Ham praised the eight-time All-Star selection's toughness in his third season of frequent injury woes: “His back situation is something we definitely need to manage, but it's something that's not going to worsen with what he's doing.” ... We can’t wait until the second half to decide we want to play, and that’s what we did.” McCollum’s jumper trimmed the Lakers’ lead to three in the final minute, but McCollum missed a potential tying 3-pointer with 6.7 seconds remaining, and the Pelicans couldn’t foul before the buzzer. New Orleans appeared to have it wrapped up when We didn’t deserve to win that game, so credit to the Lakers. “As a shooter, once you can get your feet down and you see the rim clean enough, that made it a lot easier.” Ryan attended three universities, went undrafted and worked as a DoorDash delivery driver before he made his NBA debut with one game for Boston last season. [Austin Reaves](http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/4066457/austin-reaves) made a slick crosscourt pass to Ryan, and the newcomer who surprisingly made the Lakers' roster last month drilled a fallaway 3 in front of their bench to force OT. “I'm thrilled for him,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said.

Matt Ryan hit a tying three-pointer at the regulation buzzer as the Lakers rallied to a 120-117 overtime win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday.

They have the right to go out there and play enthusiastically and enjoy the game.” The Lakers had a chance to win only after New Orleans left the door open a crack. A good pass, a good finish — they have the right,” Ham said before the game. Matt did what he do.” [Lonnie Walker IV](https://www.latimes.com/sports/lakers/story/2022-10-13/lakers-nuggets-takeaways-lonnie-walker-iv-impressive-performance) led the Lakers with 28 points, [LeBron James](https://www.latimes.com/sports/lakers/story/2022-10-23/lakers-portland-trail-blazers-lebron-james-missed-shot-recap) and Davis had 20 each and [Russell Westbrook](https://www.latimes.com/sports/lakers/story/2022-10-30/lakers-nuggets-recap-lebron-westbrook-nba) had 13 points, seven rebounds and nine assists off the bench. Defensively, the Lakers continued to show that their athleticism and effort would overcome a lot of their offensive woes. After the Lakers missed a chance to tie in the final seconds, rookie Dyson Daniels (whom New Orleans selected with one of the picks the Lakers traded to them for Davis) missed a pair of free throws to give the Lakers a chance. “The game, you’re in the thick of the game, and each play is a major play, whether it’s a block, a steal or a rebound, a defensive stop. The victory came after the Lakers built a 16-point lead by being at their best and coughed it up by being closer to their worst. This run, like the one led by Westbrook and the Lakers’ bench Sunday, featured the same kind of on-court celebrating that the most confident NBA teams enjoy, a vibe the Lakers sorely missed in their five straight losses to open the season. [Matt Ryan](https://www.nba.com/lakers/team/player-pages/matt-ryan-1630346/), who made the Lakers as the team’s 15th player with a nonguaranteed contract flared to the corner and caught a cross-court inbounds pass from Austin Reaves to sink a tying three-pointer at the regulation buzzer — easily the biggest shot of his young pro career.
