That’s where the Lions are at the trade deadline. Guard Logan Stenberg and injured WR Quintez Cephus are like that on the offensive side of the ball. That can either be a reason to keep him in Detroit or coax a more appealing offer from a team that might want to deal for him. If the Lions are not interested in locking up Hockenson, 25, on a long-term deal at some point before his $9.4 million fifth-year option ends after the 2023 season, they might never get more in return than they would right now. These are players who are under contract through at least 2023 at affordable rates and offer upgrade potential over the players the Lions currently have in their spots. He could be Halapoulivaati Vaitai’s replacement at a much cheaper rate and with more proven pedigree than what might come available in the offseason. The Lions are well-aware of that fact. He’s a proven commodity at a position where the Lions can use help. However, he’s under contract for just the final nine games of this season, then he’s a free agent. Signed this offseason as a free agent from the Colts, Reed was projected to start for Minnesota at right guard before getting injured in training camp. It can be a great way to pick up a useful player for a bargain price. GM Brad Holmes will work the phones to see what might be out there, and he could find some interesting offers as either a buyer or a seller.

He’s not a financial burden ($2.3M cap hit this year, $2.7M next year), so unless they get a bigger-than-expected offer, the Lions likely ride out the rest of his contract. Financial impact: By trading Swift, the Lions would absorb a $555,000 cap hit while freeing up $816,000 in cap space in 2022. McCaffrey hauled in a second, third, fourth, and future pick for the Panthers, and while Swift is a couple years younger than McCaffrey, he also has a fraction of his resume. Swift has proven he can be a big-play weapon, but the lack of availability over his career limits his value. While his recent benching suggests the Lions may be willing to move on from Oruwariye, it’s hard to imagine he has much of a market out there. He’s also in the final year of his deal, meaning whoever would trade for him would only get a three-month rental on him. This is something, however, the Lions may more strongly consider next year when it is much more financially viable and the team may be looking for cap space to extend Jonah Jackson and Penei Sewell. Decker is a good player at a high-value position who could be entering the twilight of his career soon. His 3.7 receptions per game are the lowest since his rookie season, and even though his yards per game is currently at a career-high, that is being skewed by one 81-yard reception. There hasn’t been much chatter about the Lions being involved in any trade talks thus far this year, and if we’re being completely honest, it doesn’t look like they have a ton of players worth dealing.
