Israel elections: Netanyahu in lead, exit polls say (BBC News)

Former PM Benjamin Netanyahu is set for a dramatic return to power, forecasts say after polls close.

"When [Religious Zionism politician Itamar Ben-Gvir] will be minister of public security, it will be even better - he'll bring back security to the people of Israel. "It will be better now," said Religious Zionism supporter, Julian, at the party's venue in Jerusalem. Likud's ultra-nationalist ally Religious Zionism appears to have won 14 seats, which would make it the third largest party. According to the polls, Likud stands to be the biggest party, with 30-31 seats, commanding a majority with the support of nationalist and religious parties. His possible partners in a Likud-led coalition government have said they would reform the law, in a move which would bring a halt to his trial. He opposes the creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip as a solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict - a formula supported by most of the international community, including the Biden administration in the US.

Another party, the nationalist Balad, broke away from a joint list and attracted voters unwilling to cooperate with Jewish parties. Ahead of the election, Palestinian voters expressed disillusionment with Arab politicians and a Jewish-dominated political system they say marginalizes their communities. That support has not yet translated into enough votes to cross the threshold, however. That figure would represent a 10-percent increase from the last election. Ben Gvir has roots in the overtly racist Kach party founded by a radical American rabbi, Meir Kahane, and banned by Israel. Escalating Israeli raids in the West Bank have put 2022 on track to be the [deadliest year](https://apnews.com/article/middle-east-israel-united-nations-west-bank-peace-process-e7ef5c3b74d71ade2032a8c9dc4a703b) for Palestinians there since the United Nations began keeping records in 2005. The results showed that the left-wing Labor party only narrowly passed the four seat threshold and that the other left-wing party, Meretz, as well as the Arab party, Balad, remained below that number. Projections by all of Israel’s three largest television news channels give a Netanyahu-led bloc between 62 and 65 seats, past the parliamentary majority required in the 120-seat Knesset. The next prime minister!” and “death to terrorists!” His campaign relied on securing the support of smaller parties. Ben Gvir has demanded to be appointed public security minister, which oversees the police. “We’re demanding to make an absolute distinction between those who are loyal to Israel, with whom we have no problem at all, and those who are undermining our precious country,” he said, addressing a packed crowd of predominantly young, religious men, dancing to thumping house music while alternating between the chants, “Ooh-ah!

The international community must push Israeli authorities to immediately cease the forcible transfer of communities in Area C, which continue to witness excessive use of force, property destruction and settler violence. “Israel and its allies in the US, Europe and the Arab world continue to brush off the suffering of millions of Palestinians. NRC urges the Israeli government to reverse its movement restrictions on people and goods in line with international legal obligations to allow sustainable economic recovery and development. This number puts 2022 on track to be the deadliest year on record for Palestinians in the West Bank. That they are not allowed to go farther than an hour’s drive because of the Israeli-imposed siege,” said Egeland. In the occupied West Bank, 118 Palestinians have been killed since the Israeli military launched its new operation on 31 March, including 29 children under the age of 18. It means that for villagers in the West Bank, there are chances that they will get shot at, detained without charge or have their home knocked down. That their children do not know what the outside world looks like. This means that 2022 is projected to match last year’s five-year high in demolitions. “The occupation means that teenagers in Gaza have spent the entirety of their lives under siege and will have known nowhere else because they cannot get out. “I'm alarmed by the rise in tensions in occupied Palestinian territory I witnessed first-hand this week. We need determined international action to secure this does not escalate further,” said Egeland on a visit to the occupied Palestinian territory this week.

But the coalition that Lapid cobbled together, which included the first Arab party ever to join a government, was decimated by infighting and collapsed after just one year in power. He has described Arab colleagues in parliament as "terrorists," called for deporting those who are "disloyal" and recently brandished a handgun in a tense Palestinian neighborhood of Jerusalem as he called on police to shoot Palestinian stone-throwers. Ben-Gvir is a disciple of the racist U.S.-born rabbi Meir Kahane, who was banned from parliament and whose Kach party was branded a terrorist group by the United States before he was assassinated in New York in 1990. The pair have also said they will seek legal reforms aimed at weakening the independence of the judiciary and giving parliament power to override court decisions they don't like. With 80% of the ballots from national elections counted, voters appeared to have given the political veteran — and his far-right allies — a stable majority in the country's parliament. It could also alienate Israeli allies in the U.S., particularly the predominantly liberal Jewish American community. Along with his partners, Ben-Gvir and Religious Zionism emerged as the third-largest party after the voting. "We are on the verge of a very big victory," Netanyahu, 73, told supporters at a gathering in Jerusalem early Wednesday. Ben-Gvir has said he will demand the cabinet post overseeing Israel's police force. Elections officials worked through the night tallying votes and by Wednesday morning, nearly 80% of the ballots had been counted. But if preliminary indications were correct, Israel was poised to seat its most right-wing government, bolstered by a strong showing from the ultranationalist Religious Zionism political alliance, whose members use inflammatory anti-Arab and anti-LGBTQ rhetoric. At an all-male campaign gathering in Jerusalem, religious men wearing Jewish skullcaps and waving Israeli flags danced in celebration.

Netanyahu on brink of comeback as Israeli exit polls point to narrow ... (CNN)

Former Israeli Prime Minister and Likud party leader Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara Netanyahu cast their vote in the Israeli general election on November ...

Both Palestinian attackers were killed, in a cycle of violence that the new prime minister will need to deal with – if, indeed, there is a new prime minister as a result of Tuesday’s vote. As a strategy, it does not seem to have reduced the level of violence: at least one Israeli civilian was shot and killed near Hebron in the West Bank on Saturday, and others were wounded in the same incident – as were two medics who responded, one Israeli and one Palestinian. The cost of living is skyrocketing in Israel as in so many other places, with energy and grocery bills spiking. To determine how many seats each party gets, election officials first need to determine which parties crossed the threshold. Pro-Netanyahu ads – and ads depicting his opponents looking shady – plastered the sides of buses. The exit polls are only projections based on interviews with voters on Tuesday, not official results. That is what we are going to bring,” Netanyahu told CNN in English at his polling station in Jerusalem. The Central Election Committee said that two-thirds of eligible voters cast their ballots by 8 p.m. Nearly half (44%) of Israeli voters said it was the most important factor, well ahead of the quarter (24%) who said party leader was the determiner. The alliance is comprised of Netanyahu’s Likud party, Religious Zionism/Jewish Power, Shas and United Torah Judaism. The election was marked by what was likely the highest turnout since 1999. Then they can work out how many votes it takes to win a single Knesset seat, and dole out seats to the parties based on the number of votes they got.

If parties rise above the electoral threshold or drop below the Knesset mandate distribution could change.

Had they passed, however, party leader Zehava Galon and Michal Rozin would have brought the number of women in the opposition up to 21. The number of double envelopes is far higher than in previous elections and therefore it is still unclear what the final results will be. She has stated in the past that one of her main goals was to reduce the disparity between Arab and Jewish women. She then returned to Knesset in 2021 as part of the Religious Zionist Party's list. Shtayyeh said that the Palestinian people will not stop their “legitimate struggle to end the occupation, gain their freedom, and establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, regardless of the identity of the winners of the Israeli elections. Election result marks dangerous new turn in Israel's rightward shift (The Guardian)

Israeli politics has been shifting rightwards for decades, but this new coalition could go further than any before.

“They might take steps against Palestinians in Jerusalem and the West Bank and the Negev, yes. They attack Palestinian children on the way to school, appropriate land, burn olive trees and steal sheep. The fig leaf will be gone,” said Prof As’ad Ghanem, a political sciences lecturer at the University of Haifa and co-author of Israel in the Post Oslo Era. He built a legal career defending Jewish extremists, and in the past called for the deportation of Palestinian citizens of Israel, who make up 20% of the population. “Maybe the far right getting in will be a good thing. Both Smotrich and Ben-Gvir expect to receive important cabinet positions, and have already lobbied for control of the justice, defence, finance, and public security ministries. On Wednesday morning, the enormity of what transpired was sinking in. Netanyahu also opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state, but otherwise does not share most of his new partners’ beliefs. The Religious Zionists’ list’s chair, Bezalel Smotrich, is the co-founder of an organisation which pursues legal action against Palestinian building in Israeli-controlled areas of the occupied West Bank. In the short term, the move has paid off: his extremist allies have doubled their number of seats to 13 or 14. Brandishing a pistol – as Ben-Gvir did recently in a Palestinian neighbourhood of occupied East Jerusalem – he danced his way across the set before taking a seat. Israeli politics has been shifting rightwards for several decades, but Ben-Gvir’s unprecedented success in this week’s election marks a new, dangerous turn.
