SAN DIEGO -- We all expected an exciting National League Championship Series between the Padres and Phillies. Through two games, both teams have delivered.
[Ranger Suárez](https://www.mlb.com/player/ranger-suarez-624133) (10-7, 3.65 ERA) will make his second start of the 2022 postseason. Follow him on Twitter [@ajcassavell](https://twitter.com/ajcassavell). The Padres also face an interesting decision in the leadoff spot, with Jurickson Profar and Ha-Seong Kim as options. He was excellent early, then struggled in the middle, before piecing it back together in September. [Joe Musgrove](https://www.mlb.com/player/605397) (10-7, 2.93 ERA), who has allowed two runs across 13 innings. All games are available in the U.S. Live games are also available in select countries outside the U.S. In all best-of-seven series that were tied 1-1, the Game 3 winner has captured the series 67 of 97 times (69%). [punched first in Game 1](https://www.mlb.com/news/phillies-win-nlcs-game-1-2022) on Tuesday afternoon as Zack Wheeler’s seven scoreless innings were too much for San Diego to overcome. The Phillies are 2-0 at home this postseason, while the Padres are 3-2 on the road. I expect to do the same thing.” Now the series shifts to Philadelphia, which will host its first NLCS game since Oct.
After the Padres beat the Phillies 8-5 in Game 2 on Wednesday to even the series 1-1, the series shifts to Philadelphia for three games.
He located a couple of rocks and placed them side-by-side on the threshold of the fence opening. He stopped playing DJ for the young Dominican baseball prospects playing in front of a dozen major-league scouts and stood. Soto hit six regular-season homers in 182 at-bats for the Padres, who pulled off a deadline deal for the ages to acquire him for this very moment. It was the fifth inning of Wednesday’s Game 2, but it was getting late fast because the Phillies were on the verge of blowing a four-run lead in a game that would have propelled them much closer to a National League pennant. Preller shook up the league with a bold series of trades that gave up prospects to net his team Juan Soto, Josh Bell and Brandon Drury. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Bryce Harper led off with a single through the shift on the right side, but he was immediately wiped out on a first-pitch double play off the bat of Nick Castellanos. He delivered with a run-scoring single, and he spiked the bat hard enough to break through the Earth's crust and settle in the mantle. It was a less eventual inning than the first, but you have Marsh to think for that Suárez resumed dealing, and he got out of the inning with just the one run scored and a tied game. But Musgrove didn't help himself with an 0-2 count and two outs in the inning, giving up a double to Nick Castellanos. As is, it was one on, one out, and Trent Grisham popped out for the second out, and Domínguez got Austin Nola with a filthy slider to end the game. As Domínguez was gearing up for the final pitch of the top half of the inning, the Citizens Bank organist played a few bars of "Hells Bells."

[The Phillies game is scheduled to begin at 7:37 p.m.](https://www.inquirer.com/phillies/phillies-game-3-san-diego-padres-tv-channel-stream-live-time-fs1-20221021.html). The first man up is Suárez, who will take the mound in Game 3, 10 days after going just 3⅓ innings in a 7-6 win in Game 1 of the NLDS in Atlanta. Hand relieved Aaron Nola in Game 2 with two outs in the fifth inning of a tie game with runners on second and third. He was sent to triple-A Lehigh Valley, and was traded to the Angels, minutes before the Aug. He also led the Padres to a clinching victory over the New York Mets, allowing just one hit and one walk in seven innings. He finally had his October moment.](https://www.inquirer.com/phillies/phillies-braves-nlds-realmuto-mlb-playoffs-20221015.html) Howard will be the fourth member of the 2008 World Series championship team to throw a first pitch in this postseason. Then Rhys Hoskins botched a grounder that led to a run in the fifth inning. Segura dropped a double-play ball that led to a run in the fourth inning. While we wait for some more action in the game, here’s a look at how Schwarber celebrated his homer in the dugout. Alec Bohm drove him home with a hard-hit double of his own, giving the Phillies a 4-2 lead, and knocking Musgrove out of the game. Jean Segura, who had a wild night in Game 3, made up for a one-run error with a two-run single in the fourth.

This was not the case in Game 1 of the NLDS, when he allowed five runs in 2 2/3 innings against the Dodgers. The one time he faced the Phillies this season he worked five scoreless innings on May 17. Alvarado threw 27 pitches, too, but the bottom line is the Phillies had to hold this lead and they did. José Alvarado struck out two in his inning of work and went back out for the eighth, but he gave up a leadoff single to Juan Soto. The only Phillies pitcher to record a six-out playoff save, previously, was Tug McGraw. Ranger Suárez was up to the task for the Phillies. It should be noted that the ball wasn't well struck, but also let's give credit to Soto for fighting off a two-strike pitch for a shift-beating single to left. Schwarber had a brutal first two rounds of the playoffs, but he hit a monster shot -- 488 feet -- in Game 1 and now this one put the Phillies up 1-0 early. It was quite an up-and-down night for the veteran who is a playoff rookie. He had seven leadoff homers in the regular season and this was his 11th career playoff homer in his 137th at-bat. The Phillies had a 1-0 lead at the time, so they had the corners in, ready to throw home on a grounder. Much to the delight of the 45,279 fans packed into Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies prevailed in an entertaining game from start to finish.
The San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies meet in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series on Friday, October 21.
Musgrove is the better starting pitcher, and there is not enough of a discrepancy in bullpen usage or lineups to take the Phillies in this game. The Phillies have five batters on the NLCS roster with a .320+ xwOBA since August 1 in the regular season against righties. San Diego also has five batters on the NLCS roster with a .320+ xwOBA. The Padres have struggled out of the bullpen, but Musgrove has gone at least six innings in each playoff appearance. Lastly, the Philly bullpen is relatively similar to the Padres. Outside of not allowing hard contact (73rd percentile in average exit velocity and hard hit rate), his peripherals are not encouraging. The Phillies have the fourth-highest chase rate on the season at nearly 31%. Suárez only has one appearance in the playoffs this year, in which he allowed one earned run in 3 1/3 innings. He also ranked in the 82nd percentile in walk rate and the 74th percentile in chase rate. Ranger Suárez will start in Game 3 for the Philadelphia Phillies against Joe Musgrove and the San Diego Padres. He did so by not allowing hard contact (90th percentile in average exit velocity and 88th in hard hit rate). In addition, Josh Hader has looked more like himself in the playoffs.
Even though it's the road team that aims to earn a split in the first two games in a best-of-7, it's the San Diego Padres who should be feeling pretty good ...
While San Diego’s offense is built on patience and the ability to work deep into counts to get a walk or hunt a mistake, the Phillies prefer a swing-and-ask-questions-later approach. What’s more, is that Suarez likely won’t have much of a margin of error to work with on Friday. Lack of command has been an issue for Suarez all season, as he ranks in the 36th percentile in walk rate this season. This will only be Suarez’s second appearance of the postseason after he allowed one earned run in 3.1 innings in Game 1 against the Braves. AZ, CO, IA, IL, IN, LA, MI, NJ, NY, PA, TN, VA, WV, WY only. That simply comes down to the pitching matchup, which looks like a mismatch on paper with Joe Musgrove going for San Diego and Philadelphia turning to Ranger Suarez.

Both stars are looking to win the World Series for the first time. Machado lost in his only trip, with the Dodgers against Boston in 2017. It’s up to Suárez to disarm the Padres in front of a raucous home crowd. Future Hall of Famer Gil Hodges notably went 0 for 21 in the 1952 World Series for Brooklyn against the Yankees. Harper is hammering away at .419 (13 for 31) with four home runs and four doubles for Philadelphia in this year’s postseason. A group of six security guards and police officers pulled the man away before he could shoot a picture with his cell phone. “He kind of hugged me and said something like: ‘OK, we better win today, because I spent all my money on the ticket,’” Altuve said. Houston leads the Yankees 2-0. The best-of-7 series is tied 1-1 after beating San Diego beat Philadelphia 8-5 in Game 2 Wednesday. The game will be Certain triggers that I have, and what it is that really gets to me and being able to have some awareness of what those things are before I got into a moment like this. left-hander Ranger Suarez for the Phillies.

He decided to lift Suárez, who allowed two hits, two runs, and struck out three while throwing 68 pitches, after five innings and bring in a right hander Zach Eflin at the top of sixth. Domínguez had thrown 18 pitches an inning earlier, but he had a wet towel wrapped around his right arm to keep it warm, an indication that he was preparing to go back out for the ninth. McCarthy has broadcasted a few innings on the radio during each postseason game since the TV broadcasts are handled in October by national outlets. Manager Rob Thomson said it would have been a “fist fight” if the Phillies ever wanted to place Schwarber on the injured list. So far this series against the Padres, he has four hits in 10 at-bats, including a pair of home runs, in three games. Kyle Schwarber injured his knee during the last week of the season in Washington.
