Three keys to a Seahawks upset over the Chargers (Field Gulls)

To his credit, the former USFL kicker has yet to miss on the season, [but all of his non-XP field goals have come from within 30-yards](https://premium.pff.com/nfl/players/2022/REG/taylor-bertolet/11182/kicking). At this point, I think it is fair to say that nobody is sleeping on the Seahawks’ offense anymore, and their fortunes in 2022 seem to reside almost entirely in their ability to prove that last week’s defensive performance is a sign of things to come and not simply a one-game aberration. In fact, with the exception of Corey Linsley, [every current starter on this offensive line](https://premium.pff.com/nfl/teams/2022/REGPO/los-angeles-chargers/offense-pass-blocking) has had at least 5 pressures in a game this season, and the team has surrendered a total of 80 pressures on the season. Sure, it isn’t all bad news for LA, as [Corey Linsley is expected to return from food poisoning this week](https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/football/news/chargers-corey-linsley-cleared-to-play/), but even the veteran center can’t single-handedly fix their pass blocking woes... [The Seahawks, for comparison, are starting rookie bookend tackles and have only allowed 69](https://premium.pff.com/nfl/teams/2022/REGPO/seattle-seahawks/offense-pass-blocking). On the next snap, Kenneth Walker III put this one on ice. Seattle still forced a turnover on downs after Herbert’s pass to Mike Williams was short of the marker on 4th and 14. Williams’ leg twisted awkwardly and was injured on the play, adding to a day of carnage at SoFi Stadium. Better field position meant a shorter drive for the Seahawks, who got a grown man 12-yard run by Kenneth Walker and a pass interference on Derwin James. After a clutch 3rd down pass breakup by Quandre Diggs on former Seahawks TE Gerald Everett, the punt by JK Scott backed Seattle up at their own 2-yard line. When Seattle got the ball back, Geno went to work and engineered a 7-play, 73-yard beaut that ended in another TD to Marquise Goodwin. He also took a shot to the head from Khalil Mack in the scramble. Overhanging on that series was news that DK Metcalf was ruled out for the game after being carted off with a knee injury. Two plays prior, DK Metcalf suffered a knee injury on a pass intended for him along the sidelines, and he was carted off. Geno Smith converted two 3rd down passes to Marquise Goodwin, of which the latter was a 3rd and 15 touchdown! Herbert marched the team 75 yards in 11 plays and capped it off with a touchdown pass to Austin Ekeler. On the very first play of the ensuing Seattle drive, rookie running back Kenneth Walker raced around the right end and sprinted 74 yards to the end zone. Unfortunately the Chargers followed that with a bad three-and-out and then the floodgates opened up once again. The Seahawks pushed their lead to 13 with 1:06 remaining in the quarter. The Seahawks were back on top by 10 with under two minutes remaining in the half. The Chargers finally go on the board with a seven-yard rushing score from Austin Ekeler. With seven and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Chargers trailed 7-0. The Chargers got the game started on a high note with a turnover on the opening drive just a few plays into regulation. The defense stepped up, however, and kept Seattle to just a field goal thanks in part to Austin Johnson’s first sack of the season. Both teams traded punts on the next two drives before the Seahawks found a groove. It took just four plays for tragedy to strike the Chargers again as Justin Herbert made a very ill-advised throw over the middle to a double-covered DeAndre Carter. Through the Chargers’ first three drives of the game, Justin Herbert and the offense turned the ball over three times while recording just two first downs.

Jackson gave up a 17-yarder at the start and then came back with a PI. Brandon Staley, woodshedded by Pete Carroll and his lesser roster, has a team that’s busted up and broken, not to mention poorly coached by him and his lieutenants. Jackson then was carted off with a leg injury after allowing a score. Austin Johnson had a sack to stop the drive Herbert’s fumble created. [Michael Davis](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/D/DaviMi03.htm) stands to see an increase in snaps. [Follow @PFRumors](https://twitter.com/PFRumors) The 4-3 outfit is still in the thick of the postseason picture, but the mounting injuries are obviously cause for alarm. Allen and Williams have yet to finish a game together in 2022. Initial reporting seems to suggest that Williams’ prognosis is not as worrisome as Jackson’s, though we are awaiting confirmation on that front. The Chargers authorized the Jackson deal for a reason, and losing him for an extended period of time would be a difficult pill to swallow. Even when he does return, it is not believed that he will perform at his usual elite level. Seahawks Move Into First Place After “Really Solid” Victory Over ... (Seahawks.com)

The Seahawks put together their most complete performance of the year to beat the Chargers and move into first place in the NFC West.

We've got a long ways to go and we've got to keep building. And with the defense making the improvements that is has the past two games, the first-place Seahawks feel like they've found a formula to win a lot more games this season. The Seahawks came into the game tied for first place with the 49ers and Rams, but San Francisco lost to Kansas City, while the Rams were on a bye. Yet with Geno Smith playing at a Pro-Bowl level, and with a rookie class contributing in huge ways, the Seahawks are proving a lot of people wrong. But it's only Week 7, so we've got a long ways to go, so we've got to go back to work and keep rolling." The way the Seahawks played well in all three phases against a strong opponent—the Chargers came into the game with a 4-2 record that had them in a tie for first place in their division—bodes well for the heading forward. "They can feel it, they can feel the defense, they can feel what they're doing and how they fit together. to 329 yards and a 5 for 15 third-down conversion rate while holding the dynamic Chargers offense to just 53 rushing yards on 15 carries. The Seahawks defense struggled over a three-game stretch that saw them lose to Atlanta and New Orleans and win in Detroit, then made a big turn in last week's 19-9 win over Arizona. The Seahawks also put together a solid outing on special teams that, while not perfect, did not include any of the disastrous plays that have plagued the unit in recent weeks. The guys were running and hitting the way we want to, it was a really physical game… INGLEWOOD—The Seahawks have won low-scoring game this season, beating the Broncos and Cardinals in games in which neither team scored 20 points.

Chargers vs Seahawks week 7 final score: LA suffers ugly loss at ... (Bolts from the Blue)

The LA Chargers' week 7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks was bad from top to bottom.

He does not look comfortable in the offense right now and does not look close to the same QB that won rookie of the year. If the Chargers want any hope of competing the rest of the season, some things are going to have to drastically change during this bye week. He looks gun shy and I’m starting to think it’s not just the lingering injury.

Jackson for the season to a non-contact knee injury that required an air cast and a cart ride to the locker room. SoFi Stadium is unlikely to change the playing surface soon, and I’m not suggesting every injury can be chalked up to the turf field, but it’s part of a larger, league-wide discourse about how unsafe turf is for the health of the players. Taylor’s downing of the punt at the 2 was the catalyst for Los Angeles’ safety that kept them in the game for a few minutes longer. If he timed a jump just a touch better, it looked like he could’ve gotten his other hand to the ball to make the play for an interception. Something was bound to break the wrong way for this rushing attack after looking improved against a series of terrible run defenses, but it’s a harrowing thought that losing Joshua Kelley brings that phase of the offense down to that extent. Seattle came into this game giving up 165.8 yards per game, second to last in the league, ahead of only Denver. Johnson has been one of the bright spots on defense this season as one of the more unheralded free agent signings of the offseason. It’s hard to say things are all on Herbert because of the injuries at wide receiver and on the offensive line, but we’ve talked about this one or two other times this season. A lot of attention was paid to the additions of JC Jackson, Khalil Mack, and Sebastian Joseph-Day, and rightfully so, but Johnson has been routinely ruining opposing runs up the middle this season. When you have a QB that’s in the upper echelon of talent like Herbert is, he needs to be able to elevate the team around him and grit out games like these. ASJ got off to a hot start, driving on a Geno Smith pass to Tyler Lockett that resulted in a tip-drill interception for Kenneth Murray. With the game still in the balance, Samuel made a diving play to break up a Smith 3rd down pass and force Seattle into a 50-yard field goal.

“I was running to the ball, trying to go over there. I seen it, like, I was the closest person to it. ALSO OF NOTE: With the Chargers’ struggling to protect Herbert, Ekeler has been targeted 28 times over the last two games. I thought that the penalties were the story of the first three drives. The Chargers failed to convert the turnover to points, however, when they were stopped on fourth and one from the Seattle 32-yard line. They came back to beat Cleveland and Denver after falling behind but couldn’t make it three in a row against Seattle. “I thought that we got off to a good start with the takeaway. The Chargers now have given up 13 plays of at least 35 yards. I have to do a better job coaching this group and bringing it together.” We just have to play a lot cleaner football. and roughing the passer on Jerry Tillery — that led to four more first downs. The Seahawks converted five of nine third downs and the Chargers committed four penalties — pass interference on Callahan, J.C.

5 Takeaways From Chargers' 37-23 Week 7 Loss to Seahawks (Sports Illustrated)

What are the main takeaways we learned from the Los Angeles Chargers' Week 7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks?

Allen was on a snap-count he said after the game, leading to him not playing in the second half. I think that is going to be something that I take a look at over the next two weeks before we play Atlanta, just getting the right combination of players out there, playing the right combination of play calls, because I think that there have been a lot of good moments from us, but our bad moments have been really bad. "But regardless of what the plan is, we still have to go out and execute it as players." But even with the game close in the first half with plenty of time left, there didn’t appear to be a large emphasis on establishing a run game to build off of. The Chargers allowed 214 rushing yards to the Seahawks, the most they've given up in a single game this season. We have to make sure that that doesn’t happen because it’s preventing us from being the defense that we’re capable of being.” “We can continue to try and execute, get the ball moving early in the first quarter," Herbert said on avoiding early deficits. I seen it, like, I was the closest person to it. “I was running to the ball, trying to go over there. We started off the game, defensively, with a big takeaway, and then we turned the ball over on downs on a third-and-fourth-and-short." After being down 17-0 at one point, the Chargers had cut into the deficit to pull within three points, but that was the closest they'd get in overcoming the Seahawks' lead. But on the Seahawks' next three series, they finished drives that ended in two touchdowns and one field goal.

"We can continue to try and execute, get the ball moving early in the first quarter. Unfortunately, we didn't execute the way that we wanted to today. We have to use this bye week to get rested and to make sure that we play a lot more consistent football in the second half of the season." You can't turn the ball over like that in the NFL." We have to play within the rhythm and timing of the play. I think that that is going to be something that I take a look at over the next two weeks before we play Atlanta, just getting the right combination of players out there, playing the right combination of play calls, because I think that there have been a lot of good moments from us, but our bad moments have been really bad.
