Colts promote Sam Ehlinger to starting quarterback, replacing Matt ... (The Indianapolis Star)

Colts coach Frank Reich says Sam Ehlinger is replacing Matt Ryan at quarterback. Ryan has a shoulder injury but that's not the reason for the change.

He’s going to make the decisions he thinks is best.” “You want to make sure you make this move that it is truly the best thing for the team, and you don’t want to rush into this kind of a judgement. “He’s committed to winning championships, and anything short of winning a championship isn’t going to be good enough. Is he going to make mistakes? … he’s got a lot of wisdom, a lot of good counsel,” Reich said. … He might lead in certain ways, but it’s really owner, GM, head coach talking through a decision of this magnitude.” “Certainly, his vote is always going to carry — it’s a one-man crew in that respect, but what I appreciate about him is this is a collective decision. But this is also a big step up for a player who opened the season as the team’s No. By making this move now, Indianapolis has effectively given up on Ryan, despite restructuring his contract in the offseason to guarantee most of the final two years of his contract, meaning it will cost Indianapolis $18 million in cap space to move on next season. 3 defenses, and in training camp, he took relatively few snaps, practicing sparingly as the Colts focused on Ryan as the starter and Nick Foles as the team’s backup. The look he’s given on scout team, the quality of his throws, the way he’s commanding himself out there has been the total package. “We did not hold up our end of the bargain,” Reich said.

The Indianapolis Colts suffered another ugly loss in Week 7 against the Tennessee Titans in which quarterback Matt Ryan struggled mightily on the day.

The intent behind this move is that Ehlinger will start the rest of the season for the Colts, so it doesn’t appear this is just a one game trial for the young quarterback. That’s quite a tall task for the inexperienced quarterback, but the Colts clearly believe he gives them the best shot at winning now, and it will be interesting to see how he performs throughout the rest of the season. Matt Ryan might have played the last game of his career. The Colts benched the former Falcons quarterback in favor of Sam Ehlinger.

The Falcons and Terry Fontenot came out ahead on this transaction, but it’s still sad to see for Matt Ryan. The veteran led the Colts to a 3-3-1 record with a pretty horrific offensive line. Before the season, it was thought that Ryan would be the missing piece to a Super Bowl-ready roster, but the experiment is over after just seven games. [Matt Ryan](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/R/RyanMa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-)‘s Colts career could be over. Colts veteran quarterback Matt Ryan isn't having the season that many expected, having arguably shown his age so far.

Likewise, Ryan has largely refrained from challenging opposing defenses downfield—which has allowed defenses to force the Colts to take short completions underneath, limiting their ability to have big plays deep and sustain long scoring drives, behind an offensive line that no longer blocks well in either facet offensively. It’s not the best receiving corps, but big wideouts like Pittman Jr. Quite frankly, it’s more plays for the unit to get soundly beat in the trenches or make mistakes. However, some of Ryan’s throws on interceptions have been downright bonehead—and cannot always be blamed on the offensive line’s problems in pass protection. Ryan leads the league with 11 fumbles and 9 interceptions and has been highly turnover prone for Indianapolis so far this season. Ryan shoulders a lot of the blame.

Colts' Salary Cap Implications to Move On From Veteran QB Matt ... (Stampede Blue)

The salary cap situation regarding Matt Ryan isn't encouraging next offseason—unless the veteran quarterback retires.

Something that’s not completely out of the realm of possibility given that Ryan would likely be competing and not handed a starting job in 2023—for any NFL team. In fact, Ryan might even be relegated to a top veteran backup quarterback option at this late stage of his playing career—meaning the options to extend his football days may not be all that abundant or optimistic. It’s going to be a significant salary cap hit for the Colts unless Ryan elects to retire all together with his wife and two small children.

What the Colts brass has said about the 37-year-old quarterback from the time he was acquired to the time he was benched:

A 34-27 win over the Jaguars featured more Ryan heroics — this time, it was a game-sealing touchdown pass to Alec Pierce in the closing seconds — and looked like it might serve as a turning point. “There are other guys (who can do that too), but (Ryan) is unflappable.” A similar up-tempo strategy employed for the second straight week, but the results were disastrous. “You sense a confidence from the team, and I think that’s where we feel right now with Matt as our quarterback. He threw for 352 yards in the team’s season-opening tie against Houston, rallying the team from a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter. The team rallied for an upset win over Kansas City the next week, where Ryan threw two touchdown passes and no interceptions, albeit while being sacked five more times. Reich called Ryan “a model of consistency, but also a model of consistency at a very high level. You’re on this hamster wheel.” But he hoped Ryan would be the solution to the problem. The team was shut out by Jacksonville the next week, when Ryan threw three interceptions and was sacked five times. The Matt Ryan era in Indianapolis was short and anything but sweet. "Talking to Matt was a lot like talking to Phillip (Rivers). Getting Ryan was no sure thing when the Colts moved on from Carson Wentz.

No, stats never do but based on this measure, plus the eye test, and it’s not hard to see Ryan’s lost a bit on his fastball at the age of 37. Only that hasn’t been the case since touching down in Indianapolis. Still, we’ve seen Ryan do more with less in the past. Colts bench injured QB Matt Ryan in favor of Sam Ehlinger (The Seattle Times)

The Indianapolis Colts are benching starting quarterback Matt Ryan and will start Sam Ehlinger in Sunday's game against the Washington Commanders.

Reich said he told the quarterbacks and their teammates Monday and that Ryan responded like a pro, promising to help the Colts. “I told this to Matt, ‘We did not hold up our end of the bargain here. “Right now, the move is for Sam to be the starter the rest of the season,” Reich said. We feel this is the best decision for our team.” “We haven’t discussed a package this week, so I don’t know what the plan for that is,” Ehlinger said last Wednesday. The move comes one day after a 19-10 loss at Tennessee left Indy 1 1/2 games behind the Titans in the AFC South. I mean, you came here and we promised you one of the top NFL rushing games and we promised you great protection, and we haven’t really, as an offense, delivered on that, and that starts with me,’” Reich said. 3 job and wound up appearing in three games though Ehlinger did not throw a pass. Why the Colts benched Matt Ryan, and what's next (ESPN)

Ryan's turnovers and lack of mobility were vulnerabilities behind a struggling offensive line, and the Colts are now turning to the unproven Sam Ehlinger.

First, the Colts have been intrigued by Ehlinger since his arrival but have yet to learn about him in the context of the regular season. At some point, the offense would need to produce more for the Colts to remain viable. The Colts would be wise to take advantage of it by moving the pocket or running bootlegs that set him up to throw or run. But Ehlinger will need to mostly operate from the pocket as defenses start to account for his mobility. He also is due a $7.5 million roster bonus in March, giving the Colts something of a deadline by which to decide his future. A quarterback change isn't likely to be a magic fix, but the Colts were fresh out of cards to play. [Quenton Nelson](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3129308/quenton-nelson) and [Ryan Kelly](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/2578475/ryan-kelly) have been surprising, the Colts also took a passive approach to filling key spots at left tackle and right guard. It's taken remarkable defensive efforts for the Colts to eke out their three wins. But his promotion to the starter is a much different proposition. The Colts restructured Ryan's contract after trading for him. Will this prove to be the final scene of Ryan's career? Reich said the move would have been made regardless of the injury.

The Colts Are Once Again Moving on From Their Latest Quarterback (Sports Illustrated)

Since Andrew Luck retired, Indianapolis has gone through Jacoby Brissett, Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan. Next up: Sam Ehlinger.

At some point, they were destined to arrive at a place where their desire to continually boost a competitive roster met the limited basin of resources at their disposal. Perhaps we can chalk it up to the end of blind fortunes. The Colts have now dealt two third-round picks and a first-round pick for Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan, neither of whom will make it to a second season in Indianapolis (we assume). They could have made a more aggressive push to sign Tom Brady when Brady was available, instead of Philip Rivers, though one would imagine Brady wasn’t thrilled with the idea of boosting a club that ratted on him during Deflategate (Brady also knew Josh McDaniels well, and was certainly privy to the reasons why McDaniels bailed on the Colts at the last minute). Also saying Brady was, at the time, a markedly better option than Rivers was a bit of revisionist history. When fires start, they often seem to require a double-take in order for the brain to fully comprehend a sense of emergency.

Why was Matt Ryan benched? Inside Colts' decision to start Sam ... (The Athletic)

This wasn't what Indy's brain trust envisioned when they acquired the veteran QB, but they decided a change was needed.

He got a vote of confidence Monday from one of the stalwarts of the Colts defense. Roughly $12 million of the $29 million he’s due in 2023 is guaranteed, and there is a $7.5 million roster bonus that kicks in March 17. This is, ‘Let’s talk this through.’ He might lead the way in certain ways, but it’s really owner, GM, head coach talking through a decision of this magnitude.” “You want to make sure you make this move that it is truly the best thing for the team and you don’t want to rush into this kind of a judgment. Reich and Irsay typically speak in the locker room after each game, but meetings like the one Sunday night are extremely rare. “This is another point that needs to be made crystal clear, and I told this to Matt,” Reich said. It’s worth noting that the Colts always saw Ryan as at least a two-year answer, and Monday’s decision puts that in peril. But the upside is higher, and Ehlinger’s scrambling ability might prove to be a spark this offense desperately needs. The Colts weren’t just unproductive — a 16.1 points-per-game average, 29th in the league — they were predictable. And publicly, Reich billed Ehlinger’s promotion to the backup job 10 days ago as nothing more than a schematic move, something that would give the offense another weapon in short-yardage situations. No, they didn’t rush into this, because this call was weeks in the making. The fumbles were a problem, his interceptions were costing them games and his leash was getting shorter.
