The Modern Warfare 2 ending and post-credits sequence sure seem to be hinting at a sequel, here's where MW2's story leaves the 141 and Shepherd.

In case you didn’t recognise the references, Makarov is the main antagonist of the original Modern Warfare 2 and we first meet him during a mission (called No Russian) in which the player carries out a terrorist attack on a Russian airport. After carrying out the attack you make your escape, only for Makarov to execute you and leave your body behind. To help him do this as quickly as possible, Shepherd puts Shadow Company – led by Philip Graves – in charge, boots 141 off the mission, imprisons a number of Vargas’s soldiers and steals his base. Laswell confirms that Shepherd has vanished without a trace – so we expect to meet him in the inevitable Modern Warfare 3 – but also says she’s been digging into more information about Russian involvement in the missile heist. Modern Warfare 2 2022 takes place three years after the events of the first reboot and follows Task Force 141 on a globetrotting journey to track down and reclaim a series of US missiles that have fallen into the hands of terrorist cell Al Qatala. And just to get this out of the way: there are major plot spoilers ahead.

Plus, it was great to hear Gaz’s Elliot Knight flex his comedy chops while dangling from a rope after falling out of a helicopter. The devs have outdone themselves, with Call of Duty feeling even more immersive than Modern Warfare 2019. While there are still a few uncomfortable moments, such as chasing a target through people’s homes and threatening them with guns, for better or worse, the focus is more on action-packed fun than the grim reality of war.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2's is a technical masterpiece and full of thrills, but its representation of war is still problematic.

I approach a door where the thumping is coming from - is it some kind of turbine? This is the purpose of the scene, I can’t deny that—it’s just out of place amongst all the weirdly macho-bullshit jokes and “yee-haws.” Again, that same conflicted feeling - is war like that? There is a dying man on the floor. I was engaging with an experience - even if that is through the medium of a video game - that many people have lived through this year. The campaign also focuses on the everyday suffering of warfare, and these were the parts that were most challenging. In one room, I find a woman crying over her dead brother, son, husband, friend - but I pull the trigger too quickly, and it’s only after the bullet has left the gun that I realise what I have done. This is brilliantly offset against Graves, a shadowy commander of an elite US spec ops force, okaying the leveling of a small village in Mexico. Hassan, the game’s big bad, spends a lot of time talking about Western imperialism and the destruction of his homeland. Modern Warfare 2 has the budget of a blockbuster - you can tell by the several hundred people featured in the credits - and the topics it deals with (Iranian missiles, Russian interference, terrorists, Mexican cartels) are all old hat at this point. These epic scenes are scored with an anxiety-inducing soundtrack, and the voice actors are top class, helping deeply instill a sense of brotherhood. It took a lot of what made 2019 good - the tense breaching sequences, team-based combat, the micro-conflicts - and expanded on them. The campaign is fascinating, macabre, and stupid, set against a backdrop of spectacular set pieces, gimmicky military phrases (“We work low and slow, we’re off the books”, or “Death from above, fucker”), and a spiralling narrative that takes you from Middle Eastern deserts to the canals of Amsterdam.

There’s a sense of satisfaction to be found in the combat, and both player movement and weapon handling feel weighty and realistic. If we look at the pacing, we see a game that moves from a wide, open environment to close-knit linear pathways in the space of a few minutes. However, a lot of what I disagreed with could be considered subjective, and the next player might absolutely adore these features. I understand that this part of my MW2 campaign review is a little haphazard, but that’s honestly the impression I have of the game itself. It essentially forces the player into a strange survival niche, stripping them of their ability to fight and ultimately forcing them into a tight and difficult corner. There’s an imbalance present in the difficult ratings of the game, and even Recruit feels like a slog at times. From enemies falling through the map to doors refusing to open, and from sound bugs to bizarre insta-death scenes, I found the Modern Warfare 2 campaign to be relatively unstable. I found that the ‘most advanced Call of Duty AI ever’ was incredibly unintelligent, certain chapters and elements of the game made no sense whatsoever, and Infinity Ward had made it more difficult than it really needed to be. There’s a staggering amount of detail on display, from the pores on a character’s skin to the way their eyes move and portray almost real-time emotions. Of course, if you’re playing on a PC, all these elements mean that you’re going to have a hard time running it at a high level, especially if you’re using an older rig. From the moment the first cinematic kicks off, we’re treated to sumptuous graphics and a character modelling and movement engine that simply is best-in-class. For many, this is the most highly anticipated game of the year, bringing about a Call of Duty title that will remain in place until 2024.
