In an overtime thriller, RJ Barrett had his worst shooting night of the season, and Cam Reddish arose from the grave to (almost) save his Canadian bacon.
He was overlooked a few times in the first half, and in the second, he couldn’t find a rhythm. Who could the Knicks rely on to tie the game with a three-pointer? But Jalen Brunson planted his feet in the paint and caught a face-full of Ja to draw the offensive charge. This year, the Knicks have Jalen Brunson to lead them late in tightly contested games, and he redeemed a quiet game by hitting the gas in the final minutes of regulation. Morant got the ball and converted a difficult shot off the glass with 8 seconds to go. For the half, they shot 19-for-57 (33%) from the floor and 5-for-21 (24%) from deep. Compare that to the Grizz’s 22-for-51 (43%) and 11-for-25 (44%). The Knicks would not relent and with three minutes remaining, Randle threaded a beautiful assist to Brunson to take the lead, 96-95. He had 22 points on 10/15 (!!!) shooting, and finally looks like he’s ready to make the leap that has been expected from him for the past two years or so. Luka Doncic’s 35 and Christian Wood’s 25 weren’t enough to stop Phoenix’s comeback from down 22 in the third. This was tight down the stretch, but I have to imagine it would have been a different game if Garland had a full evening’s work. Give it a read. Ultimately, the Grizzlies clawed this game out, exposing the Knicks inability to truly complete comebacks and closeout games when it matters most – a common theme of last season. New York began the second half sluggish, but gradually, timely buckets from the backcourt, and Randle dominating down low as well, saw the Grizzlies lead evaporate, as the Knicks came from 19 down to take a one point lead with under four minutes remaining in regulation. Reddish impressed greatly off the bench, bringing some needed energy late in the game and overall contributing 22 points, on 9-for-15 shooting, including the game-tying three-pointer with a few seconds left in the fourth to send the game to overtime. Outside of some of the Knicks main stars, Fournier has the potential to be one of the Knicks most effective players this year. Still, Memphis’ early hot hand from three saw the Knicks enter the half trailing by 15. In his Knick debut, Memphis got Brunson off the court quickly.
The Memphis Grizzlies, the Western Conference's defending No. 2 seed, needed overtime to get by the New York Knicks. Is this a loss the Knicks can live ...
Brunson's signature Knicks moment to date is likely the charge he took in the final second of regulation, absorbing Morant's would-be winning drive to get the offensive foul call. The fact that the second overall pick put in 34 points and the most notable defensive stop came from Brunson probably tells you all you need to know about how that went. Immediately it's an upgrate to the areas behind Robinson last season, which were eiither aging (Taj Gibson) or ailing (Nerlens Noel). The fact they're reserving all interior bench moments for Hartenstein is very, very telling: the NBA G Leauge Finals MVP from 2019 was no brargain during the free agency process, costing $8 million over the next two seasons. Metropolitan opportunitiy likewise knocked for Isaiah Hartenstein, who was by far the most impressive of the Knicks who earned a new contract this summer. Hartenstein proved so reliable that the Knicks sat Jericho Sims all night. If the Knicks can get this kind of Reddish every night ... Things started dubiously (2-of-6) but Reddish saved his best for last, sinking 12 points in a fourth quarter that saw the Knicks force an extra session. even when Grimes does come back ... but only a tired refrain for the His coming free agency, however, is far from his mind, as he As a Monday, this is a contract year for Cam Reddish.
Cam Reddish ended up playing 28 minutes, and scored 22 points on 9-15 shooting, including draining three crucial three pointers.
He didn’t immediately live up to the hype during his first stint with New York, and ultimately missed a large portion of the season with a right shoulder injury. “My teammates were encouraging me throughout the game,” Reddish said after the contest. He was also solid on the boards, and racked up five rebounds.
Losing 115-112 in overtime in their first game of the season to the Memphis Grizzlies, the New York Knicks received a surprise boost from an unlikely name.
This is surely a welcoming sight for the Knicks in their first game of the year and head coach Tom Thibodeau recognized this. “That was a big plus and his length is important for us.” I’m trying to make the right play.” Just trying to find my way, be aggressive, be assertive. Playing in a total of 28 minutes, Reddish hit a game-tying shot with 3.3 seconds left in regulation to force overtime in Memphis. “Just getting more comfortable, get with my teammates, my teammates encouraging me throughout the game, Julius [Randle] telling me to be aggressive.

Lee Escobedo: It would be great to see the positive vibes return to MSG. Hopefully, Julius Randle microdosed mushrooms during the summer to get his groove back.
New York had a disappointing season last year and were still in the mix for it, so this season they should make it after addressing their biggest need on the team with the acquisition of Brunson. The Hornets, Pacers, Cavaliers, Bulls and possibly Raptors will also be in the mix; however, if the Knicks can improve even a bit from last season, they will be in good shape for the play-in. Thibs will only get the heave-ho if the team loses a bunch, but he intends to win every game, and in Brunson he has a dependable, durable lead guard who shares his vision. However, it is the NBA, and it is New York, so the Knicks need to meet those expectations. The Knicks need Brunson not only to put up numbers, but to be their metronome when they need steadying and the pilot light sparking them when they need a boost. He is so close to moving into that role on the Knicks and I think he has an All-Star type of season in 2022-23. If he can — and the achievement of such cannot be overstated — then this team has the potential to shock the world come playoff time. Every season under Thibodeau he has gotten better on both ends of the floor and I can’t wait to see what his impact on this Knicks team will look like this year. The Knicks gave up so much for him so that has to be a success. To be fair, there are other big fears, but if the Knicks are going to make the play-in or better Randle needs to be part of it in a massive way. Kento: I love RJ and think he can become the face of the franchise at some point, especially if he can be more consistent defensively. I don’t need him to be the All-Star he was two years ago, but he has to be better than he was last season.
The New York Knicks' road to redemption starts now. Hopefully. Look, only the next six months know whether or not the 'Bockers will recover from a rough...
Finally, New York needs to get this game because things get hairy in a hurry beyond it. More importantly, they'll need to take care of business against teams like the Wizards, a play-in-hopeful that could tread water if everything breaks right. Milwaukee is a juggernaut, and New York needs to see how it stacks up against the league's best. In a worst-case scenario, it's the kind of stretch that could sink the Knicks' season if they aren't careful. All three of their regular-season meetings come within a nine-day stretch, which this contest opens. The Bulls might be their biggest rivals this season, as they were the two Eastern Conference clubs that ESPN's

But Randle kept them afloat in the third quarter before With Robinson saddled with fouls, Memphis outrebounded New York by 10 overall and two in the offensive glass. Still, the Knicks fought hard behind the efforts of Jalen Brunson, Cam Reddish and Isaiah Hartenstein to give themselves a chance. The Knicks battled back from a 19-point second-half deficit and briefly led in the fourth quarter before falling short in overtime. Gone were the long twos in his shot diet. He was highly efficient, leading the Knicks with 24 points on 56.3 percent shooting from the floor.

The Knicks enter the season as the 11th youngest team, with 34-year-old Derrick Rose as their only player above 30. They were playing off each other (13.4 assists to 5.6 turnovers). But for the first time in a long while, the Knicks have a competent point guard who is just entering his prime. But don’t be fooled by the Grizzlies’ youth. They got rid of the injury-riddled Nerlens Noel and replaced him with Isaiah Hartenstein, one of the best backup centers last season.

The Memphis Grizzlies have announced their starters for Wednesday's game against the New York Knicks.
They will likely be a competitor for one of the final spots in the playoffs this season. The Knicks are a great example of this, as they were the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference in 2021, but last season missed the NBA Playoffs as the 11th seed. They beat the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the NBA Playoffs in six games but lost to the Golden State Warriors in the second round in six games.
The Knicks are back, friends! And so is the requisite heartbreak that comes with watching the Knicks. Our guys fought their hearts out in the second half, ...
The Knicks were better when playing through Reddish, who made the critics (myself included) look foolish with a tantalizing 22 points on 9-15 shooting, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. In OT, the Knicks got in trouble early when Julius Randle (who was sensational, by the way) fouled out. And so is the requisite heartbreak that comes with watching the Knicks.

Memphis, meanwhile, is trying to replicate last season when it finished with the league’s second-best record. Reddish’s 3-pointer with three seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime tied at 108. The Grizzlies took a 115-112 lead on Tyus Jones’ 3-pointer with 47.7 seconds left.

But a playmaker at the end of the game that takes a charge, gets a steal, makes the pass. They were also coming off an encouraging 3-1 preseason that teased the high potential of a starting lineup with Brunson running the show. They’re among the contenders in the Western Conference after winning 56 games last season but didn’t add much to the roster and lost Jackson Jr. “In every game, there’s the good plays and the bad plays,” Thibodeau said. Morant was a sorcerer with the ball, a speed demon and pogo stick. “He’s very good with the ball, very good with making plays. Randle was strong with 24 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, but he could only watch the end as teammate Evan Fournier missed a potential tying three-pointer at the buzzer. But Barrett was an inefficient mess while missing 15 of his 18 shots (including 0-for-6 from beyond the arc). “I want to take a look at when they say, ‘marginal contact.’ Maybe he needs to generate more speed.” That was earlier in the fourth quarter, and Morant’s “time” extended well beyond. After trailing for most of the contest, Reddish, who was a surprise addition to the rotation before the game, converted a game-tying corner three-pointer off Brunson’s dish with three seconds remaining. We all think the playmaker makes a pass.

It seems implausible to think that’s going to be a common line for him, but it’s not like he hasn’t owned intriguing talent and an unknown ceiling since his first day in the league. On opening night, he had his finest hour as a Knick: that game-tying 3, but also 22 points and five rebounds off the bench. The ball was in the air, and it looked true, and the way things had gone it sure seemed Evan Fournier was about to buy the Knicks five extra minutes of basketball on opening night. “I’m very excited to have a player like that on my team.” Down 19 in the third quarter, down three with 3.3 seconds left in regulation, they still had a shot. “I didn’t like how we got there, but I loved how we fought to get back out of it.

Unlike his dire preseason efforts, the first-round choice from Atlanta, who was not inked to a first-time extension at this week's deadline, put in 12 of his tallies in the final frame, putting in the tying triple off a helper from fellow metropolitan opening night rookie Jalen Brunson. Reddish almost turned into a hero in the New York Knicks' tough 115-122 overtime loss to the rising Western Conference powerhouse Memphis Grizzlies Friday.
With Grimes looking to make his season debut on Friday against the Detroit Pistons, Reddish gave Thibodeau something to ponder as they head home to New York. Reddish and Hartenstein carried the Knicks’ second unit as Immanuel Quickley, Obi Toppin and Derrick Rose were a measly 3 for 19 from the field. He attacked the rim well and got some easy buckets. Then he got out into the open floor. The 6-foot-8 Reddish scored 14 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and extra time. He got a surprise spot in the second unit after second-year wing Quentin Grimes sat out with left foot soreness again.
