Insider: Andrew Nembhard has 'masterful' performance when ... (The Indianapolis Star)

In truth, the rookie from Gonzaga authored what is arguably the most important individual performance by any Indiana player so far this season, as these Pacers ...

Thompson burned the Pacers for 28 points with eight 3-pointers, and Poole had 23, but the normally lights-out Warriors were 13 of 44 (29.5%) from 3-point range and a modest 40.4% from the field. The Pacers made a point to switch everything 1-5, so he wasn't forced to chase him around all by his lonesome, but he had to do a lot of the leg work and he was part of the reason Curry had the worst performance of his season so far. They were more effective when they were hitting shots themselves, and they certainly had responses on the offensive end with a 20-2 run in the second quarter that erased a 16-point Indiana lead, a 15-5 run that shrunk a 13-point Pacers lead to three points, and another fourth-quarter spurt that actually gave the Warriors the lead. A night after he had to guard Lillard, he drew the primary assignment of guarding Curry. They play two different speeds and it's kind of different but it's kind of cool because they can both play on the ball and off the ball. The Pacers shot 15 of 23 (65.2%) from the field that period, hitting three 3-pointers, but getting each of their other 12 field goals in the paint for 24 points to take a 34-21 first-quarter lead. "He played well and he was making shots and controlling their offense," said Warriors guard Stephen Curry, the reigning NBA Finals MVP. Nembhard centered the Pacers attack around getting the ball in the paint where the Warriors have had some struggles, giving up 49.3 points in the paint per game to rank 18th in the NBA in the category. Sunday he had 16 points and eight assists on the night the Pacers played without Haliburton for the first time this season, guarding Damian Lillard while also efficiently running the offense, and on Monday he had his masterpiece in San Francisco. The margin of defeat in each of the four was in double figures and two of them were by more than 20 points, altering the trajectory of a season that had been an expectation-defying joyride before they left Indianapolis for seven games in 12 days on the road. He never finished higher than third on his own team in scoring, never averaging more than 11.8 points per game in a season and never scoring more than 25 in a single game. He chased the most prolific 3-point shooter to ever walk the Earth around to start every possession but he rarely seemed out of place on defense and he helped make that All-World player miserable.

3 takeaways as Andrew Nembhard dominates and Indiana Pacers ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Indiana Pacers upset the Golden State Warriors on Monday despite being down multiple key players.

Said group may not work every game, but it certainly did on Monday, and the Pacers needed it. This start against Golden State was their best of the year and first lead of 10+ points after one quarter. They led by eight points after the first quarter once and led by two twice. Everyone who suited up for the Pacers did their job and had a solid night. Indiana was forced to play a drastically altered starting lineup in this game, and it was effective. But Carlisle has to find a way given how impressive the 31st overall pick has looked recently. That way, Nembhard can continue to grow and improve as a floor general, where he is clearly very talented. There are some key takeaways for the Pacers after a much-needed win. That allows him to play and get plenty of playing time, but most of his offensive reps are off ball in those instances. Without him, the Pacers likely don't have a single win on their current trek out West. One Monday later, with the Pacers taking on the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco, Nembhard was even better. On Monday, against the reigning NBA Champions, Nembhard finished with 31 points, 13 assists, and eight rebounds.

"But our guys played with a lot of presence to start the game. Although that may be promising for the Pacers, Curry and co's inconsistent approach to games is alarming. Just last week, in only his 15th game of the season, he swished a buzzer-time three-pointer against the Los Angeles Lakers, with Lebron James only able to watch on helpless. "He was hoopin' and I think that starts in the first half for us," Golden State's Donte DiVincenzo said. Meanwhile, it was Klay Thompson and secondary starter Jordan Poole who attempted, and failed to, orchestrate a comeback. Perhaps even more impressive and noticeable considering his side were without six players due to injury or illness; point guard Tyrese Haliburton was sorely missed for a second straight game as he nurses soreness in his left groin.

The Warriors, who hadnโ€™t lost at home since a visit by Denver in the first week of the season, never recovered, allowing the Pacers to improve to 2-4 on a trek that wraps up Wednesday at Minnesota. The hero of Indianaโ€™s lone win in its previous five games, Nembhard gave the Pacers the lead for good with a 30-foot 3-pointer with 4:26 to go. He then fed Isaiah Jackson for an alley-oop dunk before bombing in another 3-pointer followed by a jumper to give the Pacers a 109-102 lead with 2:36 remaining. Playing without Andrew Wiggins, the Warriors trailed 89-81 entering the fourth quarter, but then stuck a nose in front at 93-92 on a Klay Thompson 3-pointer with 9:25 to play. Facing a team that had won 10 straight at home on the second night of a back-to-back without star Tyrese Haliburton, the Pacers led by as many as 16 points and then, surprisingly, had enough energy to finish off the defending champions. Andrew Nembhard continued a memorable California swing with a personal eight-point flurry as part of a late 13-2 burst that allowed the road-weary Indiana Pacers to shock the Golden State Warriors 112-104 in San Francisco on Monday night.
