The Utah Jazz have a roster filled with veteran players who have no interest in losing. This reality might hurt their tanking aspirations.
As a result, this Utah Jazz team has players coveted by playoff teams and ought to jump on those opportunities soon before they continue their winning ways. Though many assumed that Utah Jazz would be best positioned for this after unloading quite a bit of talent in the offseason, they might not have the best odds based on their roster and their play thus far. [Mike Conley](https://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/3195/mikeconley) is past his prime, but he remains a viable backup option for teams that are short on point guards.

Houston (+1.5) is looking for its first win, and a matchup with Utah — on night two of a road back-to-back — could offer an ideal chance.
Between Mike Conley, Jordan Clarkson, Lauri Markkanen, and Kelly Olynyk, Utah has ample experience in its expected starting lineup — though it’s possible that new head coach Will Hardy might rest someone, given the road back-to-back. They’ve made a name for themselves in crashing the offensive boards and forcing turnovers defensively. Look for him to shoot a lot of threes and deploy his outstanding athleticism going at the rim. This could very well be a scheduled loss. Outlier shooting nights in their last two contests against the Tate is one of the Rockets’ primary defenders and a key part of their transition game. [Per FiveThirtyEight](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2023-nba-predictions/games/), however, Utah is a 5 point favorite (69% probability for a win). The Utah Jazz advantage from the 3P line thus far is a fairly large asterisk on their 3-0 start:— Adam Bushman (@adam_bushman) [per Cleaning the Glass](https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/). We have a Jazz Rockets prediction and pick as well as the NBA odds for the October 24 clash between the two Western Conference foes.
leads the team with six assists per game, and ranks second in scoring, averaging 19 points. Look for Smith to take on larger roles as the season goes on, and with a matchup against the Jazz on slate, he could try to take advantage of some loose matchups. Most concerning is the turnovers, as Houston has given the ball up an average of 14.7 times per game. Jalen Green now leads the Rockets with 23.7 points per game on 43.3 percent shooting. Meanwhile, veteran winger Eric Gordon is averaging 14 points and four assists per game in his seventh season with Houston. Porter has shot an impressive 52.9 percent from behind the arc, showcasing his versatility as a scorer and playmaker early on in the year. Houston’s leading scorer Christian Wood was traded to the Dallas Mavericks this summer, leaving a hole in the offense. Mike Conley has turned back the clock to lead the team with nine assists per game, all while scoring 10.7 points. Green shot at a 34 percent clip from 3-point rang last year, but really came into his own down the stretch. Jordan Clarkson ranks second on the team, scoring nineteen points per game while dishing out 5.7 assists. Instead, Lauri Markkanen leads the team by scoring an average of 24 points, while grabbing 9.7 rebounds per game. Utah has opened their season 3-0, one of four unbeaten teams remaining in the league.
This will be the first game where the Jazz will have more talent on the court, but coming off an emotional win, paired with two games in two nights, is a recipe ...
Can the Jazz still play with a chip on their shoulder, even though they’re facing a team that is trending to be in the lottery? Can the bench pick up the slack and give the Jazz more minutes on the court to account for some tired legs we might see on Monday night? Utah will be looking to ride the emotion of beating three projected playoff teams in the first week of the season.
Despite a 3-0 start, the rumor mill still has the Utah Jazz as sellers.
Another issue is the Lakers getting off to a slow start this season. Also, does Utah getting off to an unexpected fast start change how it views Clarkson as a potential trade chip? League sources say that before the Jazz sent Bojan Bogdanovic to the [Detroit] Pistons, the Lakers offered Westbrook, a future first-round pick, and second-rounders for Bogdanovic and others. Sources expect the Lakers and Jazz to resume talks later in the season with some combination of other players discussed. So the question is, at age 30, how would Clarkson fit into Utah's long-term plans as it starts its rebuild? Although trading the former Sixth Man of the Year would be a huge blow to the 2022-23 Jazz team, it still may be in the best of the franchise to part ways if they can get a potential lottery pick in return.
Professional sports are like many other industries. The goals of management and the employees are not always aligned.
The players’ job is to play hard and attempt to win, regardless of how much their employers have to hide their disappointment with every victory. The Houston Texans do appear to be what they were projected to be — the worst team in the league. For all that the Jazz’s roster lacks, they do have veteran talent, and Danny Ainge might have to find a way to get rid of some of that veteran experience to be sure and anchor the Jazz into the bottom five. 1 overall pick, and if they have the fifth-worst record, they have a 12.5 percent chance as opposed to 14. After six games, the Panthers turned out to be in the same position as the Jazz — arguably the worst team in the league. The Jazz had jettisoned their two best players, and all of their key contributors, with the exception for Jordan Clarkson and Mike Conley.

It's a process but we want to win games. We want to win games even though we're young. "The grit, the grind. Houston coach Stephen Silas made it clear that rotation fluctuations will be a part of the process for the youthful Rockets, at least early this season. The offseason remodeling reshaped expectations for Utah, with many presuming the Jazz would aim to tank and improve their draft positioning for next summer. "Just fighting," Clarkson said of the approach.

The Houston Rockets face the Utah Jazz at home on Monday, October 24. The Jazz’s starting frontcourt of Lauri Markkanen and Kelly Olynyk relies on finesse and 3-point shooting. These are the odds, injury reports, and starters for the Rockets vs Jazz’s October 22 matchup. Expect Gordon to slot back in at small forward against the Jazz. Someone who can play off the ball better (or is just more effective wit the ball in their hands) would be ideal, which is why Conley could make a bit more sense for L.A. If Markkanen is actually this good now, he'd be the top asset either team could offer. Rudy Gay would give the Lakers another stretch four option off the bench, as a career 35% shooter on 3.1 attempts. This writer thinks Malik Beasley, a 26-year-old an athletic shooting guard averaging 10.4 points a game on a .429/.385/.814 slash line over the course of his career, could also be an interesting fit. Markkanen is making a pretty reasonable $16.5 million this season and will be under contract through the 2024-25 season, so L.A. Another wrinkle that could throw a wrench into a potential Sexton deal: after agreeing to a $72 million deal in a sign-and-trade with the Cavs, Sexton is not trade-eligible again until January 15, 2023. needs: a floor-spacing stretch four who, through these first three games at least, is playing with incredible tenacity and flashing the kind of All-Star versatility in his offensive game (he seems newly committed to aggressively driving inside) that convinced the Chicago Bulls to trade for his draft rights as the seventh pick in 2017 out of Arizona. Los Angeles possesses two future first-round draft picks that will most likely land near the top of the lottery in 2027 and 2029. They look decidedly worse than the Jazz, but since they don't actually own the rights to their draft pick this year (the New Orleans Pelicans can swap picks with L.A. Your Los Angeles Lakers have already dealt with Ainge once since his fire sale began, taking back Beverley in a deal that sent Talen Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson to Utah. All-Stars Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, plus role players Royce O'Neal, Bojan Bogdanovic and Patrick Beverley (a throw-in from the Gobert deal who never actually played a game in Utah), all found new homes through Ainge's dealmaking this offseason. If the team were to win its play-in tournament games and enter the NBA's actual playoffs, it would forfeit a lottery slot entirely.

In his first extended minutes of the season, Simone Fontecchio showed off what he has to offer the Utah Jazz.
They knew that they were going to be switchy and quick. The Jazz knew that they were facing a Rockets team that is super young and super fast and likes to run and space. It’s the job of the coaching staff to allow for those opportunities and the job of the player to make the most of them. But it certainly doesn’t help that the opponent was an incredibly young team that was desperate for a win. They aren’t going to want to give themselves an easy out, but it was clear from the start of this one that they were lacking in the energy department. and Jalen Green combined for 72 points as the Rockets earned their first victory of the season.

Utah was sloppy with the ball and committed a total of 20 turnovers when it was said and done. Both teams were playing their fourth game in six nights, but it was the Rockets that came out of the gates with a little more juice and were able to build a six-point lead at halftime, 51-45. Kessler had some rookie learning moments as he picked up four fouls in just eight minutes of action. Finding a trade partner is plausible if he was packaged with multiple players, but keep in mind that would water down any return that might come Utah’s way. Gay’s trade value continues to plummet as he was scoreless in 13 minutes of action on 0-for-5 shooting. It was a game where the bench really needed to come through, with Utah’s starters logging extra minutes in back-to-back overtime games.
Plus: Does Eric Gordon provide a lesson for Mike Conley and the Jazz? ( ...
The second night of a back-to-back after two overtime games, playing against one of the worst teams in the NBA, would seem to be a logical point in the season for him to sit. In the end, I think it’s just hard to trade one-directional veterans on big contracts, even if they are terrific shooters. On the other side of the court was another 15-year veteran. [Eric Gordon’s HoopsHype rumors page](https://hoopshype.com/player/eric-gordon/) for a compendium of Gordon rumors — there are many. On the other hand, playing him may also increase his trade value some? In general, the Jazz have thrived on that chaos this season, but that’s always going to be a fine line. Tonight, though, he got a chance in the fourth quarter, thanks to some foul trouble by other Jazz players and the small lineups the Rockets were putting out there. He’s now a low-scoring presence this season, but he has reliably racked up assists in this offense, averaging just under nine per game. However, he did have four fouls in his limited time on the court. Obviously, the first mark of this was their turnovers, 20 in the game in total. Still, it was an encouraging first real NBA stint for Fontecchio, having finished with 13 points in such a short stint. There aren’t a ton of NBA rookies at that height who are confident in getting on the move, hopping into a gather, and shooting the ball like that.

"Somebody cautioned me before the season: If this [Utah Jazz] team gets off to a good start, don't be surprised if they hang on to some of these veterans for awhile. If this team gets off to a good start, don’t be surprised if they hang on to some of these veterans for awhile,” Shelburne said. Now at 3-0, the Jazz are now just one out of four teams in the entire league that have yet to taste defeat this year.
