Nets lose season opener to Pelicans, 130-108, as Ben Simmons ... (NetsDaily)

Things did not go as planned. The Brooklyn Nets got walloped in the season opener, 130-108, by the New Orleans Pelicans despite Kevin Durant's 32 points on ...

We’re here to support him, we’re here to push him, coach him up, and try to get him to a place where he can play at the level he’s played in the past. “I mean, I think that you see those glimpses throughout the preseason, but now putting it together, really getting his legs under him, his rhythm, and then assimilating to a new group—there’s a lot on his plate. He faked the pass to Kevin Durant, drove to the cup when the defense shifted over toward the Nets’ star, and then had himself another awesome finish through contact to complete the play. Brooklyn got things back on track in the second quarter, beginning with an excellent pass from Ben Simmons to Nic Claxton in the short roll and a corner three from Markieff Morris. Fortunately, the Nets finished the quarter strong when Nic Claxton—the only antidote to the unstoppable force that was Zion Williamson—used his impressive 7’2” wingspan to pin Zion’s layup to the glass, leading to a Kevin Durant three on the other end. A 22-point blowout loss and a 0-1 start to the season with a tough opponent, the Toronto Raptors, headed to Brooklyn on Friday. That’s a part of just being competitive, being aware, and understanding what our weaknesses are and trying to combat them from the start.” Then, three straight steals by Royce O’Neale shrunk that deficit to just 12, and the Pellies were forced to call timeout. In typical Nets fashion, the onslaught began with a slow start, as the Nets missed their first three shots. I think there’s a lot of jitters out there early on, but it was good to get out of the way.” Rebounding was Brooklyn’s Achilles heel on Wednesday, with the Pelicans out-boarding the Nets 61-39. “I talked about the other day, just us being tested and us being challenged,” said Kyrie Irving after the loss.

5 takeaways from Pelicans' season-opening victory in Brooklyn ... (NBA.com)

Looking spry and explosive, Zion Williamson returned from an 18-month absence with 25 points and 9 rebounds.

Unrestricted free agency awaits Kyrie next summer; in the meantime, Irving has that much time to put opening night in the rearview and prove that it was a fluke. And while Durant, Irving and Simmons are all in uniform, the Nets can’t be accurately judged one way or another until Seth Curry and Joe Harris return to the rotation. Therefore, he comes into 2022-23 with plenty of incentive to (a) put aside his quirks, especially if they interfere with his play or threaten the team’s success, and (b) deliver a star-quality season. Question: When was the last time the Nets were at full strength since Durant and Irving teamed up in the summer of 2019? It’s the first of 82, and the Nets have clearly stated a desire to remain patient with Simmons … Kyrie shot just 6-for-19, missed all six of his 3-pointers, and when the Nets needed a second option, he couldn’t fulfill the role. The good news for the Nets is Kyrie is actually eligible to play at home, which wasn’t always the case last season because of his vaccination status. The success and failure of the Pelicans this season, therefore, will rest with what they can muster defensively. The force and rim-attacking and gentle touch around the basket all resurfaced and rekindled the image of Zion as a dominant player, which he was during most of the 85 games played in his short and injury-interrupted career. That said, the level of disappointment needs to be placed in the proper context: It wasn’t anything like his playoff game finish in Philly two years ago when he bypassed a layup over the Hawks’ Trae Young, and there won’t be any dreadful fallout from this game. He also showed a very solid cohesion with Brandon Ingram and the two Pelicans had a 1-2 inside-outside punch all night, with Ingram dropping 28 points. And yet, Simmons in Brooklyn looked suspiciously like the last time we saw Simmons in Philly.

Zion Williamson more than just 'decent' in Pelicans return (ESPN)

Pelicans coach Willie Green said it was like Williamson "didn't miss a beat." Brandon Ingram said he simply "picked up where he left off." And Nets forward ...

We're here to support him, we're here to coach him up and try to get him to a place where he can play at the level he's played at in the past." "When you have smart players and talent out there, it's easier to go out there and just play the game," he said. So I mean, they're in my corner so my confidence is going to stay high." "They just tell me to stay aggressive, keep attacking and just be myself. "All three of us run unselfish and we all have the same goal, and that's to win. Whatever I got to do, whatever they got to do to win, that's what we all going to do." Williamson said it was a "breath of fresh air" to get back on the floor after missing the 2021-22 regular season because of a broken foot. According to Williamson, it helps that all three players have the same goal in mind. It was the first time Williamson played with many of his new Pelicans teammates after not playing in a regular-season game since May 4, 2021. "This is probably the first time we played together for more than 20 minutes, including practices," McCollum said. Despite the time missed, the only player with more games with 20 or more points in the paint since the beginning of the 2019-20 season is In 86 career games, Williamson has had at least 20 points in the paint in 45 of those appearances, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

'That's what makes us great': Zion Williamson gushes on Pelicans (ClutchPoints)

Zion Williamson couldn't be prouder of his Pelicans teammates after they destroyed the Nets with a balanced effort in their season opener.

However, they wouldn’t have been able to beat the Nets 130-108 had it not for the contributions of the rest of the starters and their bench. Nonetheless, they have certainly proven that they are a hard team to beat, especially when they get everyone involved. After the game, Williamson was naturally happy about his performance.

Zion Williamson y sus New Orleans Pelicans merecen entrar en la ... (Sporting News)

Enorme primer partido de Zion Williamson y sus Pelicans, con una contundente victoria en Brooklyn. Cuidado con New Orleans.

Pelicans' dominant 130-108 victory over Nets puts rest of NBA on ... (The Bird Writes)

Not only did all three of New Orleans' stars shine brightly, so too did other Pels who stepped out onto the floor.

As a team, the Pelicans grabbed 12 more offensive rebounds in leading to a lopsided 61-39 overall advantage on the glass. Irving was off, hitting only six of 19 shot attempts, and the Net’s defense was just porous throughout. We can all still vividly remember his performances in the play-in games and playoffs from last spring, but he legitimately looked to be an improved player over that version of himself. You know, points in the paint, getting to the free throw line, we shot the ball well, and we took care of the basketball. He also added nine rebounds and dropped a couple of dimes. He really controlled the game well, and it appeared playing most of his minutes alongside Williamson greatly aided the generational talent to enjoy a fantastic debut after his long layoff. “I told our guys in the locker room that’s what our team is about. In 24 minutes, the second-year man hit four of six 3s to finish with 16 points. [New Orleans Pelicans](https://www.thebirdwrites.com) arrived in Brooklyn in hopes of finding a way to claw out a victory against, at worst, a near championship contender. Glancing at his box score, like tonight’s six-point, four-rebound, three-assist line, will never reveal the whole story, but just ask Durant about consistently being hounded by Jones. It’s fun to watch.” “Wire-to-wire, I thought it was a pretty dominant performance.

... Irving addressed the crowd before the start of the game and made a plea for the return of WNBA star Brittney Griner from a Russian prison. It was a bad way to start the season for a Nets team that desperately wants to forget the last one. Nets: Brooklyn was missing its two best outside shooters, with Joe Harris (sore left foot) and Seth Curry (left ankle) not ready for the start of the season. “It’s very difficult going through injuries, especially when you’re really young and you’ve been working your tail off to try and be prepared to come in and help your team and you suffer a setback,” Green said. His basket-shaking dunk with about 8 1/2 minutes remaining brought some of the few cheers from a dejected crowd who watched the home team never lead and trail by as many as 26. Brandon Ingram scored 28 points and CJ McCollum had 21 for the Pelicans, who finished strong last season and opened impressively in this one.
