In the Returns of Tua Tagovailoa and Brian Flores, the Dolphins ... (The New York Times)

The N.F.L. has been bedeviled by its attempts to better evaluate players for concussions and to hire diverse head coaches. In the Dolphins' win over the ...

Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin said last week in a news conference that he did not feel the game carried more significance because of Flores’s return. As a defensive lineman slung him to the ground in the second quarter of that game, Tagovailoa had the back of his head smash against the field, and his fingers contorted into a “fencing” response that can be a sign of a brain injury. In his filing, Flores also alleged that Ross had violated league rules by recruiting quarterback Tom Brady and Coach Sean Payton, and that Ross had pressured Flores to intentionally lose games to net a higher draft pick. The league said it found no evidence of “tanking” after concluding an investigation in August, but Ross was fined $1.5 million and suspended 11 weeks for violating the league’s tampering policy for his contact with Brady and Payton. But Pickett threw a pass toward the end zone that was intercepted by Noah Igbinoghene with 25 seconds left, effectively ending the game. With the Dolphins leading, 16-10, with three minutes remaining in the game, Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett fired a pass to Diontae Johnson from the Dolphins’ 30-yard line. He started strong — completing five of six passes for 60 yards on the first drive, ending with a 8-yard touchdown pass to Raheem Mostert to put Miami ahead, 7-0. “For me, I’m all for player safety, but when I hear guys saying, ‘That’s the Tua Rule,’ or ‘This is a rule because of Tua,’ I don’t want to be known as that,” Tagovailoa said. Tagovailoa said last week that he remembered much of that night until the injury, which caused him to go unconscious. 29 against the Bengals](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/29/sports/football/tua-tagovailoa-head-injury.html), an injury that altered the entire N.F.L. Dolphins-Steelers Week 7 Complete Observations (DolphinMaven)

-- Along with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, tackle Terron Armstead returned to the lineup after missing the Week 6 game against the Minnesota Vikings because of ...

-- The Dolphins went three-and-out again the next time they had the ball, the drive ending with Tua coming up 1 yard short on a third-and-8 scramble where for the second time in the game he took on the defender instead of sliding. -- With Mostert on the sideline, the Dolphins hand off to Chase Edmonds on third-and-2 from the Steelers 13 and he's stuffed for a 1-yard loss. -- There's a reason the Steelers don't throw the ball downfield very often, and it shows up here as Holland reads Pickett and jumps his pass inside the Dolphins 20 to make the pick. Pickett explains after the game there was a mix-up in that he thought Diontae Johnson would move back toward him in the end zone, which made it look like a pass intended for Igbinoghene, who deserves props for his ability to get both feet down before his momentum carries him out of bounds. Still, with the Steelers getting the ball back with 2:31 left, this is a failure by the offense. The Steelers are facing a third-and-1 when they have Pickett run a sneak, but they get flagged for an illegal shift. -- The Dolphins' next drive ended after only one first down due to a combination of miscues. Chris Boswell ended the drive with a 45-yard field goal to cut the Dolphins lead to 13-3. On fourth-and-3 from the 14, McDaniel bypasses a chip-shot field goal attempt and has Tua hand off to Edmonds again, and he's again stuff, turning the ball over on downs. -- The Dolphins then got the benefit of a bad punt from the Steelers' Pressley Harvin III, but lost some of the great field position when Elijah Campbell was flagged for holding. -- The defense finally got a turnover, its first in four games on Pittsburgh's next drive when Justin Bethel took advantage of intended receiver Chase Claypool falling to make an easy pick downfield. -- Tua committed a big no-no when he scrambled after a naked bootleg and lowered his shoulder to take on a Steelers defender instead of just sliding.

The Good, Bad & Ugly from the Miami Dolphins' week seven victory ... (The Phinsider)

On a night when the 1972 Miami Dolphins - the National Football League's only undefeated team to win the Super Bowl - were being honored for fifty years of ...

Will Tua Tagovailoa be able to knock off the final remnants of rust in practice this week in order to turn in a stellar performance against the Lions next Sunday? Secondly, McDaniel’s decision to go for it on 4th and 3 deep into Steelers’ territory, up by six points, instead of kicking a field goal which would have given the Dolphins a two-score lead on a night when Miami’s defense was playing lights-out ball, was flat out just the wrong call. Well, Coach, having faith in your players is great, but not to the potential detriment of the final score. For one, he needs to get the playcalls in sooner. In addition to the Igbinoghene pick, special teams ace, Justin Bethel, came away with an interception on a play where Diontae Johnson stumbled while the Kenny Pickett pass was in the air. Defensive backs, Kader Kohou and Keion Crossen, were ruled out of the contest just prior to kickoff.

Jevon Holland celebrates 4th-quarter interception but just as happy ... (Palm Beach Post)

McKinley entered the game when starting safety Brandon Jones went down with a knee injury in the third quarter.

“He’s a great player,” said cornerback Justin Bethel, who had the first of the Dolphins’ three interceptions off Pickett. “I’ve been working for this for a minute, so this was amazing,” said McKinley, who was elevated to the active roster for the opener against the Patriots but did not play. “When technique meets opportunity, splash plays happen, and that is what it was,” Holland said of his interception. “I just hope my mom and dad saw that one. That created an opportunity for the undrafted free agent who joined the team in May to see his first pro action. “Thank you for asking me about him,” Holland said.

From the Press Room: Steelers at Dolphins (Steelers.com)

Coach Mike Tomlin and linebacker Myles Jack talk about the loss to the Dolphins.

"I feel like we are, but we didn't make the necessary splash plays today to secure victory," said Tomlin. "That's definitely something that we as a defense we definitely could help the turnover ratio," said Jack. "We gave them the ball first and they went down and scored, but there was a lot of ball left. "I thought he was highly competitive," said Tomlin. I see a lot of positive things from our defense. "We have some interception opportunities," said Tomlin. "The Dolphins caught theirs and we didn't catch ours. I didn't feel like it was out of control at any juncture, to be quite honest with you." The Steelers got into a hole early, down 13-0 at the end of the first quarter. We didn't give our offense the short field by producing the turnover and they did, and so go back to work. And that's just kind of the lens in which I see it. They made the necessary plays to secure victory man and really, we didn't.

Dolphins-Steelers: The Five Biggest Plays (Sports Illustrated)

In explaining why it looked like the pass was intended for Igbinoghene instead of wide receiver Diontae Johnson, rookie QB Kenny Pickett explained after the ...

The 32-yard completion from Tua to Trent Sherfield to start off the drive was a huge play, without question, but Sanders never would have had the chance to kick the field goal had Sutton, who has two interceptions on the season, not dropped what should have been an easy pick when he turned around in front of Tyreek Hill and had the ball come right to him. Pickett appeared to pick up the first down, but the play was nullified by the illegal shift penalty that made it third-and-6 from the 20, and then it became third-and-16 from the 30 following a holding penalty. While the defense clearly won this game for the Dolphins, we'd be remiss not to mention the opening drive, which ended with Miami's only touchdown. This should have been the game-clincher and it highlighted Holland's great instincts and ball skills. 2 on this list, but that play was set up by the key penalty that completely changed the outlook of the Steelers' next-to-last drive. Regardless, it was a great effort by Noah to get both feet down before he fell out of bounds.

Playing without numerous defensive backs coordinator Josh Boyer came up with a terrific game plan to lead the way to the win. It's a win but the offense and Tua will need to be much sharper moving forward. It looked like it might be a Dolphins blowout as the offense was dominant to start and had chances early on.

The Steelers offense had 11 possessions in the game, with four of those ending in three-and-outs, and another ending in a two-and-out because of Pickett's first interception. The Steelers continue to ignore the middle of the field when throwing the football, and they continue to throw short of the sticks on possession downs – there actually was a 1-yard pass on a third-and-3. That made it third-and-16 from the 30-yard line, and Pickett threw an interception when attempting a short pass to Diontae Johnson. Pickett threw three interceptions and Tagovailoa threw none, and as a result the Steelers were minus-3 in turnover ratio, while the Dolphins were plus-3 in turnover ratio. Had the Steelers gotten a similarly representative effort from their offense, they likely would have left South Florida with a two-game winning streak and a 3-4 record. Or maybe a better way to describe the difference in the game was that the Steelers secondary dropped four potential interceptions, while Miami's patchwork secondary caught them all.

NBC Rules Expert Believes Kenny Pickett's First INT Against ... (Steelers Depot)

It ended up being a forgettable night for Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett against the Miami Dolphins in primetime on Sunday Night.

It’s hard to hear McAulay believe it should have been pass interference though, considering it was a splash play in favor of the Dolphins and gave Miami a short field with a 7-0 lead already. You can see Claypool get tangled up with Bethel, allowing the veteran cornerback to make a play on the football for the easy interception. But if he’s not playing the ball, as we see here, and their feet entangle, it is a foul,” McAulay stated, according to the broadcast.

Steelers' lack of splash afflicts offense, defense in loss to Dolphins (TribLIVE)

No sacks. No interceptions. For all of the good the Pittsburgh Steelers defense did over the final three quarters of a 16-10 loss Sunday night to the Miami ...

At the end of the first quarter, the Steelers had 35 yards, one first down and zero points. “I think it’s too late in the season to be close to anything. In the third quarter, the offense generated 48 yards, two first downs and no points. It also marked the third time in six games that the Steelers failed to get a sack in a game. By that time, Tagovailoa had staked the Dolphins to a 13-0 lead. They permitted 207 the rest of the way, including 126 yards and four first downs after halftime. “We didn’t make enough splash plays on both sides of the ball to win that game,” defensive captain Cameron Heyward said. We had to make adjustments to what they were doing.” This time, the Steelers had Minkah Fitzpatrick, Wallace and Sutton back from injury. And the Dolphins sealed the win with 18 seconds left when Noah Igbinoghene intercepted Pickett in the end zone. In the second quarter, when receiver Chase Claypool got tangled on a deep route, cornerback Justin Bethel was there to make the interception. His words also pertained to the absence of turnovers.
