Will Mets or Yankees make a run at Justin Verlander in free agency? (Newsday)

The Astros starter holds an option to be a free agent, and the Mets and Yankees have the financial means and roster flexibility to merit such an addition.

They have Gerrit Cole (a former Houston teammate of Verlander’s), Luis Severino (whose team option is likely to be picked up), Nestor Cortes, Frankie Montas and Domingo German in the fold for next year. The comparison that came to mind at the time: Nolan Ryan, who pitched for 27 seasons until he was 46. That is part of why, for example, Jacob deGrom intends to opt out of his contract this offseason and become a free agent for the first time at age 34. He signed a one-year deal for $25 million, with another one year and $25 million for 2023 via a player option that kicked in when he reached 130 innings in the regular season. He sounded this week as if he is looking forward to the latter. He has said in the past that he wants to pitch until he is 45.

Revisionist History: 3 teams that should've signed Justin Verlander (FanSided)

The Houston Astros signed Justin Verlander to a two-year, $50 million contract last offseason, but it wasn't without some level of competition.

However, when the Dodgers lost Max Scherzer, they could’ve used another veteran near the top of the rotation to take his place. But it was impossible to see this sort of rebound coming, and there’s a good chance they’ll be in on JV again should he opt out of that Astros deal this offseason. The high AAV for a 39-year-old pitcher was too much to pass up, especially for Verlander coming off Tommy John surgery.
