It's another Premier League top-four litmus test when Tottenham Hotspur welcomes Newcastle United to North London on Sunday.

Chelsea have gone to a back 4 with the trio of Kovacic, Jorginho and Loftus-Cheek in midfield. As for Manchester United, yet another Cristiano Ronaldo saga has dominated the last few days as he walked off early against Tottenham after being an unused sub and will not be in the squad to face Chelsea. Chelsea head to RB Salzburg on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League and then head to Brighton on Saturday, Oct. Chelsea signed him in the summer and he’s been on loan back at Chicago Fire. The ball just hasn’t dropped to Raheem Sterling in the right areas on a few occasions. Casemiro and Eriksen class gives United sturdy foundation: The experienced duo of Eriksen and Casemiro got United off to a fine start as they ticked things over nicely in midfield and gave United a foundation to get something from the game. Rashford, Aubameyang struggle: The forwards on both teams struggled to have an impact and perhaps both Chelsea and Manchester United will be better without a true No. Manchester United host Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday and then host West Ham on Sunday, Oct. United and Chelsea both tried to leave as many forward players forward as possible and it turned the game into a bit of a stalemate. United dominated midfield early on and got the ball to Sancho, Bruno Fernandes and Antony often and Chelsea couldn’t get going. Potter’s decision to bring on Kovacic after 35 minutes gave Chelsea the control they wanted as they switched to a back four and went to a 4-2-3-1. The back four and two holding midfielders are settled, while Fabio Vieira looks likely to start in an attacking role.

All stars aligned for Newcastle on Saturday as Liverpool lost to Nottingham Forest (?) while Chelsea and Man. Utd. drew their game thus making it possible ...

- The last (and only) open place is up for grabs once more although it has not felt like that with Eddie Howe calling the shots. Wilson is still playing for a place on the plane to Qatar, so the commitment and willingness, and effort will be there. - The vibes around Callum Wilson are not so firey, but there are no more options because of the stupid injuries and flesh and cartilage and bone not being made of steel in the human body if you know what I’m saying. It’s Nick Pope all day every day and judging by what went down a fortnight ago that should also be the case in the Three Lions XI—dropping the nugget just in case Southy is reading this. The game against Liverpool is the only one (undeservedly) marking a breakpoint in Newcastle’s season to date as that’s the only loss this team has suffered all year long. Last year wasn’t a good one in the books of Newcastle when it came to adding the entries pertaining to matches against Tottenham. What better than to celebrate with a goal, an assist, and a victory in London? - Joelinton has picked up an injury and should be out of today’s starting XI and most probably the full game, which simply sucks. That’d be sublime and keep the team in the top places without regard for other teams’ results. drew their game thus making it possible for the Magpies to jump ahead of the two Big Six clubs later today with a victory over Tottenham. Even better, the models have Newcastle with the third-best xGD among Premier League teams (+8.3) only behind Arsenal and Man. but only five teams have more goals scored than Newcastle’s 18 and just three of those teams are currently sitting above Newcastle on the table.

Tottenham v Newcastle: Premier League – live (The Guardian)

Will Tottenham get back to winning ways when they welcome Newcastle to north London this afternoon? Join Daniel Harris to find out.

Pretty much every time Spurs have faced decent opposition this season, they’ve been outplayed – by Chelsea, though they sneaked a draw at the end, by Arsenal and by Manchester United – and in general, play a reactive style that’s hard to watch in and of itself, never mind when you peruse the talent available to make that not so. Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison are decent players just as Djed Spence is a decent prospect, but even at the time, it looked like more than £100m spent turning a team able to contest the Champions League places but no more into a team still able to contest the Champions League places but no more. Football – and modern life – and the human psyche – love a crisis. It’s very hard not to watch the teams who’ve beaten Spurs this season and think hmm, managers on the way up and at the cutting edge, versus a manager past his best, from whom the game is getting away. He squares to Skipp who pokes one more to Son, and Son dips inside his man then lands a curler onto the roof of the net. 14 min The question, of course, is how you do that – does a midfielder stick on him or does a centre-back go with him. But Royal does brilliantly to stay close without giving away a foul, so that when Big Joe, as Steve Bruce knew him, swings back his leg to shoot, he boots Royal, the two fall together, and the upshot is a corner – which comes to nowt. 17 min This is a decent game, both teams looking to get the ball forward. 23 min Skipp breaks ahead of play and Bentancur, out on the right, turns to slide him a decent pass down the line. 20 min Dier takes the ball and goes short, gets ball a pass he doesn’t want and, looking for Lloris, instead punches past the far post. The ball then moves over to Sessegnon, who drags a shot that earns a corner via two defelections, Spurs’ first of the game … He misses and wears a little kick from Lenglet, one of those that outside the box might be a foul but inside it, isn’t one you’d feel comfy awarding a penalty for.

The big reason for Newcastle’s standing is from the club’s six draws thus far, the most for any club in the Premier League. The Spurs suffered a setback this past Wednesday, when they fell 2-0 to Manchester United in their trip to Old Trafford. Coming into the weekend, the Spurs were tied for second in the tables with the two-time defending champions, Manchester City, four points back of the Gunners. Miguel Almirón puts Newcastle into top four after hard-fought win at ... (The Guardian)

Harry Kane reduced the deficit but first-half strikes from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almirón were enough to give Newcastle a 2-1 win at Tottenham.

“We have to finish this period of games and then in January we’ll see where we are.” “I had every right to go for the ball,” Wilson said, with just cause. A lengthy VAR delay and a skirmish in which Rodrigo Bentancur went close to losing his head did not rule out the goal. These are early days but Yves Bissouma’s best performance at the Tottenham stadium in 2022 remains as a Brighton player in his former team’s 1-0 April win.Newcastle may have the best goals‑against record in the division but they had not come to defend. Draws with the Manchester clubs, being unlucky losers at Liverpool and this result suggest a team here to stay. With winnable fixtures against Aston Villa and Southampton before a pre-World Cup showdown with Chelsea, Newcastle can be solidly in the Champions League shakeup when they head off for that Saudi winter training camp taken for “football reasons”.

Tottenham 1-2 Newcastle: Individual errors cost Spurs again (Cartilage Free Captain)

There were also Antonio Conte's typical 3 changes at LCB and the wingback positions, with Emerson Royal returning from suspension, Clement Lenglet in for Ben ...

First goal aside, his poor clearance led to the second goal, and his poor passing was a continual source of turnovers for Newcastle. Perisic had a chance soon after as Harry Kane found him wide in the box but his shot was scuffed and straight at Pope. Tottenham looked to strike back, and finally had the breakthrough from a Son corner kick: Clement Lenglet’s flicked-on header found Harry Kane at the far post who duly headed the ball home. I’d have to watch the tape back to see what the tweak was, but interestingly a similar thing happened against Manchester United. He knocked the ball down to Miguel Almiron, who easily shrugged off Ryan Sessegnon before making Clement Lenglet look like a statue as he burst past him into the box and knocked the ball past Lloris at a tight angle to double Newcastle’s lead. Conte’s first sub was to bring on Ivan Perisic for Sessegnon, who had a very rough night and was on a yellow, soon followed by bringing on Lucas Moura for Skipp (also on a yellow). It looked a clear foul and the Spurs players were incredulous, but neither the referee nor VAR intervened, and Newcastle took the lead. Harry Kane then went from provider to creating his own chance as he drove forward into the box and took a good shot on his left; Pope saved once more, stretching a leg out to knock it away. On replay, it looked as if the Brazilian defender had handled the ball, but VAR once again decided not to intervene, this time to Tottenham’s benefit. Sonny continued to look bright, and was played in behind by a beautiful Kane through-ball to be one on one with Nick Pope for a massive opportunity. Spurs looked to win the ball in midfield and break forward quickly, before Joelinton got in behind the Spurs defence for a huge chance.
