Vikings-Cardinals: 5 things you can count on (Sports Illustrated)

Will the Vikings answer the call of duty when they take on Kyler Murray and the Cardinals?

The Cardinals look like a hot mess coming into this game and a lot of it has to do with their quarterback. Fortunately, Joseph rebounded to knock down 33-of-38 field goals and turn in the ninth-highest field goal percentage (86.8%) in franchise history. According to Pro Football Focus, Sullivan is allowing 1.87 yards per coverage snap (10th among qualifying cornerbacks) and a 130.2 passer rating in the slot this season. However, Vikings fans would be dismissing history if they expect an easy win. By comparison, Hopkins only ran 11 percent of his routes from the slot in 2021. The Vikings came into the year expecting big things from their offense, but it hasn't played out over the first six games. Their record looks the part but it's O'Connell's offense that is supposed to tie it together. O'Connell has already begun that process as the Vikings used more two tight-end sets and increased C.J. Arizona has already ruled out four starters for Sunday's game including running back James Connor, center Rodney Hudson, edge rusher Dennis Gardeck and offensive guard Max Garcia. [Rushing is back in vogue and the Vikings have some catching up to do](https://www.si.com/fannation/bringmethesports/vikings/rushing-is-back-in-vogue-and-the-vikings-have-some-catching-up-to-do) Look for some new wrinkles after a week of self-scouting. The Minnesota Vikings emerge out of their bye week as legitimate contenders but they'll need to keep winning if they want to keep their place at the top of the NFC.

Cousins also completed one pass to Justin Jefferson for 28 yards on the drive. The 15-yard penalty was assessed on the Cardinals first offensive play. Kyler Murray threw to a covered up Hopkins in the middle of the end zone. He adds another 21 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Murray fell on the ball to prevent a turnover, but the loss was enough to keep the Cardinals from attempting a fourth-down conversion.] [Score: Vikings 28, Cardinals 26 (12:32 fourth)] [Walking into the end zone] [Rondale Moore walked in for a touchdown at the end of a 38-yard play to make it a one-score game. [What a grab] [DeAndre Hopkins made a one-handed grab in the end zone to give the Cardinals a touchdown late in the first half. On third-and-8 from the Minnesota 11, the Cardinals took a 5-yard loss when the ball was snapped a Kyler Murray, who was obviously not ready to receive it as he was turned toward the sideline. [Cardinals take it away] [Isaiah Simmons sacked Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins and forced a fumble, then recovered it to put the Cardinals back in position to take the lead. However, the Vikings missed the extra point to keep it a one-possession game. Kyler Murray completed passes to Rondale Moore (11 yards) and DeAndre Hopkins (17 yards) before a throw intended to tight end Zach Ertz was intercepted by Camryn Bynum at the Minnesota 36. With the ball their own 35, Murray found tight end Zach Ertz in the middle near midfield for a first down.

4 takeaways at halftime from Week 8 Cardinals vs. Vikings (Vikings Wire)

The first half has come to a close in Minneapolis as the Vikings hold onto a 14-10 lead as the half ended on a blocked 56-yard field goal from Greg Joseph.

The easiest way to do that is to run the football effectively and the Vikings have done just that. The Minnesota Vikings had the first possession of the game and Cousins took advantage of it. The Vikings got a touchdown on their third drive but left potential points on the board with simple missed throws from Cousins.

In the end, the Cardinals couldn't find a way to score another touchdown and set up a potential game-tying two-point try. Their lead in the NFC North could grow even wider if the Packers lose to the Bills on Sunday Night Football. They took a 17-14 lead in the third quarter on Murray's second of three touchdown passes. Cousins got things started with a 17-yard scamper for a touchdown on the Vikings' opening possession. Osborn for a touchdown to extend the Vikings' lead, but Joseph's missed extra point kept Arizona alive. Then, in a game where two teams exchanged blows for four quarters, the Cardinals got in the next punch. With the final seconds ticking off the clock, Harrison Phillips then sacked Murray to end it, setting off a purple celebration inside U.S. The Vikings' special teams also chipped in with a big play, as Troy Dye recovered a muffed punt in the fourth quarter. A Greg Joseph missed extra point following Cousins' second touchdown pass kept the deficit at one score, giving the Cardinals a chance. They scored at least one touchdown in all four quarters, exceeding 30 points for the first time in the Kevin O'Connell era. Reactions: Cardinals see operation issues resurface in loss to Vikings (Arizona Sports)

Our Arizona Sports hosts and editors react as pre-snap problems continued to haunt the Cardinals' offense in a loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

The Cardinals continue to struggle in the first quarter — they still haven’t scored a touchdown in the first quarter all year. Head coach Kingsbury offered to sideline reporter Paul Calvisi afterward that Murray wearing a new play-call sheet on his left arm has something to do with curbing issues getting in and out of the huddles, but the results make it appear that effort isn’t working. Early struggles on both sides of the ball led to an early deficit. There is a randomness to the whole operation that makes the wins this year feel like happy accidents and not part of a plan. But this game went off script with the three turnovers and the crucial points the Vikings scored off those miscues. On a third-and-4 from the Minnesota 44-yard line, Murray opted to go to a diving Greg Dortch (short of the sticks) and he couldn’t make the play. Even on Murray’s last completion of the game — a 24-yarder from Murray to Hopkins on a broken play on their final possession — there were three receivers in basically the spot on the field. A poor pick by Kyler Murray on a deep ball underthrown to Robbie Anderson gave the Vikings the ball at the Cardinals’ 30-yard line and led to a touchdown. On fourth down, Murray dumped it off over the middle (short of the sticks) to Eno Benjamin, who was stopped short of the first down by Jordan Hicks. They managed to take the lead at 17-14 but the number of mistakes in the second half is just mind-boggling. And to be fair, 3-5 doesn’t mean you’re done in the NFC West. With nine games left, Arizona will likely have to go 6-3 to have a chance to make the playoffs, and that would take a Kingsbury team doing something they just don’t do: finishing strong.

5 things that stood out in the Vikings' win over Arizona (Sports Illustrated)

If the Packers lose to the Bills Sunday night, they'll be four losses behind the Vikings in the NFC North.

The Packers (3-4) could be four games back in the loss column if they lose to the Bills in Buffalo on Sunday night. With 2:45 to go and Arizona down to one timeout, Adam Thielen was called for holding on first down. Minnesota could've put the final nail in the coffin, but instead they went three-and-out when two Dalvin Cook runs went for only four yards and then Cousins got sacked when J.J. Up 34-26, Cam Bynum intercepted Murray with 6:55 to go in the game. As far as Sunday's game went, Joseph had a terrible attempt on a 56-yard field goal as the first half came to end, so bad that the kick hit a defensive lineman in the head for a zero effort block. What was worse was Joseph banging an extra point off the upright in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings Took A Step On Their Evolutionary Chart Against Arizona (Zone Coverage)

The Minnesota Vikings mostly eschew the hackneyed motivational statements other teams have in their locker rooms, both at US Bank Stadium and in their.

[Johnny Mundt](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MundJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) scored his first-career touchdown. [Kirk Cousins](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/C/CousKi00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) scored the first touchdown on a scramble. They had to prove they could score 30 points and that the defense could bend but not break against a good offense. The defense, especially [Za’Darius Smith](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/SmitZa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-), came up big in crucial moments. There’s also a sign telling players that they can’t have smartwatches on the field – it’s against league policy. Eventually, the primate becomes a man.

New Vikings make big plays in 34-26 win over Cardinals; lead ... (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

The coach had another game ball, he said, for Za'Darius Smith, whose three sacks of Kyler Murray gave him 8½ in his first seven games with the Vikings after the ...

After a Cardinals penalty meant Murray would start his next drive from the Arizona 9, he threw deep while trying to avoid getting sacked in the end zone for a safety. Green held the Cardinals to a field goal on their first drive, and the Vikings built a 14-3 lead at the end of a nine-play, 83-yard drive where Cousins found a wide-open Johnny Mundt — the tight end who'd signed a modest two-year deal this offseason — for his first career touchdown. "One of the traits that makes Justin special, when the ball goes up in the air, he plays in such a way where he says, 'That's my football.'" The Vikings got the ball first, and for the third time in four games, they turned their opening drive into a touchdown. The 17-yard touchdown run was the second longest of Cousins' career, and it staked the Vikings to an early lead. On fourth down, with the Vikings up eight and 2:39 remaining, Hicks stopped Eno Benjamin 1 yard short of a first down on a reception over the middle, forcing a turnover on downs.

Monday Morning Mailbag: Fans' Reactions After Vikings Win Over ... (Vikings.com)

Do you have a comment or question? Send it to the Vikings.com Mailbag! Every Monday we'll post several comments and/or questions as part of the Vikings.com ...

It is games like these that show the grit and backbone of the Vikings and fans, and I suspect it won't be the last. In any event, as to the outcome of the games, they should be exciting again to watch and reminisce. As for when I go back and look at pics at the Old Met, I'm always amazed by the mettle of Vikings fans. Any time a team considers altering what it's built through trade, it would probably be best-served to make sure the chemistry that has served a team well will not be altered in an adverse way. I would say interior lineman, but I don't know if that would hurt the cohesiveness of the unit. With that in mind and the trade deadline coming up, I think that maybe we should go after either somebody in the defensive backfield to help shore that up or a coverage LB on defense. That could be a sign of respect by the Cardinals. PATs are important, and Joseph would likely be the first to say it. It is difficult for me to say that any particular player is not doing his job because I know they all put a tremendous amount of time and effort into being the best they can be. That particular scenario was at the end of the half, so there was no immediate consequence like advantageous field position immediately awarded to the Cardinals. The last punt of the game made me think of the "coffin corner." The Vikings then looked to veterans in 2021 by adding Peterson and Bashaud Breeland.

I still don't believe these Vikings (Deadspin)

No matter how much the Vikings improve in one-score games, they still have a significant problem. While good fortune is raining down on Cousins and new Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, they still can’t put teams down before they have a chance to come back. Maybe the Vikings’ luck is due in 2022. One-score games have been the death of the Vikings in recent years. Kyler Murray runs from side-to-side and in circles trying to find a lane to launch the ball through and hopefully find an open receiver. Plays like that are why it is so hard to trust the Vikings through seven games.

The Vikings are oozing with confidence after another thrilling win (Sports Illustrated)

Following victory over the Cardinals, Vikings stars credited Kevin O'Connell with their performance in key moments.

“[O’Connell] brought that with him Day 1 when he walked in the building both in how we want to play and what team we want to be outside of this stadium.” They overcame those issues by taking advantage of what the Cardinals gave them in the form of 10 penalties, two interceptions and a fumbled punt. The hire of Kevin O’Connell signified a massive sea change in the way the players were managed. “I think a lot of guys are relying on a lot of experience,” receiver Adam Thielen said. They needed every bit of their all-for-one attitude to pull off a win over the Cardinals, who took the lead in the third quarter and threatened to go ahead again in the fourth quarter after a strip sack. What if a little more confidence and a little more belief in each other could get them over the hump?

It's starting to look like the Vikings are the second-best team in the NFC behind only the Eagles. Breech gave the Vikings a "B+" for their game. Out of their five wins, only the victory over Dolphins came against a team with a winning record, and Miami was without its starting quarterback. Against Arizona, Minnesota had three offensive drives that ended in sacks, and the Vikings committed 10 penalties. The hire of O'Connell signified a massive sea change in the way the players were managed.
