After as disappointing of an end to a season that one could fathom in the desert, the Phoenix Suns will begin their march to get over the hump this season ...
Simply put, the best-case scenario for Portland when it comes to covering the spread will be for Lillard to have a breakout game and inflict damage upon the Suns with a hot-shooting hand. Not to mention, the Blazers would love to continue to get newly acquired forward Jerami Grant the basketball in space and in transition. Despite playing a little extra belligerently out on the court, the one area where this paid off was in the paint where Phoenix absolutely dominated the Mavs. However, Phoenix showcased their poise and resilience by simply answering the chaos that the Mavs ensued by outscoring Dallas 62-43 in the second half en route to sending the Suns fans home happy. With a solid road outing that resulted in the victory over the Kings 115-108, Portland is eager to prove that they are one of the league’s most improved teams heading into the season. Fresh off of getting a taste of revenge in a 107-105 win at the hands of the Mavericks to move to 1-0, the Suns will look for a repeat performance tonight against Portland.
The Blazers host Phoenix, which finished last season with the best record in the NBA (64-18).

The Blazers will need Dame to be back to the player Portland fans have come to know and love over the past ten years as he looks to shake off the rust early in this season. The Suns beat the Mavericks in their first game this season on the back of Devin Booker’s 28 point outing. Lillard made just one of eight attempts from three and shot five of eighteen for the game overall. Chris Paul struggled from the field in his first game back, making just one of his six shot attempts. Chris Paul, Phoenix Suns: Deservedly, teammate Devin Booker receives most of the accolades, but we too often underestimate Paul’s significant contribution to the team’s overall cohesion. Point Book back?: Devin Booker is a much better playmaker than when Igor Kokoskov had him running the show in that disastrous 2018-19 season. The eighth-year pro turns 26 on Oct. However, despite all the excitement from the rest of the roster, all eyes were on the return of Damian Lillard in his first regular season game since January. The Suns won three of four matchups against the Blazers last season, with the Blazers’ lone win coming in a 134-105 blowout very early into last season. Shaedon Sharpe also looked promising in the minutes he received, adding 12 points in just 16 minutes including making all three of his attempts from beyond the arc. The ESPN analyst gushes about the Blazers first game.
I watched their first game and I was like, look I don’t know what their record is going to be but I can see the vision, because Simons is super dynamic and can lead the bench when Dame is out and then they have all these big long wings. And when you play Dame, a center and then in between you have three of Josh Hart, whose just one on four and somehow succeeds every single time at doing it, Jerami Grant, Justise Winslow, Nassir Little, GPII didn’t even play in the first game and the Sharpe kid is going to be a rollercoaster ride that I’m buying the ticket for every single night. And really by blah I wasn’t talking stylistically, I was just saying it looks like a 500 team to me.

Jock Landale's missed putback prevented a second overtime as the Phoenix Suns fell short in a 113-111 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers at Moda Center.
When Paul nailed a patented jumper with 1:40 to play, the Suns were in the box seat with a five-point lead. The team statistics reflected similarly to the Mavericks game, with each team shooting similar percentages, though Phoenix had 12 more field-goal attempts and the Trail Blazers 15 more free-throws. That was snuffed out quickly by a Damion Lee three and an Ayton dunk, before a Booker jumpshot and driving layup gave the Suns a 99-97 lead with 90 seconds to play. He then provided Mikal Bridges with the same opportunity at the line, but the Suns wing converted on only one to leave the game tied. That included a straight away three, much to the surprise of those in the building and others watching on at home. It was a game of missed opportunities for the Suns who had earlier led by double-digits during the second quarter.

There, the Suns were up by five at one point in the overtime period before Portland went on a 7-0 run the final 1:29 left of OT. It took longer than the typical 48 minutes of regulation, but the Phoenix Suns have dropped their first game of the season in 113-11 fashion on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers.
After Lillard and Devin Booker failed to win it with big shots in regulation, the teams charged into overtime. Phoenix defended well in the extra period.
But that was the end of the fun for Portland. The Blazers threw a zone defense on the first possession of overtime. A Nurkic free throw off of a layup trimmed a point off the lead, then Phoenix turned over the ball with 1:12 remaining. Phoenix got the ball to Ayton, who got a shot and a foul over Hart, stuck guarding him on the left side. Then Ayton missed a close one in the lane. The Blazers took their first lead of the entire game with 10:27 remaining in the fourth. Getting the chance to run out became a major side effect of all that energy. This had the potential to be big for Portland, as the Phoenix pivot had been in the middle of half of their headaches. The offense was far more team-oriented and successful in the third period. The opening of the second half saw a couple developments for Portland that had been utterly missing before intermission. Portland was hoping to look one of the Western Conference bully teams in the eye and come out with their record unblemished. Anfernee Simons tried to make up the difference, giving Lillard a wingman.
Monty Williams shortened his rotation against the Portland Trail Blazers, relying heavily on Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton in the overtime loss.
Johnson wasn’t overly effective in his 22 and a half minutes, recording just five points on 2-for-9 from the floor and 1-for-6 from three-point range. If you can’t put him out there to put out a fire (e.g Lillard in this game), then he becomes fairly unusable and pointless in the rotation. Even in the game’s 113-111 conclusion, Phoenix’s Jock Landale had a chance to send it to a second overtime with a putback from Deandre Ayton’s deliberate missed free-throw.
Phoenix Suns dropped to 1-1 after Friday night's overtime loss at Portland in their first road game of the season.
Williams then started the second with Paul and Johnson along with Landale, Okogie and Lee. Williams has said the bench play will be by committee, but he had Johnson start the fourth with four reserves —Okogie, Payne, Landale and Lee. The Suns kept answering Portland’s runs, but could never put it away. [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) or contact him at 480-787-1240. If he ever does on a consistent basis, Ayton will become that All-Star and so much more. Williams was proud of the effort. He dropped 3 on Okogie to cap his explosive half. Lee once again made key plays. Then later took out Ayton for Landale. The Blazers were having guards defend him on switches. However, right quad cramps sidelined Johnson in the fourth of the opener and he played through a sore tailbone Friday from falling hard to the floor after taking a hit on a charge in the first half. Ayton battled fatigue that showed in him getting back late on defense, but then he came up with a big block on Lillard with the game tied at 97-97, a big steal late in regulation with the game knotted and a huge 3-point play to start OT.
