Padres leaving bottom third of the order unchanged for Game 1 of the National League Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Opposite Wheeler, Padres right-hander Yu Darvish (2-0, 3.00 ERA) has struck out 11 over 12 innings this postseason, scattering 13 hits and two walks. Wheeler (0-1, 2.19 ERA) has a 9-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio through his first two postseason starts (12 1/3 innings). “I had different lineups I was looking at today but settled on (this). The 32-year-old right-hander has 18 strikeouts against no walks and eight hits in 14 2/3 innings in starts against the Padres the last two years. We’re getting production from guys at the bottom that feel good kind of around each other, some guys that can run a little bit at the bottom, some put-in-play kind of things with Nola.
After the Phillies and Padres surprised the sport and won their respective Division Series, the two teams face off in the National League Championship ...
As long as you put your work in, and you present yourself the best opportunity to stay here and play here, then you can go home and live with it no matter what happens.” He punched out three batters in the third, somehow strikeouts looking on fastballs clearly in the zone. His ears were burning, so he hit an opposite field shot off a sinker over the plate. Home plate umpire Brian Knight thought a ball hit Juan Soto’s foot after Soto bounced a 3-2 pitch just to the right of home plate. Is it great pitching by Wheeler or not great batting by the Padres? After some back and forth, the Phillies finally won the guessing game against Darvish, and it didn’t help that Darvish left the cutter high and over the plate. The seventh inning showed the good (two more ground-ball outs and a lineout, all on cutters) but the bad (the two homers from earlier in the game) still loom over the game as it enters the final third. Wheeler's velo was down to 95 to finish the the seventh, and incredibly that was three miles down from where he sat earlier in game. The starters were strong and the bullpen has remained intact for both teams to start the series. Alvarado looked like he coaxed the game-ending double play from Soto, but Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott conspired to make nothing out of something and extended the inning, setting the scene for Machado, who stepped in as the go-ahead run with one out. Austin Nola grounded out, but Jurickson Profar managed to get the tying run to the plate with a one out walk in front of Juan Soto and Manny Machado. And while Darvish gave up just three hits over seven innings, he exited before the eighth inning in a two-run hole.

Yu Darvish allows only two runs, both on homers, but Phillies starter Zack Wheeler and two relievers blank Padres in Game 1 of NLCS at Petco Park.
At a projected 488 feet, it was the farthest a ball had been hit at Petco Park and the farthest a ball had ever been hit by a Phillies player since Statcast began measuring distances in 2015. The 119.7 mph exit velocity was the hardest a Phillies player had ever hit a ball as well. With two outs and Schwarber on third base, Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth saved a run by diving to stop Harper’s 106 mph grounder in shallow right field and throwing to first. The Padres’ previous LCS occurred in 1998 and was played at Qualcomm Stadium. Darvish’s fifth strikeout ended that inning, and his sixth strikeout started the fourth. We need to come out and swing the bats a little better. “They know we need to come out and take at least one of these at home,” manager Bob Melvin said of the Padres’ players. Padres hitters did make a little history, as Tuesday was the first time in the franchise’s 48 postseason games that the Padres were held to one hit. Wednesday (FS1, 97.3-FM) before the series heads to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4 (and 5, if necessary). To get there again, they will need to win four games while the Phillies need just three more. “It was a hard-fought game,” Padres third baseman Manny Machado said. The previous two times they played in an LCS resulted in World Series appearances.
Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber both went deep, and Zack Wheeler and Philadelphia's bullpen combined to allow only one hit in a hard-fought Game 1.
I’m going to continue to pitch like I pitch. The novelty there will be that he will face his brother, San Diego catcher Austin Nola — just as he did in a regular-season game — which surely will put their parents in an emotional and awkward position. Another Game 2 twist will be Snell starting for the Padres and facing Harper. Harper had given Wheeler all the breathing room he would need in the fourth inning by pounding a 1-0 fastball the opposite way over the left field fence. I’m going to pitch how I pitch. Harper knew Snell was not throwing at him but, rather, attempting to work inside. Realmuto was on the business end of a nice mix of mid-90s fastballs and low-80s curveballs as Wheeler’s dominating postseason continued. He also was the last. Wheeler came into the day with an 18⅔ -innings scoreless streak against the Padres and, over seven regular season career starts, had a 2.06 E.R.A. He is 11 for 26 with four homers and three doubles this postseason. The beat, and beatings, go on for Philadelphia, following the same pattern. It was the longest home run ever recorded at Petco Park, which opened in 2004.

That brought Soto to the plate. The Rally Goose showed up, too, appearing on the giant video board in the eighth. The yellow towel-waving crowd of 44,826 did its part, exhorting the Padres with supportive chants throughout.
It's true. Think about it. When was the last time a professional San Diego sports teams won anything? The Padres won an NL Pennant in 1984 and 1998.
They were considered World Series contenders at the start of the season and now, one underwhelming 162-game campaign and franchise-mortgaging trade later, they are. And yet, because there’s always a yet, there’s no real reason to believe the Padres can’t do this. and the best they came up with is “Philly going down to yellow and brown.” This isn’t an embarrassment, it’s a humiliation.
A group of seven middle-aged men appeared on KUSI's Good Morning San Diego, all in Padres gear to perform their hip hop tribute to their favorite baseball team.
Guys! I would absolutely ask my parents to move, or transfer schools, and begin counting the days until I could move far, far away from what happened here today. The level of cringe here broke my cringeometer.

Chicago media told him the crowds were the loudest they’d heard at a baseball game. Veteran Braves players called it the loudest baseball environment they’d encountered. Imitating the likes of Manny Machado, Jorge Alfaro and Trent Grisham, half of San Diego’s now salting their Padres cheers. The tension built as Alfaro spouted cliches. On this season’s first summer night, he swatted a walk-off hit, an emerging specialty of his. Hockey players sound like monks (not Padres) in comparison.

The Phillies are really set up well here with Nola going and the bullpen having not worked overly hard in Game 1, but I think we're in for a long series and the Padres find a way to strike back.
