Now, with Mariota pushing the Falcons (4-4) to the top of the NFC South this late into a season for the first time since 2016, when they went to the Super Bowl . Enter Mariota, who was sought by Smith to manage the Falcons’ offense in the meantime, and if you’re into the modern NFL, that meant Smith wanted old-school ugly as in run, run and run some more. Smith triggered a slew of changes with the Falcons. He signed with the Falcons before this season to become a starter in the NFL for the first time in three years. 2 pick (overall by the Titans in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft). He completed 20 of his 28 throws for 253 yards and three touchdowns. You sort of go through a million staff changes at Tennessee, and then going through a contract year (of 2019) gets benched. He also showed his feet remained swift with 43 yards on six carries. When they traded future Pro Football Hall of Famer Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts before this season for a third-round draft pick, Smith needed somebody to help his team in its transition from now through wherever. This was Mariota’s victory, though, and Smith kept rattling off reasons his quarterback has become so special these days: “You win the Heisman (trophy). He was a Raiders backup during the previous two seasons, and before that, he spent five years as a starter for the Tennessee Titans, but that was only technically. “I’ve got to be better.
The Atlanta Falcons are in sole possession of first place in the NFC South with a powerful record of ... 4-4. For years the NFC South has been football's ...
Ask the Saints, who became the first team in the history of the division to win four times in a row, only to be bounced in the playoffs each time. I’m a strong proponent in the idea that every NFL fan should have a second favorite team in the NFC South — because it’s going to make you eternally optimistic about your own team by comparison. It’s been 20 years since the NFC South was formed, and in that time the division has seen some of the most staggering highs, and hilarious lows in the NFL. You have to be a real sicko to watch the NFC South week in, week out. For years the NFC South has been football’s funniest, least-predictable division — but 2022 has taken that to new heights of absurdity which has left all four teams in some form of building, rebuilding, soul searching, or a combination of all three. The Atlanta Falcons are in sole possession of first place in the NFC South with a powerful record of ...

It goes without saying that this division is far from settled, but the Falcons ultimately did what they needed to this weekend and got out of their matchup against the Panthers with a win. It remains to be seen what the Falcons do with that opportunity, but it’s safe to say they have the chance to run the NFC South for at least a couple of seasons, if not significantly longer than that. The remaining three teams in the division have zero combined long-term answers at quarterback, are all in the red in terms of 2023 cap space, and are certainly not in significantly better positions than the Falcons roster-wise, if at all. - The Panthers are likely in a similar no quarterback, very little cap space situation, but they also don’t have a set coaching staff. Tampa Bay pushed their chips in to win a championship or two with Brady and got one, but given that It probably seems like an odd time to write all this given that they’re coming off a heart attack effort against what should’ve been an inferior Carolina team, but at 4-4 and with all that cash and promise ahead, they’re in a fine position.

That said, there’s a reality to starting a rookie quarterback, and overall well-being of the team. But I do think the decision to go to Sam Ehlinger shows a willingness, and maybe a push on ownership’s part, to figure out the quarterback situation, once and for all, whether Ehlinger or someone they draft in April. And whatever it took, we knew we were going to win that game no matter what, and the way it ended, in our hands, no matter how it was, no matter how we were feeling as an offensive line, it was just our offensive line jelling right there at the end. The Giants, conversely, are at the beginning stages of a rebuild, and their loss in Seattle on Sunday was a reminder of it—and why I don’t see Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll getting drunk on their hot start and doing anything shortsighted. To get a win I think is good for him, good for the team, and he’s just got to keep grinding and keep fighting. We had a mindset, we knew it, we wanted to control the rock on the road and our defense stopped the run. I think there was a sense of urgency and that feeling throughout the whole building.” Wilson, true to form, did, and even hit a big one to Garrett Wilson early in the game. “What’s cool is our guys continued to believe, and we understood that if we had a chance for the ball, we could win.” “So he gave me a full read, and I thought that I had a chance to get outside, but he did a good job of kind of continuing down. “It was a zone read and actually I thought [Brian] Burns played it well; he kind of went down to the back and came back at me,” Mariota said. If we continue to have that mentality, I think we’ll like where we are at the end of the year.”

And in this contest between I-85 foes, their first in a 10-day window, the Falcons managed to get the best of Carolina, narrowly edging them out in overtime, 37-34. Because of this, and coupled with the Bucs’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night, suddenly the Falcons and Panthers were playing for something nobody, not even the most diehard of fans on either side, even considered entering the season: Yes, the division’s weak this year.
Am I left speechless by what we witnessed in the Falcons 37-34 overtime win over the Carolina Panthers? Or am I left with too much to say? That's the ...
London had a seven-yard pick up on third down that set up a Tyler Allgeier touchdown at the end of the third quarter. If we do expand the criteria to include second and long and third and long explosives, that 104-yard total increases to 164 total yards. There was a first down run by Allgeier at the beginning of the first quarter where London got a solid block off. The Falcons needed to be better on third and medium. On the Falcons Final Whistle podcast after the game, I said I felt like the defense should have been better on third and long. I've written a significant amount of words breaking down the area in which I believe the offense needs to most improve. In the end, Mariota and the Falcons offense made up for the slow start by putting together a final drive that set up Younghoe Koo's game-winning field goal. If you take away the scoring drive of which I am referring to above, the Falcons only had about 50 net yards of total offense in the first half. Sure it was a game that the Falcons fought back to almost win, but if they start faster? I'll go even further to say this was the only possession the Falcons had in the entire half that felt productive. It came up after the loss to the Rams in Week 2. The good news for you, Dear Reader, is that I have decided I have too much to say, indeed.

When the Falcons sat at 2-2, their odds were even lower at a [30% chance of making the playoffs](https://www.sportstalkatl.com/falcons-nfl-playoff-odds/). The Eagles look like the only serious Super Bowl contender, and the Falcons are right in the middle of the playoff picture. Atlanta might not have the formula to win in a variety of ways, but Arthur Smith has this team believing in themselves and has proven to be a tough draw. The Falcons might be the surprise of the NFL season. Most of the time, in a contest like we saw against the Panthers on Sunday, the Falcons would fold.

The Atlanta Falcons have signed nose tackle Khyiris Tonga to their practice squad. Additionally, the Falcons signed cornerback Dylan Mabin to the practice squad. The Atlanta Falcons have officially signed tight end Anthony Firkser to the active roster. With the new commitment, Atlanta will also sport the alternate helmet against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 13. The Falcons' contest against San Francisco will be the first time the helmet design has hit the field since 2012. The 6-1, 195-pound Mabin has played in four career NFL games, all in 2020. After the final whistle blew, the Falcons walked away victorious - and will take more than just the end result with them for weeks to come. He figures to fill the role of Caleb Huntley on Atlanta's practice squad if Williams is knocked out of action. In a corresponding move, the Falcons placed defensive tackle Derrick Tangelo on the practice squad injured reserve. Now, Tabor gets an opportunity to play with the Seahawks. But as the Panthers watch Atlanta rise in the NFC South … 5 after being waived by the Chicago Bears in the final round of preseason cuts.
Terry Fontenot has made it a priority to clear the payroll for the Atlanta Falcons, could he be doing that to make a play for an MVP QB Lamar Jackson?
Jackson hitting free agency would be the equivalent of Vick hitting free agency in his prime. He is simply a one-of-a-kind player who fits into what the Falcons want to do on offense perfectly. So, there are basically two factors in all of this, do the Falcons see Desmond Ridder as a franchise quarterback? The Falcons have rookie Desmond Ridder sitting on the bench and he is the key to answering this whole question. If those negotiations stalled in July or August then they are likely to stall when the talks pick back up. The question still remains, what will he decide to do with all that money?

[Anthony Rush](https://thefalconswire.usatoday.com/2022/10/07/falcons-anthony-rush-nfl-news-timmy-horne/) a few weeks ago. A veteran like Hilton could add some leadership and depth to Atlanta’s young group of pass-catchers as the team tries to stay atop the NFC South. [Will Compton](https://thefalconswire.usatoday.com/2022/10/04/falcons-will-compton-nfl-news/) is someone the team could call if injuries pile up over the second half of the season. He previously [worked out](https://thefalconswire.usatoday.com/2022/10/04/falcons-will-compton-nfl-news/) for the Falcons in early October and according to ESPN’s Field Yates, the team said it planned to keep Compton in mind for a late-season playoff push. And it’s not like signing Paradis to a one-year deal would prevent the team from developing Drew Dalman. With nine games remaining and [$9.45 million](https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/atlanta-falcons) in salary cap space available, the Falcons could look to sign a free agent or two to bolster their roster for a possible playoff run.
