The Athletic's Jack Pitt-Brooke has taken a look at Conte's tenure thus far, and what comes next. Antonio Conte just celebrated a year in charge of Tottenham. •1h ago It's not the first time a Liverpool player has left one on a Napoli opponent in this match. •25m ago •24m ago •22m ago Meret rushes out to meet him and just gets his fingertips on Salah's shot to deflect it around the far post. •17m ago And the roar at the Stade Velodrome is remarkable. The former Newcastle defender leaps incredibly high at the back post at a corner and manages to nod the ball past Hugo Lloris. In Group D, it's total chaos as all four clubs can still finish in first place.
Can Liverpool beat Napoli by at least four goals to win Champions League Group A?
Wherever you are in the world, thanks for joining me (Roddy) for live coverage of Tuesday’s Champions League Group A clash between Liverpool and Napoli. The Champions League has been a welcome distraction for Liverpool from their frankly awful domestic form (more on that in a bit). Napoli are in pole position and, having tanked Liverpool 4-1 at the Maradona (still feels weird saying that), only need to avoid a hammering to top the group. Both teams are already through to the knockout stages but they’re gunning for top spot in the group. To be more precise, now that teams finishing on level points are separated by whoever has the better head-to-head record, Liverpool need to win by a four-goal margin or more to leapfrog tonight’s opponents. Luciano Spalletti’s men boast a perfect record in the group stages and have dished out a number of thrashings along the way. Napoli have been the revelation of the 2022-23 Champions League. Kvaratskhelia goes down the left and gets a nudge from Konaté. They were one of the favourites to challenge for the title but find themselves in ninth, 16 points behind leaders Arsenal, 15 behind Manchester City and only five above the relegation zone. Osimhen is a bit late to track him and fouls the Frenchman... Kvaratskhelia looks like he's going to be the main dangerman for the visitors. That was some delightful footwork there to work the ball through to Milner in the box.
Live coverage of Liverpool's Champions League game against Napoli with lineup news, streaming and television options, and live updates.
Please don’t hurt us (or yourselves) tonight, Liverpool. Over a team that absolutely trounced us 4-1 in their gaff. Unless Liverpool do a madness and win by 4 goals.

"I think we kept the game very even, we created chances for ourselves, we suffered in moments. [Liverpool](/soccer/team?id=364) bounced back from defeat against [Leeds United](/soccer/team?id=357) with a hard-fought 2-0 victory against [Napoli](/soccer/team?id=114), but it did not stop the Serie A side from finishing top of their Champions League group. "It was the worst possible start to this group with the performance against Napoli. [Leo Ostigard](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/281736/Leo-Ostigard) headed home an inswinging free-kick from [Khvicha Kvaratskhelia](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/274745/Khvicha-Kvaratskhelia), but the goal was ruled offside after a VAR review. [Virgil van Dijk](https://www.espn.com/football/player/_/id/157892/virgil-van-dijk), with the goal ruled onside after a lengthy review. [Thiago](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/301894/Thiago) which Napoli goalkeeper [Alex Meret](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/209746/Alex-Meret) turned away.
Late goals from Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez helped Liverpool to a 2-0 win over Napoli but the Italians still finished top dogs in Champions League Group A.
As Klopp referenced, Liverpool were more of a cohesive unit, especially in midfield where Thiago and especially James Milner, before he departed with a head injury on 47 minutes, made it very difficult for Napoli to get their creative forces into dangerous positions. In a word, it's all about Liverpool being "compact". Is it due to a lack of investment? That's why I mentioned the second goal against Leeds as an example of a situation where you defend with all you have but we were chasing the game. Trying to articulate and intelligently dissect where it has all gone wrong for Liverpool this season has made many heads explode in recent weeks. His first goal in the Champions League for Liverpool - the first of many, Klopp will be hoping. The noise was lifted for a short period but with no real desperate urge to win the tie and Tottenham looming on Sunday, a winner for either team looked unlikely. They sensed their moment of making it 14 in a row and looked to have taken their chance from a set piece when Ostigard was left free to head home from six yards. Really good pieces of football and the defensive stuff was a high level. "If you have seen what Napoli can do it was a really good game for us. He said: "I would have enjoyed the game even without the goals but they are important stuff. Being compact makes all the difference.
Liverpool ended Napoli's unbeaten streak in the UEFA Champions League with a selfless performance from Mohamed Salah.
[Trent Alexander-Arnold](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/223532/Trent-Alexander-Arnold), 4 -- Sloppy. Almost made things comfortable with a low cross that was nicked away from Salah at the last second. Slipped in Tsimikas with an intelligent ball out to the left but his cross was defended well before finding Jones with an outrageous flick that was headed over by the latter. MF Harvey Elliot, 6 -- Replaced injured skipper Milner in the 48th minute. Napoli responded and thought they'd taken the lead, but VAR chalked off [Leo Ostigard](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/281736/Leo-Ostigard)'s second-half bullet header after a very long wait to deny the defender his second goal in as many Champions League appearances. He's almost 37 now and still playing Champions League football, and in the engine room too -- you have to respect that, especially in contests as frantic as this one was. Headed another effort comfortably over after dazzling work from Firmino, and maybe he should have hit the target. Jurgen Klopp, 6 -- The charismatic Liverpool manager celebrated 400 games with three points against an extremely well-drilled outfit. Gratefully grasped onto a first-time strike from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia that took a nasty deflection off Trent Alexander-Arnold. Good sides can win ugly, and that's exactly what Jurgen Klopp's men did against the Serie A leaders. Tuesday marked more Champions League minutes for Jones, who looks like the real deal at times. The result also ended a 13-game winning streak for Napoli.
Liverpool ended Napoli's 100 per cent record in the Champions League, snatching a 2-0 win at Anfield with two late goals. A game of few clear-cut chances ...
But after having been repeatedly ripped to shreds in the return fixture, a more pedestrian affair is exactly what Liverpool needed. After a turbulent start, it is becoming clearer by the day that he will be a hit at Liverpool. Even after the goal, he had time to flash across a very dangerous ball, with Salah only denied a tap-in by a great piece of defending. It was a great moment, and one where the Liverpool supporters lived up to their reputation. Núñez was very unlucky to miss out on the winning goal from the bench. Keeping it simple is the order of the day for Liverpool as they look to get back on track. But there can be no doubt that these ridiculous waits make a mockery of the technology. But unlike his colleague, he took no risks from there, shepherding the ball harmlessly out for a throw-in. There were less than three minutes on the clock when Liverpool got their first hint of a flashback to Leeds. But despite what the scoreline may suggest, it was a fiercely-contested affair. Like Gomez, he had the pace to eat up the required ground, no mean feat against the electric Victor Osimhen. A game of few clear-cut chances was ultimately settled by Mohamed Salah, turning home after a Darwin Núñez effort had come within millimetres of crossing the line.
