Austin FC defeats FC Dallas in playoffs: Five observations from ... (Austin American-Statesman)

Austin FC's two first-half goals set the tone in the team's first win over FC Dallas in the Western Conference semifinals.

Continuing a dream second year for the club, Austin FC will head on the road to play Los Angeles FC on Oct. At times he’s single-handedly willed Austin FC to victory this year. But given the opportunity, the team will want to take advantage of a chance to play in the MLS Cup, which few teams achieve. If you want to nitpick, the squad might have been a little too conservative with the lead and had too much of a defensive mindset in the second half — when Velasco had his goal in the 65th minute to bring Dallas within 2-1. Austin FC played about as well as a team can in the first half. Austin FC picked the right time to record its first win over FC Dallas — and as a result, it’s off to the Western Conference final.

The squad goes to L.A. for a spot in the finals.

But Austin FC righted the ship shortly after, even creating a couple of high-quality chances that required good saves from Paes to deny a third Austin goal. In the 65th minute, Velasco combined with substitute Franco Jara to cut up the ATX back line and beat Stuver from close range. In the 26th minute, a Diego Fagundez corner kick somehow found a way through a dozen bodies in the penalty box before landing at the feet of Djitté, who calmly and alertly lifted the ball into the top corner for the opening goal. They had to go around us and they just didn’t have an answer there in the first half.” “Credit Josh and the rest of the coaching staff for making those defensive tweaks,” goalkeeper Brad Stuver said. Despite going with an attack-oriented starting lineup that included Djitté at striker and Dani Pereira in midfield, the ATX coach organized his squad in a defensive posture for the majority of the match, defending in a solid 4-4-2 shape that effectively neutralized the Dallas front three of difference-makers Jesús Ferreira, Alan Velasco, and Paul Arriola.

The Western Conference final on Sunday between LAFC and Austin FC is going to be a good one. Then you have two of the best designated players in Carlos Vela and Driussi. Austin checked all the boxes in that they had their best attacker raise his came, they had a central midfielder who did the dirty work, and they got great goalkeeping. The Finish international both was huge in breaking up plays defensively and getting the ball into the attack to constantly put Dallas under pressure. These are the biggest areas needed in postseason games and Austin got it all. This is why players like Sebastian Giovinco, Nicolas Lodeiro, Josef Martinez and Taty Castellanos have been the most successful players in the league. The game was played on Sunday in front of a raucous capacity crowd at Q2 Stadium and it was a big opportunity for both teams to prove they are heading in a positive direction. The way the team fought back into the game was impressive. Just as they started to grow into the game, Dallas poorly defended an Austin corner kick and Moussa Djitté slammed home the game’s opening goal. The game completely changed when Dallas poorly defended the corner kick. Alan Velasco pulled FC Dallas back within one in the 65th minute when he fired home a poorly defended play from close range. In this game, FC Dallas did fine in this regard.

However, Lloyd-Hughes said there is no evidence that Austin FC’s ownership team founded the team with any concrete plans to bring on a women’s team in the future. There are precedents for an ownership group starting a men’s team and then a women’s team in the same city in quick succession. The group has been the most vocal in its interest in a 2024 expansion spot, though Lloyd-Hughes said the league might look elsewhere since the last two expansion teams were added in California. “As a club, we’re big supporters of the women’s game,” said an Austin FC Spokesperson.
