Cam Neely says Bruins 'failed' in vetting Mitchell Miller (ESPN)

Cam Neely said the Bruins "failed" in their vetting of Mitchell Miller, who was released days after he was signed. "We dropped the ball," Neely said.

"I think it got down to the point of [whether] we're doing it or not. "The timing of it was never probably going to be good," Neely said. "We dropped the ball, and I'm here to apologize. The Bruins said Sunday that they decided to cut ties with him "based on new information." The team, however, announced Sunday night that it [was parting ways with Miller after intense backlash](/nhl/story/_/id/34969107/boston-bruins-cut-ties-mitchell-miller-outcry) from fans, the team's own players and commissioner Gary Bettman. "I'm extremely upset that we have made a lot of people unhappy with our decision," Neely said Monday.

Boston Bruins president Cam Neely said the organization "failed" in its process to vet controversial prospect Mitchell Miller.

"Initially, I was thinking it was going to be 'OK, this kid deserves a second chance,'" Neely said when asked how he thought fans would respond to the signing. It posted a clarification Monday saying, "We mutually agreed that Mitchellโ€™s best path forward was to be vocal and own what he had done, followed by him finding his voice to speak loudly as a change agent in hockey." Neely played 13 seasons in the NHL โ€“ 10 with Boston. "I thought there would be some people that were going to be upset about it. Neely said he consulted Wednesday with NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly about the Bruins' decision to sign Miller. Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron and forward Nick Foligno were among those who expressed reluctance and displeasure with the move. "I was under the impression it was a 14-year-old kid who made a really, really bad decision and did some horrible things. A right-handed defenseman, Miller posted 83 points in 60 games with the USHL's Tri-City Storm last season. He was allowed to stay enrolled in classes.
