There's no clear consensus to be found on Twitter when it comes to responses to the Kansas City Chiefs trade for WR Kadarius Toney.
On Thursday, the Chiefs officially sent a third-round pick (a compensatory one from losing Ryan Poles to the Chicago Bears as general manager) and a sixth-round choice in exchange for Toney. A deal for Toney gives the Chiefs an extra offensive weapon going forward, especially into 2023 when the cupboard looks quite bare. While no player is a sure thing, Toney comes with a few more question marks than other wide receivers and those concerns are being lifted up among the mixed responses seen on Twitter in the minutes after the [Kansas City Chiefs traded with the New York Giants for Toney](https://arrowheadaddict.com/2022/10/27/kc-chiefs-trade-kadarius-toney-giants/).
Did the Giants give up on Toney too soon or did the Chiefs overpay for a talented but flawed wide receiver?
The best part of this deal is that it’s easy to see what both teams agreed to in such a transaction. Instead, the Chiefs believe Toney, under the leadership of Reid and Mahomes, will reach his potential and be a quality teammate for a Super Bowl contender. There’s always going to be a what-if scenario — that Toney finally finds sustained health and blossoms into the talented receiver the Chiefs hope they’re getting. Frankly, if there’s a team you don’t want to send Toney to, the Chiefs fit the bill given how explosive they are and how well Reid has rewired and used other talented offensive players in the past. The upside for the Chiefs is that Toney, if healthy, could become a significant option in a pass-heavy offense designed by coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and led by Mahomes. Carroll: You may be thinking the return for sending away a 2021 first-round pick should be more than one Day 2 and one Day 3 pick. The Chiefs, though, couldn’t acquire Toney during the 2021 draft, since their pick was at the bottom of the first round. The Athletic’s Chiefs writer Nate Taylor and Giants writer Charlotte Carroll react to the trade: He said, “Thought it was for the best of the team and wish Kadarius well.” The Giants went into the 2022 season in rebuild mode bringing in Schoen and new coach Brian Daboll.
The New York Giants traded former first-round draft pick Kadarius Toney to the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday.
The Jets would probably have to be blown away by an offer in order to trade Moore. He also is not particularly big (5-9, 173), and the Giants already have a small, elusive receiver — Wan’Dale Robinson — who Schoen just picked in Round 2 this year. Hamler has also done basically nothing as a pro — 381 yards as a rookie, then 74 in three games last year, and 113 so far this year. It’s highly unlikely they would trade him to the Giants, if they trade him at all. Hamler](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4240380/kj-hamler), Broncos: He was a second-round pick in 2020, so it’s a similar situation to Claypool — affordable rookie contract, but no fifth-year option available for 2024. Jeudy (6-1, 193) has these slot/wide snap ratios through three seasons — 251/553 as a rookie, then 305/106 last year, and 222/120 so far this year. Claypool (6-foot-4, 238 pounds) is a big-bodied outside receiver — even though he’s played mostly in the slot this year — who had 873 and 860 yards his first two seasons. This year, it’s been 70 snaps outside and 38 in the slot. [Chase Claypool](https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/10/27/are-the-steelers-willing-to-trade-chase-claypool/), [Steelers](https://www.steelers.com/): Given his pinched salary cap situation (about $3.2 million in room right now), Schoen needs to be looking for an affordable player. Schoen has four picks in the first three rounds, including two in Round 3. At this point, Schoen has nine picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, after the Chiefs sent him a third- and sixth-rounder for Toney. The Toney trade made that forward-looking approach obvious.
