They didn't give us a chance to breathe or build up." Arango had already twice forced saves out of the besieged Stuver when he might have found the net, before LAFC's lead was doubled from another set-piece. After a long VAR check, though, no penalty was awarded. I'm very proud of the guys, but what I experienced in the locker room was hunger and a want for more." "A lot of credit goes to LAFC, they made it difficult for us," Austin coach Wolff said. But from the resulting corner, LAFC finally took the lead. "It was fundamental that our team come out with compact pressure. A combination of Austin defender That was so we could go into the half with the lead," Arango, who took his tally to 32 goals in 53 MLS games, said through an interpreter. Before this year, Crepeau had played on only one winning team in MLS and Kellyn Acosta and Ryan Hollingshead had never won more than one playoff game in the same season. Then there’s Sánchez, the winter free-agent signing who has done more to transform LAFC than any of the offseason additions. “But this is not the one we want to have, or not the only one that we want to have. “The season is long, there’s ups and downs, there’s moments where your legs are not feeling 100%. Crepeau was one of seven starters Sunday who are finishing their first full season with LAFC and were not part of the team’s previous playoff disappointments. “We’ll keep the level of focus as high as possible for a week and hope to have a similar press conference next Saturday.” That was 2014, the year a group of investors, that included Mandalay Entertainment head Peter Guber, paid MLS more than $100 million for the rights to put an expansion team in Los Angeles. “We have that opportunity next week.” That pressure finally paid off in the 29th minute when That goal was a big one since LAFC hasn’t lost this season when scoring multiple times. “The idea has come true,” Guber said. But the [US international](https://www.mlssoccer.com/clubs/us-men-s-national-team/) set the tempo for the Black & Gold in midfield and his set-piece delivery was reliable. [Cifuentes](https://www.mlssoccer.com/players/jose-cifuentes/) nearly opened the scoring with an absolute thunderbolt off the post. [Chiellini](https://www.mlssoccer.com/players/giorgio-chiellini/)'s ability to deal with the physicality of Djitté, but the veteran hardly broke a sweat. The Supporters' Shield-winning manager stuck with what worked for him all season and was rewarded with a dominant performance in front of the 3252. [Hollingshead](https://www.mlssoccer.com/players/ryan-hollingshead/). Cherundolo and LAFC have found their form at the right time, and are one game away from capping off their season with MLS Cup. Bouanga saw a shot cleared off the line early in the match and had a late goal ruled out for offside. He was perhaps fortunate to only receive a yellow card for a hard tackle, but put in an otherwise vintage performance to lead LAFC to their first MLS Cup appearance. Murillo was a tackle and duel-winning machine for the Black & Gold. [Acosta](https://www.mlssoccer.com/players/kellyn-acosta/). How Philadelphia Union and LAFC reached MLS Cup (ESPN)

For the first time since 2003, the top seed in each conference -- Philadelphia in the East, LAFC in the West -- will do battle for MLS Cup.

[Jack McGlynn](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/303512/Jack-McGlynn), the list goes on. Now it's up to LAFC to finish the deal, and fulfill the promise that they have shown since their inaugural season back in 2018. The Spaniard was a free agent at the end of 2021, and the prevailing thought was that he no longer had the legs to be a mainstay in a team's lineup. Credit GM Ernst Tanner for spotting talent that would work in MLS, as well as manager [Jim Curtin](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/319479/Jim-Curtin) who molded it into a team that has been consistently been among the best in MLS over the past three seasons. The fact that Arango has scored 32 goals in 53 games -- including two this postseason -- makes his contribution priceless. The goal also highlighted Arango's underrated ability in the air. But there have been plenty of times when a dominant team failed to cash in on its opportunities and then got punished -- ultimately, Arango's tally provided a bit of calm and confidence. But as the old adage goes, sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't make, and so it proved for LAFC in its 3-0 Western Conference victory over Austin FC. [San Jose Earthquakes](/soccer/team?id=191) over the Chicago Fire by a score of 4-2 with some wild changes in momentum. Philadelphia's collective hands [couldn't hold](/soccer/major-league-soccer/story/4540676/nycfcs-depth-outlasts-covid-stricken-philadelphia-as-mls-cup-calls-for-bronx-blues) a 1-0 lead, and NYCFC went on to claim that year's MLS Cup. Credit the Union for punishing mistakes, but it was a spell one normally doesn't associate with the reigning MLS Cup champions. And so, the Union now find themselves in their first MLS Cup.

For us, a big thing is not getting lackadaisical with it and showing up next week with the exact same mentality. There’s moments where you just don’t get up for a game in the same way and all that gets scratched when it’s playoff time. Union to face LAFC in 2022 MLS Cup (philadelphiaunion.com)

For the first time in club history, Philadelphia Union is headed to MLS Cup as they will face off against LAFC on Saturday, November 5th.

The Union succeeded in getting the first touch but saw it fall to Franco Escobar at the far post. LAFC responded in the second half as Cristian Arango won a clearance and drove into the attacking third. The left back delivered a curling cross that skipped through the defense and led to a calm finish by Daniel Gazdag to make it 1-0 just nine minutes after the opening whistle. LAFC doubled its advantage in the second half via a Maximiliano Urruti own goal in the 62nd minute before Kwadwo Opoku capped things off with a third for the final result. The 2022 Supporters' Shield winners opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a set piece goal from Cristian Arango to jump start the offense. The Boys in Blue captured the Eastern Conference crown in front of a sold out Subaru Park on Sunday night, rallying back from a second-half deficit powered behind quick goals from Julian Carranza and Daniel Gazdag in the 65th and 67th minutes to defeat New York City FC.

Bohls: Austin FC falters in West final to star-studded Los Angeles FC (Austin American-Statesman)

LOS ANGELES — In this town, it's all about star power. From the 2,695 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to megacelebrities from LeBron to Leo to Tarantino ...

That did a 180 this season as Austin, fueled by MVP candidate Driussi and his 22 regular-season and MLS-best three playoff goals and dynamic winger Fagúndez, who was dangerously effective with his curving free kicks, was the second highest-scoring team in the league. 2 seed and challenged the West’s best team while East champion Philadelphia quarreled with defending MLS champion New York City FC in the other semifinal. That said, a couple of hundred more were sequestered throughout the 5-year-old facility, which sits next door to the Los Angeles Coliseum, where multimillionaire Lincoln Riley lifted his USC Trojans over Arizona the night before. It stood an embarrassing 12th in the Western Conference a year ago, doomed by an AWOL offense and poor defensive transition. Alas, that was a 2-0 loss to the Los Angelinos, who also swept all three of their showdowns with Austin. Just win, baby, and LA did, taking the Supporters’ Shield by winning a league-high 22 games, getting a first-round bye and then holding off the LA Galaxy with a 93rd-minute goal from Cristian Arango. To maximize its chances of winning its first MLS Cup ever in its five years of existence, LAFC made Sebastián Driussi a harmless spectator. Quite frankly, Verde saved its worst for last or one of its worsts, mostly thanks to tight pressure from LAFC, which allowed only 38 goals all season, the third-best performance in the league. None does more so than El Tree because all 36 home games have been sold out at the Q. The table was turned dramatically this year. "Today wasn't one of our better games," Austin winger Diego Fagúndez said. Well, a lot more than a pinch with three MLS All-Stars to Austin's one.
