Video game-inspired sprint along wall pays off for Ross Chastain (The Washington Post)

The risky gambit earned Chastain a berth in the Cup Series playoffs' “Championship 4,” but not all drivers approved.

“We just didn’t control the race when we had control of it. Of the risky tactic Chastain used to overtake him, Hamlin said: “Great move. Just prerace, I was looking up and seeing all the fans, this place is packed. I don’t even know what to say.” Kyle Larson, who finished second at Martinsville after he was knocked out of the playoffs earlier this month, was also critical of Chastain’s gambit. Something we all thought about at one point — at least, I thought about it a lot but never really had the need to do it — but I’ve also kind of thought of how many races I could have won here by doing that. Bell’s do-or-die win was his second in the playoffs. Chastain stole the show, though, with a move that even Denny Hamlin — who was knocked out of the final quartet by his rival’s wall-riding heroics — had to acknowledge was “brilliant.” Now every Xfinity race, every truck race, every Cup race, no matter the track, this ‘wall-riding’ is going to be a play. “That’s how you made speed in the video game — that’s what you did. “There’s no rule against it. I mean, I did that when I was 8 years old.

But all (five) of us could have done the same thing.” “I mean, it was awesome, it was cool. Any of us could’ve done it, but is it fair to the (five) guys he passed? Larson said it is “not a good look.” He explains … “I wish that I would have done it now,” Briscoe said of Chastain’s move. Hamlin, eliminated by Chastain’s charge, admitted his team’s struggles in the pits played a factor in not making it to the title race. … We lost on a move that’s fair game.” Kyle Larson is not a fan of the last-lap move by Ross Chastain along the wall. It might not work, but I’ll try it.” That was cool.” Chastain said he had never tried anything like that in a car before. “That was crazy,” Custer said.

Chastain went full throttle up against the outside wall, passing five cars in one corner to make the final round of the NASCAR playoffs.

Chastain earned the team's first-ever win in a dramatic finish at Circuit of the Americas in March, and then got his second win with a last lap pass coming to the checkered flag at Talladega in April. "Well, I played a lot of NASCAR 2005 on the Gamecube with (brother) Chad growing up, and you could get away with it," Chastain told NBC Sports. Even as his car slid along the wall, the massive discrepancy in speed between Chastain and the cars well in front of him led to Chastain darting all the way up to fifth at the finish line, edging Hamlin -- who looked to be safely in the Championship 4 coming off the final corner -- by a carlength.

Ross Chastain used a move more suited for a video game to also advance in Sunday's thrilling regular season finale at Martinsville Speedway.

It was Bell who was caught in Bubba Wallace’s retaliation of Kyle Larson at Las Vegas and Bell being collected in that crash dropped him to last of the eight drivers. “I mean, I did that when I was 8 years old. “You can get away with it. “Oh, played a lot of NASCAR 2005 on the Game Cube with Chad growing up,” he said. [October 30, 2022] Bell also won on the Charlotte Motor Speedway road course in the final race of the second round of the playoffs, so has now twice advanced with victories.

Ross Chastain "fully committed" to banzai last-lap NASCAR move (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Ross Chastain used a daring video game-like move on the final lap in Sunday's race at Martinsville to charge his way into the NASCAR Cup Series title race.

Bubba Wallace claimed his maiden NASCAR Cup Series at Talladega on Monday to become the first Black victor in the category since Wendell Scott in 1963. It’s not just Formula 1 that’s set for upheaval in 2022, as the NASCAR Cup series adopts its Next Gen cars that will cast any in-built advantages aside and require teams to adopt a totally new way of operating. After holding his nerve and hip-checking his teammate on the run to the line, Austin Cindric made a perfect start to life as a full-timer in the NASCAR Cup Series by winning the Daytona 500.

“Whether they were congratulating me for the wildness of it or they were genuinely happy, I’m not sure,” Chastain said. Others just tipped their cap to a move that only seemed possible or a digital race track or through the magic of cinematography. Chastain limped the scuffed and battered car – a control arm broken and brakes gone – back to pit road and pumped his fist as the crowd cheered. I didn’t know if the physics would work to make it around the corner, but it did. The whirlwind turn of events comes in just his first year with the Trackhouse Racing bunch, which debuted just last season as a one-car effort. Chastain did not lift, and the force of his No. We live by ‘why not?’ To apply that to the Cup Series in this scenario, there are rules. For Chastain, he was still trying to wrap his own head around how a maneuver his brother, Chad, had used on him in a NASCAR game from 2005 for the Nintendo GameCube had somehow worked in real life. The holiest of Hail Marys pushed Chastain from a one-point deficit to a four-point edge over Denny Hamlin for the last title-eligible berth in next Sunday’s season finale at Phoenix Raceway. “I’ve done a lot of sim work this week, a lot of iRacing, a lot of stuff, laps here virtually. – Ross Chastain picked Lap 500 to turn the NASCAR Cup Series’ fastest lap in the history of Martinsville Speedway. And true to the form of Trackhouse Racing’s reputation as disruptors in its brief existence, this latest master stroke from the journeyman driver came through unconventional means with some of the highest stakes possible riding on it.

Chastain stunned the racing world as he sped along the wall in the final turn and secured the fourth and final NASCAR Cup Championship 4 spot on points.

I did that when I was 8 years old." "That's not a good look for our sport," Larson said. He put the car against the wall, wide open all the way around Turn 3 and 4," Dale Earnhardt Jr. "And I never knew if it would actually work. Just yards away from the finish line, Chastain passed Hamlin to secure the fourth spot in the Championship 4. Halfway through the final lap, that seemed improbable.

Kyle Larson said that the move was embarrassing and I grabbed fifth gear, and I asked off of [turn] two on the last lap if we needed it, and we did.” Chastain finished ahead of Hamlin with the desperation move to clinch his place in the finale. With Chastain in tenth place and Hamlin in fifth, it seemed like the Trackhouse driver’s pursuit for the championship was about to end. “I played a lot of NASCAR 2005 on the GameCube with Chad [Chastain, his brother] growing up and you could get away with it. The spectators, the broadcasters and even the other drivers were in disbelief over what happened behind Gibbs.

Ross Chastain's Wall Ride Should Be Immortalized, But Not Repeated (RoadandTrack.com)

The magic of the moment was the urgency. If riding the wall at Martinsville becomes a strategy, NASCAR will suffer.

A huge part of the sport is figuring something out before your competitors and using that unfair advantage while that particular iron is hot. This is a heroic moment in the history of stock car racing, one that deserves celebration even if it merits new rules from the series itself. When that happens, and when teams establish a list of tracks where the strategy works, it will slowly go from a late race desperation option to a field-wide must. A significant part of auto racing is finding those unfair advantages, the things that give a driver or team a significant and repeatable boost. Sure, he successfully destroyed the right side of his car, but just by riding the wall in those final two corners he set a lap time of 18.8, a full second faster than the weekend's pole time and about two seconds up on race pace the lap before. It also opened up a can of worms that will be difficult to close back up.

Chastain was well aware that the move could have wrecked his car, saying, "I didn't know if the physics would work to make it around the corner." On the final lap of the 2022 Xfinity 500, the penultimate race in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, Ross Chastain knew he needed to overtake Denny Hamlin to advance to the final round. The move looked like something straight out of a video game, and Chastain readily admitted to drawing inspiration from the gaming world.
