Buffalo sends RB Zack Moss and a conditional 2023 6th round pick back to Indy.

He has been utilized out of the backfield a variety of ways and boasts both running and pass catching skills. In his first four full seasons, Hines has been one of the most targeted running backs, ranking in the top 20 among RBs in three out of the four seasons. The Buffalo Bills made a last-minute splash during Tuesday's NFL trade deadline, acquiring Indianapolis Colts running back Nyheim Hines.

AFC-best Bills trade Zack Moss, pick to Colts for RB Nyheim Hines (ESPN)

The Indianapolis Colts traded Nyheim Hines to the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday for running back Zack Moss and a conditional 2023 sixth-round draft pick.

The Bills have needed depth at safety since [Micah Hyde](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/15960/micah-hyde) suffered a season-ending neck injury in Week 2. McKissic](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/2572861/jd-mckissic) before he decided to re-sign with the Commanders. The team drafted running back [James Cook](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4379399/james-cook) in the second round, to fill a role as a receiving threat, and he has been developing over the course of the season. Singletary also has the second-most receptions on the team (23) and has averaged 8 yards per reception this season, but his role going forward should be more focused on the ground game with the addition of Hines. Safety [Jordan Poyer](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/15979/jordan-poyer) left the team's Week 8 victory over the [Green Bay Packers](/nfl/team/_/name/gb/green-bay-packers) with an elbow injury. Hines is averaging 2 yards per carry on 18 carries. His best receiving performance came in this past week's game against the [Green Bay Packers](/nfl/team/_/name/gb/green-bay-packers) with a 41-yard reception. So far in 2022, he's playing just 30% of offensive snaps -- a career low. Additionally, his carries dropped by 33 from 89 in 2020 to 56 last season. He has averaged 11.8 yards per return in his career. This season the fourth-round pick out of NC State has 25 receptions for 188 yards on a struggling Colts offense that saw quarterback [Matt Ryan](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/11237/matt-ryan) benched for [Sam Ehlinger](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4241820/sam-ehlinger).

Unable to increase his role, Colts trade Nyheim Hines to Bills for ... (The Indianapolis Star)

Hines has 25 catches for 188 yards this season, and he's averaging 10.1 yards per punt return.

In Sunday’s loss to Washington, Hines played his most varied role of the season — five carries for 20 yards and a touchdown, two catches for 29 yards — but it was a role he’s played his entire time in Indianapolis. Indianapolis is much more likely to fill Hines’s role by increasing the opportunities for second-year back Deon Jackson, who has rushed 30 times for 100 yards and caught 14 passes for 108 yards this season, including a 10-catch performance in the win over the Jaguars three weeks ago. The Colts had promised to get Hines more involved this offseason, one year after his touches dropped into a tie for his smallest workload in Indianapolis with Carson Wentz at the helm. “Would we like to have Nyheim be up there as far as, at the end of the season, when you tally up who has the catches, do we want Nyheim to kind of be one of those top three guys? The trade comes a little more than a year after signing Hines to a three-year extension worth $18.6 million. Hines had been given 35.2 percent of the snaps in his six healthy games this season, catching 25 passes for 188 yards, carrying the ball 18 times for 36 yards and averaging 10.1 yards per return as the team’s primary punt return.

Why the Colts dealt RB Nyheim Hines to the Bills (The Athletic)

The dynamic running back was frustrated by his lack of usage the past two seasons and the Colts' struggles so far in 2022.

A year after finishing 10th in the league in yards before contact (1.69 per rush), the Colts are third-worst in that category this season (1.07 per rush). “I think I’ve done everything the Colts and the offensive staff has asked of me,” he said before the 2021 season when asked about his inconsistent involvement on offense. From 2018 to 2020, Hines caught more passes (170) in his first three seasons than any running back in team history, topping the previous mark set by Marshall Faulk. And each year we’re restarting and have to turn the page.” “It’s just frustrating,” he said after the game, speaking of the offense as a whole. The Colts’ offense remains one of the worst in the league — 30th in scoring, 27th in rushing, 26th in red zone efficiency — and losing Hines will only make things more difficult the rest of the way, especially with a young quarterback in Ehlinger. The holes that were there a year ago simply aren’t there now. But it was more of the same through eight games: Hines has 43 touches, around seven per game, for 229 yards. Trade negotiations began Monday, a day after Hines scored the Colts’ lone touchdown in a one-point loss to the Commanders, and the team wrapped up the deal shortly before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. The constant shuffling at quarterback certainly hasn’t helped. I think it’s worth it to consider drafting him.” After five years on the QB carousel — from Andrew Luck to

As an RB deriving most of his value via the passing game, we’d have preferred he remain in Indy, where the Colts have averaged 30 more completions to RBs than Buffalo the past two seasons, and outpace the Bills in that department by a 61-35 advantage this season. Hines is making $2 million this season and is owed $10.3 million combined in 2023 and 2024. This season was on track to be another underwhelming campaign with just 42 touches for 224 yards and one touchdown in seven games. Hines showed his potential when he was involved in the offense, but how much he’d be used varied year-to-year and was only exacerbated by the team’s revolving door of starting quarterbacks. The Indianapolis Colts traded Nyheim Hines to the Buffalo Bills and it'll be tough for fans to watch Hines' career blossom away from Indy.

Every time Hines makes a big play for Buffalo, behind the smiles of Colts fans will be a reminder that Indianapolis didn’t utilize his skill set properly and that’s why he’s now balling for another team. It’s a safe bet to assume Hines will become a big playmaker with the Bills. That is why Hines’ future is going to be bittersweet for Indy’s fans. For four and a half seasons with the Colts, he has repeatedly shown the type of explosive weapon he is but he remained underused by Indy, even after [Frank Reich promised](https://horseshoeheroes.com/2022/05/26/frank-reich-colts-player-draft-fantasy-nyheim-hines/) to the world that he would be more involved this season. He definitely found that better opportunity with the Buffalo Bills. He didn’t make a big fuss about it but he did go to the team to request a possible move.

12 things to know about new Bills RB Nyheim Hines (Bills Wire)

The Buffalo Bills acquired running back Nyheim Hines in a deal with the Indianapolis Colts at the 2022 NFL trade deadline.

Hines shared a video to his social media account on Instagram back in college. Hines took a hit against the Denver Broncos on Oct. Which is a bit funny since he does not overshare things on social media. Hines played for the Wolf Pack at the University of North Carolina. He recorded a 4.38 second time, amongst the top in his draft class. Hines, 25, was a fourth-round pick of the Colts in 2018. He didn’t look good getting back up, but Hines is now thankfully OK. doing laundry when the Colts picked him. I’m a competitor, I wanted to get drafted, I didn’t want to be the ninth running back taken,” Hines said. In his five-year career, Hines has 235 receptions for 1,7325 yards. Insider: Colts chalk up unrealized Nyheim Hines role that led to ... (The Indianapolis Star)

INDIANAPOLIS — Nyheim Hines is no longer a Colt. Hines wanted a chance to contribute beyond the “satellite back” role he'd played in his four-plus seasons ...

“I was hoping to get him close to 10 touches a game,” Reich said. We haven’t had a lot of yards, we haven’t had a lot of points, so everybody’s production is down, to a large extent.” … You’re always going to miss a guy like that.” “It came at the last second, so it definitely caught me off-guard,” Franklin said. Take away Hines’s two touches against Denver before the injury, and the fifth-year running back had 17 carries and 24 catches in six full games this season, a tick under seven touches per game. Backup running backs Deon Jackson and Phillip Lindsay caught 13 passes in that game alone; if Hines had been healthy, a significant portion of those catches would have gone to him instead. In his best two seasons in Indianapolis — 2018 and 2020 — Hines averaged 9.3 and 9.5 touches per game, respectively. Reich, the team’s offensive coordinator and play-caller, was asked directly if he should have done more to get Hines involved in the offense. “Such a good player, such a good teammate. “It’s unfortunate, that’s just how this league is. “I always had a vision of Nyheim taking off in this offense,” Reich said. He’s got a fresh start in a good situation.”

Bills Shake Up Backfield, Acquire RB Nyheim Hines From Colts (Buffalo Fanatics)

The Buffalo Bills made two moves right before Tuesday's NFL Trade Deadline. They acquired RB Nyheim Hines from the Indianapolis Colts…

Buffalo now heads to New York (New Jersey) this Sunday with a 6-1 overall record, their best start since 1993. [Buffalo Bills4 weeks ago](https://thebuffalofanatics.com/week-5-injury-report-bills-vs-steelers/) We came up with a stereotypical game plan for the Bills where they throw the ball 40 times and run it 30. [Devin Singletary will not be re-signed this offseason](https://thebuffalofanatics.com/buffalo-bulletin-say-goodbye-to-devin-singletary/); that Hines and James Cook will share backfield duties in 2023. Cook had a solid showing on Sunday Night Football, rushing five times for 35 yards (7.0 yards/carry) and adding one catch for 41 yards. He was not. But, considering what the Bills gave up for Hines (compared to what they would’ve had to give up for Gibson or even Kareem Hunt) and Hines’ positional versatility, this appears to be the smart, cost effective move that suits the Bills. Bills GM Brandon Beane always says he prefers to win now and in the future. Assuming he plays out his contract in Buffalo, he will have cap hits of just over $2 million this year, $4.8 million next year, and $5.5 million in 2024. While Nyheim Hines may not have eye-popping stats, he brings a lot of upside to this already high-powered offense as well as special teams versatility. Playing behind Jonathan Taylor, Deon Jackson, and Phillip Lindsay, Hines has just 18 carries for 36 yards and 25 receptions for 188 yards in 2022. The former 2018 fourth round pick was buried on the Colts’ depth chart this season after signing a three-year, $18.6 million extension last September.
