Justin Fields has had a rough time since arriving in the NFL last year, but he didn't do himself any favors during Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys.
The 23-year-old responded by leading a 13-play touchdown drive on Chicago's next possession. It's not a good excuse, especially for a player who isn't a rookie, but it could very well be the case. The most likely explanation for what happened is Fields forgot that in the NFL, unlike college, you have to touch a downed opponent for the play to be over.
In their game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Bears RB David Montgomery fumbled and the fumble was recovered by Cowboys LB Micah Parsons. Normally, this ...
In the NFL, players can get up and run with the ball if they recover a fumble due to the forward advancement rule. In college, when a fumble is recovered by the other team and they hit the ground, the player is immediately ruled down—no advancement of the ball can happen. As you can see, QB Justin Fields decides to leap over Parsons instead of actually touching him, meaning that Parsons is still a live ballcarrier.
Justin Fields and the Bears are trying to make a comeback against the Cowboys in Week 8. This Micah Parsons fumble return didn't help.
Fields didn’t throw the ball that much, but he didn’t make mistakes with his arm and didn’t turn the ball over as part of an efficient performance. Chicago had actually trimmed a 28-7 deficit to 28-23 earlier in the second half, but Dallas responded with a quick touchdown drive and then got this Parsons fumble return right after that. [35-23](https://www.espn.com/nfl/boxscore/_/gameId/401437807), Bears running back David Montgomery hauled in a Fields pass and was fighting for a first down on third-and-long.

He needed it behind an offensive line that featured not a single projected starter from the first day of training camp. All-world linebacker Micah Parsons returned a David Montgomery fumble 36 yards for a touchdown with five minutes left in the third quarter, falling to the ground and getting up only after Fields leapt over him — and didn’t touch him. On the fifth one, Eddie Jackson intercepted a pass with 40 seconds left in the first half. In the second quarter, Fields even went into the blue injury tent, though he didn’t miss a snap. Fields went 17-for-23 for 151 yards, two touchdowns and a 120 passer rating, running eight times for 60 yards and another score. It was that kind of day for Fields, who was battered by an elite Cowboys defense and still managed 29 points behind a run-heavy offense that featured some deep shots.
The former Ohio State quarterback made a clear mental mistake against the Cowboys Sunday afternoon.

The difference with Harry is he has great hands. That TD catch is bound to get him on Justin Fields’ good side. The Bears’ primary issue at wide receiver this season is not having any guys that can make tough, contested catches. The Chicago Bears were staring into a 14-0 hole against the Dallas Cowboys after falling behind early. But Justin Fields took matters into his own hands to ...
The Cowboys continue to jump all over the defense and lead 28-7 close to the end of the second quarter. It was a nice response for the Bears but it could be all for not. 32 of those yards were thanks to Fields and his running ability as he had two big gains before dashing into the end zone for the three-yard touchdown.
Because, in what was a carbon copy of the Chicago Bears' first scoring drive last week, Justin Fields was up to his old tricks again.
The Fields TD run capped a 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive. And it was much needed after Dallas stormed out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead. WATCH: Justin Fields Scores the Bears’ First TD vs.

Expect more of the same from the Chicago Bears today. Those are the types of fun things you’re going to see today. It seems as if the Chicago Bears may have found their winning formula for Justin Fields coming off what may have been the best game of his young career against the Patriots — 179 passing yards, 82 rushing yards.
Mac Jones and Justin Fields had interceptions wiped out by roughing the passer penalties, which is the way the NFL wants it.
Vincent also said that quarterbacks drive ratings, and that’s why the NFL is going to protect the quarterback. Because in Article 11 [of the rulebook], this is the one rule – and we have a ton of rules – where the judgment you give the referee, that white hat, is the latitude to call that play in real time. NFL EVP of Football Operations Troy Vincent recently said as much after controversial roughing calls against Chris Jones of the Chiefs and Grady Jarrett of the Faocons.
The Bears may have lost 49-29 to the Dallas Cowboys, but fans are thrilled with the progression Justin Fields has shown.
Now spend all that money and get him some help. The Chicago Bears franchise is heading in the right direction. I really don't care how bad the defense is, or how the WRs keep letting them down. Justin Fields is now stacking good performances. A loss like this in which our QB shined I will definitely accept This is a rebuilding roster that has too many holes on it currently. [October 30, 2022] While the rest of the quarterbacks from 2021 NFL Draft struggled on Sunday, Fields showed he has taken significant steps and is on his way towards becoming a true franchise quarterback. He cleaned up some of his mistakes that plagued him, such as more accurate passes to the outside and protecting the football better. Fields also had the highest quarterback rating of his career with 120.0. The Bears lost to the Dallas Cowboys 49-29, giving up six defensive touchdowns, but there were bright spots that have fans feeling optimistic about the future. After a rough start to his season, Fields has progressed well over the last few weeks.
Fields wasn't at fault for the turnover, but needed to make the heads-up play to prevent the touchdown. He failed to make it.
Though the second-year quarterback isn't at fault for the turnover, he should have known to touch Parsons down. The play started with a 13-yard pass from Fields to David Montgomery. While the turnover itself did plenty of damage for Chicago, the play wouldn't have resulted in a score for Dallas if not for a mental error by Justin Fields.
