having hit .296 with 28 homers and a .918 OPS between Double-A and Triple-A last year. It's still possible the Padres bring in a cheap thumper to man first, reducing Kim to more of a utility role. He'll enter 2023 with eligibility there, but possibly for the last time if he returns from his PED suspension in May as a full-time outfielder. His 15 homers last year still made him the ninth-best shortstop in 5x5 leagues and the eighth-best in points, and I rank him similarly for 2023. Shifting him to second base seems like a waste and may ultimately make him less than a full-time player. There was already some danger of that with the new ball (again, middling exit velocities), but this move makes it all the more likely. He had 11 homers and 12 steals in 2022 but also a .251 batting average and .708 OPS. [Padres](https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/SD/san-diego-padres/) finally got their man. His swing was well suited for Fenway Park, delivering middling exit velocities but with a high enough pull rate to take advantage of the Green Monster. Fenway rated as the third-best park for right-handed hitters last year. Long story short, it's not the greatest move for his Fantasy value.
