Here are the three biggest narratives to keep an eye on before, during and after the Bruins' game against the Ducks.
But falling short when the entire country's eyes are locked on you is not a great look, and it could lead to many dismissing UCLA moving forward as they have in the past. Kelly will have lifted a program stuck in mediocrity – admittedly sometimes at his own doing – back to its height, and maybe then people would start to think of him first and foremost as "Chip Kelly, UCLA head coach" before bringing up the Ducks, Eagles or 49ers. A win would cement them as a serious College Football Playoff contender, and it could set UCLA up for a 10-0 start given the quality of opponents they have coming up. Adding in his 231 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, he too is an elite dual-threat weapon who has yet to be slowed down so far this year. The last time UCLA beat a top-10 team on the road was at Texas in 2010, and that Longhorn team ended the year 5-7. was a dark horse contender earlier in the year and still leads the conference in passing yards, touchdowns and completions. They are undefeated in conference play and are right alongside the Bruins in the AP and Coaches Poll top 10. There is obviously a lot more at stake than individual awards races Saturday afternoon, but it's hard not to pay attention to arguably the two biggest names taking the field Saturday going head to head. The Auburn transfer is having a career year, completing 70.4% of his passes for 1,526 yards, 12 touchdowns, three picks and a 157.4 passer rating. For one, he has yet to beat his former team in three tries. The sold-out crowd of 54,000 will be loud, and the rain could play a factor as well. The lone road game the Bruins have played this season was against 0-3 Colorado, which was just a week away from firing coach Karl Dorrell.
The pregame show is on the West Coast for the first time this season and Eugene, Oregon, always delivers. Here are the best signs from Saturday.

The defense has been far from perfect but with an offense that has been able to outscore their way out of problems, the Bruins are definite favorites in the Pac-12 South. The Bruins' College Football Playoff and Rose Bowl hopes took a hit Saturday as the Ducks racked up the points to seal the win.
The Ducks scored three points in their opener against the reigning national champions, No. UCLA was in a hole from that point on, and the fact that they had to settle for a field goal on their opening drive when a holding penalty erased a touchdown suddenly stung a lot more. From deep passes to screens, Nix got basically everything he wanted all day long, in addition to picking up 51 yards and a handful of notable third-and-fourth-down conversions with his legs. The Ducks recovered and strung together another touchdown drive, going up two scores in a matter of minutes on the stolen possession. 10 Oregon (6-1, 4-0 Pac-12) in Eugene on Saturday, losing the game 45-30. top-10 matchup in the Pac-12 since 2016, the Bruins were unable to rise to the occasion, and their nine-game winning streak that dated back to 2021 was officially snapped.
Oregon took a page out of Chip Kelly's playbook Saturday, using an onside kick in the second quarter that helped propel the Ducks to a 45-30 win over No.
"He trusts me with what I see, and I think this is the closest we've been all season." Lanning said one of the team's goals Saturday was to ensure it had the edge on explosive plays, which Kelly's offense had been doing with ease. But against UCLA on Saturday, he knew he would have to outmaneuver Kelly on offense to have a chance at beating the former Ducks coach. "At halftime, we sat there and talked about how the most physical team is going to win this game," Lanning said. Following a tumultuous season at Auburn last year, Nix has displayed the ideal combination of explosiveness and composure under Dillingham's direction. As the Ducks' offense came off the field, it tried to disperse on the sideline to not give anything away. "I think you can kind of give credit to a lot of our success offensively to Coach Lanning's aggression, right now," Nix said postgame. We felt like if there was a chance to steal a possession, it would be before the weather really hit." "When you keep an explosive offense like that off the field it slows them down, makes them cold," Nix said. The Ducks were down 21-10 in the second quarter at the time, and the play sparked a 49-10 scoring run for Oregon and a win over the ninth-ranked Cardinal. "We saw it after the first kickoff, and we felt like, OK, that's the look we want, we think we got a chance for it. It seemed like a pretty picture-perfect day to be an Oregon Duck, didn't it? The day started with ESPN's College GameDay over on the quad out front of the ...
Eugene hasn’t historically been a place for the top pass-catchers to come and thrive, but I think that could be changing in the years to come. With 8 catches for 132 yards and 2 TD, it’s clear that what Franklin is doing for this team is of the utmost value. The key to the game, however, was Oregon’s ability to make the Bruins settle for 3 points, rather than 6. However, even if they should drop one of those games, they will likely have at the very least a tie for the best conference record, and a more-than-likely shot at getting to the conference championship game. They had some fourth downs where I wish we would’ve been able to get off the field. At this point, though, it’s pretty clear that the Pac-12 title runs through Eugene, metaphorically speaking of course. This was a statement win that felt more lopsided than the scoreboard would suggest, and it might have been enough to make waves in the College Football Playoff conversation. What’s even more encouraging than that was the fact that Oregon was able to show so much more than just that ground-and-pound mentality. The day started with ESPN’s College GameDay over on the quad out front of the Knight Library on campus, and it ended with a dismantling of the No. Maybe his stock continues to rise and we truly have the next great Oregon QB on our hands. His stats have been worthy for almost a month, now, but his reputation at Auburn made it so that few national pundits would give him the credit deserved. Oregon’s offense was electric once again on Saturday, putting up 45 points against one of the better defenses in the country.
Oregon proved itself a playoff contender and Miami (Fla.) again disappointed to headline this winners and losers from Week 8 in college football.
UCF's loss to East Carolina creates some separation at the top of the American and in the race for the access-bowl bid to the New Year's Six. A matchup of the last two teams unbeaten in MAC play was going Toledo's way until the fourth quarter, when the Rockets allowed Buffalo to reverse a 27-10 deficit with 24 unanswered points and steal a 34-27 win. This loss is the first of several looming for Ole Miss, which had a very friendly schedule in the first half but closes with Texas A&M, Alabama, Arkansas and rival Mississippi State. Leading 17-3 in the second quarter, the Rebels had a shot at putting LSU in a corner but failed to capitalize on that early lead by giving up two scores in a three-minute span. Stroud in check for the first half, the Hawkeyes committed six turnovers and suffered a 54-10 loss to the Buckeyes that stands as the program's worst margin of defeat since 1999, Kirk Ferentz's first season. 17 in the Coaches Poll, Miami will need to win three games against a schedule of Virginia, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Clemson and Pittsburgh just to reach a bowl. [Nine unbeaten teams entered the weekend](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2022/10/19/unbeaten-college-football-teams-potential-first-loss/10523400002/), all in the Power Five. 17 Kansas State, the Horned Frogs scored a huge touchdown late in the first half and then dominated the second half to earn a key 38-28 win against one of the fellow frontrunners in the Big 12. The good news is that Clemson survived the Syracuse upset effort; the bad news is a dormant quarterback controversy is now alive and well, threatening to devour the rest of the regular season. The Longhorns had several opportunities to put the Cowboys away but struggled to get things going through the air and on third down, as quarterback Quinn Ewers struggled to get going after two very good starts against Oklahoma and Iowa State. Closing strong has become a theme for Kelly's team, which has owned the second half in games against Florida State, Auburn and Ole Miss. 9 Oregon is now in the thick of the College Football Playoff race after a 45-30 win against No.
Below is a transcript from Lanning's postgame press conference. DAN LANNING. Opening Statement. “Wow. I had a pretty good feeling this was going to be an ...
“I’m excited for our players to have success and I’m excited for the coaches. I’m excited for the university and for the people that support this university so much to see that success. The first one, there was an opportunity to take the ball down the field and it didn’t really develop. We wanted to make sure we didn’t have a lot of eye violations in this game and our guys did a good job of that.” Our offense has been operating at a really high level and I think that’s credit to our offensive coaches and credit to our players for the work they put in during the week.” “You like guys that catch the ball and Troy catches the ball. “Ultimately we wanted to tried to eliminate one-on-one opportunities and we wanted to try and have vision to be able to close and finish the play on him. “I’ll have to go back and watch the film, but that’s a really cohesive unit. We have a team that has buy-in, believes in what they’re doing and that’s when you have a chance to be really successful.” It was there, we saw it after the first kickoff and we felt like that’s the look we want. I don’t think anybody on our team is satisfied and that’s what gives this team a chance to be hungry and great. You look at the brand of football we played going into the half and coming out in the third quarter, we said we’re going to run the ball and be physical.
The Ducks took sole possession of first place with their win over UCLA on Saturday in week 8.
After Oregon scored early in the second quarter to go up 17-10, it looked like this was going to turn into a back-and-forth game that would come down to the end. They held UCLA to a field goal but needed to see how they respond. Lanning also went for a couple of critical fourth downs, knowing then and there he had to put his foot down and take control of this game one way or another. Coming out of the half, UCLA got the ball first and drove down the field to get to their own 45 before converting a huge fourth down. In Pullman, they got under his skin and made life very tough for him, but he was able to pull out the win. While they were able to re-steady Nix and push on to the win, it highlights how important that rhythm is to Oregon. They beat him down and made it look like Oregon had made the wrong choice at quarterback. In that Georgia game, the defense made his life a nightmare. I know this applies to a lot of QBs but I feel like this is especially true for Nix this season. This is one that goes all the way back to the beginning of the season. From the mauling they took from Georgia to the penalty-marred blowout vs. Combined, the Ducks and Bruins had 14 for 115 yards, with Oregon accounting for eight penalties for 50 yards.
The Oregon Ducks football team still has five conference games to go, but after their 45-30 victory over No. 10 UCLA, no one can argue they are the ...

The Frogs rallied from a 28-10 deficit to beat Kansas State 38-28 and remain as the only unbeaten team in the Big 12. The Aggies, who began the season as a Top Ten team are now 3-4 on the season 1-3 in the SEC West with conference games remaining against Ole Miss, Auburn, Florida and LSU, all of them possible losses, although only the Auburn game is on the road. So Clemson coach Dabo Swinney made the switch to freshman back up Cade Klubnik, who sparked the Tigers to a 27-21 win 4 in the final CFP rankings, which would give them a spot in the Final Four. Their latest conquest on Saturday was a 45-20 win over previously unbeaten Ole Miss, which had jumped to a 17-3 lead. The Ducks have no resume to speak, with wins over Eastern Washington and BYU not mounting too much.
“@UCLAFootball y'all ever seen this many fans before?” Losing is one thing… getting trolled by a Duck is a whole different type of insult. The loss was UCLA's ...
But the fact is that when an offense scores 40 or more points, teams are going to have strong chances of emerging victorious. Oregon football’s defense would have liked to perform a bit better. The loss was UCLA’s first of the season.
The Georgia Bulldogs were off this weekend, their first break since the start of the 2022 season. But the college football world didn't stop, with ple.
The Bulldogs will head down to Jacksonville, Fla., to take on those Gators. That will change in the coming weeks, with Ohio State visiting No. While all the top five teams in action won, none of the victories came against opponents that were impressive enough to vault them past the No. “This is the Georgia-Florida matchup,” Smart said. To this point, Oregon is the only ranked win on Georgia’s schedule. LSU handed Ole Miss its first loss of the season, winning in dominant fashion against Lane Kiffin’s bunch. And that should only strengthen Georgia’s resume, as the Bulldogs have an emphatic 49-3 win over Oregon that took place all the way back in Week 1. 1 Bulldogs in the rankings. While the final score showed a 45-30 win for the No. But the college football world didn’t stop, with plenty of top teams in action. The result that caught the most people’s eyes was Oregon’s dominant win over No. 10 Ducks, the game was not that close.
The Georgia Bulldogs dominated Oregon, 49-3, to open the 2022 college football season. Georgia's blow out win over quarterback Bo Nix and the Oregon Ducks ...
If Georgia loses to Tennessee, who is undefeated, and the Volunteers win out, then the Bulldogs would still have a chance to make the CFP with an 11-1 record. Head coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs would get picked for the CFP over Oregon if both teams have only one loss at the end of the season. The Ducks still have a shot at making the College Football Playoff, but they probably have to win out.
Georgia football's 46-point Week 1 victory over Oregon looks better and better each week, especially with the Ducks destroying No. 9 UCLA.
The Bulldogs will have plenty of opportunities in the final month of the regular season to solidify or lose their No. So far this year, Tennessee has the best win in college football against Alabama. The next AP poll will have Oregon hovering around the Top 5. 9 UCLA, one of the hottest teams in college football, and stopped Dorian Thompson-Robinson and the Bruins in their tracks. The Bulldogs slaughtered the Ducks, 49-3, in Week 1. That’s because Oregon is making their season-opening victory more valuable by the week.
