World Series: Phillies Hit 5 Homers in Game 3 Win Over Astros (The New York Times)

In the first World Series game in Philadelphia since 2009, the Phillies took Houston's Lance McCullers Jr. deep five times and cruised to victory.

Like Harper, his previous pitches in a game at home came in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series with the San Diego Padres. Of course, it is a lot easier to pitch when your teammates are mercilessly pounding the opponent’s pitcher. The umpires reviewed the play, and the home run was upheld, giving the fans another opportunity to cheer. The Phillies on Tuesday became the fourth team ever — like, ever — to hit five homers in a World Series game, and all of them came off Houston’s Lance McCullers Jr. Harper’s home run was his sixth of the postseason as he pounced on a curveball. The loudest boos and chants were reserved for Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman, the infielders who were as important to the 2017 team as they are to the current group. Astros Manager Dusty Baker had several opportunities to remove McCullers, but left him in to suffer more torment under the weight of the Phillies’ lumber. They joined the 2017 Astros, the 1989 Athletics and the 1928 Yankees, all of whom went on to win the World Series. Of the previous 61 times a Fall Classic was tied by 1-1, the team that won Game 3 went on to win the series 41 times, or 67 percent of the time. It was a breathtaking way to welcome the World Series back to Philadelphia after a 12-year absence, and it did more than just set a thunderous tone. An inning later Bohm hit a homer that happened to be the 1,000th in World Series history. It was a defining two-run blast that all but clinched the National League pennant for the surprising Phillies.

In front of electric crowd, Phils seize Series lead in emphatic fashion (MLB.com)

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philly faithful had waited 4746 days to host a World Series game, and then -- cruelly -- one more because of rain.

The home runs came in support of Suárez, who was only able to start this game on regular rest because of the rainout (the Game 3 assignment was initially scheduled to go to Noah Syndergaard) and did his part to ensure that lead stuck. [contact with the glove of a fan in the stands](https://www.mlb.com/news/young-phillies-fan-nearly-catches-brandon-marsh-homer) and then bounced atop the wall before falling into the glove of right fielder Kyle Tucker. With one out and on one in the fifth, Schwarber golfed a low changeup high and deep to dead center, pelting the batter’s eye greenery. And the Phillies got to save their highest-leverage relief arms for another day. Only in two of his five innings did the Astros mount a baserunner against him. “Just walking into the ballpark, just being back home, I think is such a momentum swing for us,” Harper said. PHILADELPHIA -- The Philly faithful had waited 4,746 days to host a World Series game, and then -- cruelly -- one more because of rain. Amid all that yelling, Harper called to Bohm, who was now on deck, to quietly dispense some advice before his next at-bat. “Hitting itself is a contagious thing without the crowd,” Hoskins said afterward in the Phillies’ clubhouse, where the fog from the club’s celebratory smoke machine still hung in the air. It was a poorly placed knuckle curve that At the end of the day, we got beat pretty bad, and I got beat up pretty bad.” “They hit a lot of solid pitches, I thought.

World Series Game 4: Phillies vs. Astros time, TV channel, live ... (CBS sports.com)

The Fightin' Phillies are a perfect 6-0 at Citizens Bank Park this postseason, have outscored their opponents 42-15 in the six games, and outhomered them 17-6.

I refuse to believe the Astros will go quietly though, so I'm going to say they eke out a win in Game 4 to knot the series up and turn this into a best-of-five. The Astros had the option to go with their best in Game 4 and declined. [Astros](https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/HOU/houston-astros/) opted not to bring Game 1 starter [Justin Verlander](/mlb/players/530362/justin-verlander/) back in Game 4, choosing instead to give the 39-year-old an extra day of rest this late in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. Nola allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings last time around, but the offense bailed him out and the Phillies got the win. Game 4 and 5 will be played in Philadelphia and two more wins put the Phillies on top of the baseball world. Philadelphia won the franchise's two titles in 1980 and 2009.

Phillies tie World Series mark with 5 home runs, top Astros (Tampa Bay Times)

Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm, Brandon Marsh, Kyle Schwarber and Rhys Hoskins homered to chase Astros starter and Tampa native Lance McCullers Jr.

Nola was done after 4 1/3 innings in Game 1 of the World Series, though he retired the final six batters he faced and left in a tie game after the Phillies rallied from an early 5-0 deficit — and won 6-5. He needed only two pitches to get the first two outs of the game and struck out Yordan Alvarez to end the first. Country music star Tim McGraw, son of the late Phillies reliever Tug McGraw, received a huge ovation and wore his dad’s No. “He usually keeps the ball in the ballpark. Marsh took the baton on the long-ball relay and knocked one into the right field seats that was dropped by a young kid from Delaware. With leadoff hitter Schwarber on first base, Harper repeated his flair for playoff power when he ripped a two-run shot off McCullers into the right field seats for the fast lead. Harper has hit four postseason homers that gave the Phillies the lead and showed that, yes, Bryce Bombs do go off in November, the first time more World Series games will be played in this month than October. “Just being back home, I think is such a momentum swing for us, just for the pure fact of our fan base,” Harper said. With a sparkling 6-0 record at Citizens Bank Park this postseason, the Phillies just may not return to Texas. Brandon Marsh also homered, and Kyle Schwarber and Rhys Hoskins hit back-to-back shots in the fifth inning to chase Astros starter and Tampa native Lance McCullers Jr. As for those whispers in May that the Phillies were finished? The secret has long been out: these Phillies are for real.
