Dolphins Overcome Early Deficit to Win at Detroit (Sports Illustrated)

The Miami Dolphins rallied from two 14-point deficits to defeat the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

Also, you can follow me on Twitter at @PoupartNFL, and that's where you can ask questions for the regular All Dolphins mailbags. The defense gave up pass plays of 58 yards to tight end T.J. After Ingold's touchdown on the first drive of the second half moved the Dolphins to within 27-24, the defense got a stop when the Lions committed three consecutive penalties to create a first-and-30 from which they couldn't recover; and in the fourth quarter got a stop with a Zach Sieler third-down sack followed by the fourth-down stop. After giving up a lot of big plays in the first half on their way to a 27-17 deficit, the Dolphins defense shut out Detroit in the second half.

5 things to watch: Lions vs. Dolphins (detroitlions.com)

Tim Twentyman takes a look at five things to watch in Sunday's Lions-Dolphins matchup.

The Lions are fifth in the NFL with a 5.3-yard average per rush and have seven rushing touchdowns on the year. The Dolphins like to get the ball in their hands in a number of different ways. Paschal played 56 snaps, which is pretty remarkable considering he missed all of training camp and the first five weeks of the season rehabbing from sports hernia surgery. He's got the most yards before contact per rushing attempt (4.1) by any running back in the NFL this season. But Miami also runs a lot of crossers and speed motions to get the ball in these guys' hands short and quick to let them use their run-after-catch ability to make big plays. Over the last two games in which Detroit failed to score a touchdown vs. The Dolphins are stout upfront and play a 3-4 read and react game. The Detroit Lions are looking to snap a four-game losing streak today as they host a Miami Dolphins team looking to keep pace with the rest of the current playoff teams in the AFC. They're hard to move off the ball. The Lions have been a consistently good running football team all season long, averaging 145.7 yards per game. The Lions are back in the friendly confines of Ford Field for the first time since Oct. And the Dolphins have a lot of it.

Dolphins LG Liam Eichenberg carted off vs. Lions (Dolphins Wire)

Miami Dolphins left guard Liam Eichenberg appeared to suffer a pretty serious knee injury during the third quarter of their Week 8 game.

Miami will have a decision to make regarding who will take his spot. There’s also a chance that center Connor Williams moves back to his natural position with Deiter coming back at center. The former Fighting Irish offensive lineman did well to hold his blocker off of Tua Tagovailoa on the play that he was injured, resulting in a receiving touchdown for tight end Mike Gesicki.

Recap: Lions blow 10-point halftime lead, lose 31-27 to Dolphins (prideofdetroit.com)

The Detroit Lions offense jumped to a nice lead, but after getting shut out in the second half, the Dolphins took the lead and held it.

The Lions finally got a defensive stop on the next drive. Goff targeted Josh Reynolds for a deep shot, and couldn’t connect, giving the Dolphins the ball back with 2:52 left. Detroit would eventually get a stop on a third-and-16 after a JuJu Hughes sack, but the Dolphins kicked a 45-yard field goal to push it back to a one-possession game with 2:06 left in the half. The Lions still didn’t have an answer for Tagovailoa and company. During the drive, the Lions announced that starting nickelback AJ Parker was questionable to return with a hip injury. Detroit went to the ground game to try to slow down the shootout a little bit. Tagovailoa answered with a 42-yard bomb to Hill to start the next drive. Detroit appeared to have gotten a stop to hold the Dolphins to a field goal, but an illegal contact on Detroit gave Miami a fresh set of downs. Goff uncorked a deep shot on the first play of the second quarter, and although it was underthrown, Kalif Raymond adjusted and made the 43-yard catch all the way down to the Dolphins’ 5-yard line. In the end, the Lions need someone, anyone to make a play in the final quarter, and as has become customary for this team, no one was up for the challenge. A couple of run plays got the Dolphins to midfield, but a sack from Malcolm Rodriguez pushed Miami back. Detroit failed to score a single point in the second half.

Dolphins-Lions: The Five Biggest Plays (DolphinMaven)

Breaking down the five plays that most decided the outcome in the Miami Dolphins' 31-27 victory against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

After Detroit scored a third touchdown to go up 21-7, the Dolphins came right back on first down after the touchback with another bomb to Hill, this one good for 42 yards. That play set up the 29-yard TD pass to Waddle and kept the Dolphins right on the Lions' heels — until they eventually caught up and passed them. Tua had a good number of really pretty throws, and his 29-yard pass to Waddle on third-and-6 in the second quarter was right up there. This came with the Dolphins trailing 27-24 in the third quarter when Tua felt pressure from the outside, saw the big hole in front of him and then ran 18 yards for a first down at the Detroit 29, setting up his touchdown pass to Mike Gesicki. It might be weird to point to a play in the first quarter when the Dolphins were down 14-0 but wasn't a touchdown as the biggest play, but this was about slowing the Detroit momentum. In a normal four-point game, this likely would have ranked higher, but does anybody really think Detroit would have stopped the Dolphins offense had the Lions left any time on the clock?

RECAP: Lions vs. Dolphins (detroitlions.com)

Miami was looking to counter on their first possession of the game, but rookie safety Kerby Joseph forced the ball loose from Dolphins wide receiver Braylon ...

Trailing 31-27 in the final minutes of the game, the Lions were driving in Dolphins territory at the Miami 36. Miami struck first in the second half taking their opening drive of the third quarter 75 yards in nine plays capped off by a Alec Ingold 1-yard run that trimmed Detroit's lead to 27-24. Miami chipped into the lead late in the first quarter on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Tua Tagovailoa to Jaylen Waddle. Both teams combined for 592 yards of offense in the first half alone. The Dolphins racked up 476 yards in total offense on the afternoon. The Detroit Lions were looking to get out of their offensive funk Sunday against the Miami Dolphins at Ford Field.

Dolphins-Lions Week 8 Complete Observations (DolphinMaven)

-- On third-and-3 from the Lions 11, Tua threw a beautiful floating pass over a defender to Mike Gesicki for the go-ahead touchdown. -- The Dolphins again came right back to cut the lead back to seven, with Tua connecting with Hill for a 42-yard gain on first down and capping the drive with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Waddle on third-and-6. -- After having Chase Edmonds run on first and second down, the Dolphins botched a third-and-8 when Connor Williams snapped prematurely as Tua was moving forward in the shotgun to shout something. The turnover on downs gave the Dolphins the ball at their 36 (yard-line change) with a chance to kill the clock. -- The Dolphins then watched the Lions offense self-destruct on their next possession to get the ball back. -- The defense gave up three runs for 26 yards at the start of Detroit's next possession and then allowed a 12-yard completion to Amon-Ra St. but that was until the Lions ran a fake punt on fourth-and-2 from their own 33. -- On the final play of the quarter, a third-and-4 from the Lions 31, Noah Igbinoghene appeared to have man coverage against St. -- But Tua completions of 14 yards to Trent Sherfield and 13 yards to Waddle converted third-and-13 and third-and-6 situations. -- The second quarter began with another bad play by the defense, who let Raymond get free deep for a 43-yard gain that should have been a touchdown if not for an underthrown ball by Goff. Hockenson beating Jevon Holland to the sideline on a third-and-2 and then turning upfield for a 58-yard gain. -- Jevon Holland had a nice pass breakup in the final minute of the first quarter when he punched the ball out of Amon-Ra St.

Detroit Lions Lack of physicality dooms pass defense as Dolphins ... (Detroit Free Press)

Dan Campbell wanted his defensive backs to take a hands-on approach with speedy Miami Dolphins receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle on Sunday. Literally.

"I mean, we hope, but we’ll take it as it comes," he said. "We didn’t handle their speed well," Campbell said. "Certainly, he’s not 100-percent, but we got a few plays out of him.” "We didn’t hit them," Campbell said. "That was definitely a thing, us trying to get our hands on them and limit their speed down the field," Lions cornerback Will Harris said. His 36-yard catch came on a third-and-13 play when he got a free release at the line of scrimmage.

The Lions were especially bad on third down — Miami converted 8 of 11 chances — including a wobbly, underthrown ball to Hill in the first quarter that could have been defended by Lions corner A.J. The turnover problem has started to turn a bit with the emergence of apparent takeaway artist Kerby Joseph, who had a second forced fumble in as many weeks on Sunday. "Pretty much just trying to be as physical as possible in the box, outside the box in coverage...and really just trying to stick to the game plan, man. Just try to be as physical as possible, make as many plays as possible for this team." Lions cornerbacks Jeff Okudah and Will Harris said they played a lot more zone coverage than is typical this Sunday, which doesn't really work when you're unable to meet the physical demands of that style of play. He said they had a plan to stop Hill and Waddle — they just didn't execute.
