The Chargers allowed too many explosives. The Chargers defense has allowed 129 points this season. The Browns targeted Jackson nine times in the game, according to PFF, the most targets of any Chargers defensive player. The best word I can use to describe the Chargers defense through five games: inconsistent. Here is a list of Broncos and Chargers players who have posted games with 15+ PPR points this season. The former is very unacceptable pace that will motivate the Chargers to throw at Mathis, while the latter is a slightly below average number that won’t cause Los Angeles to reconsider its approach. The Broncos rank 25th in the league in tight end receiving yards per game at 37. That means Jackson is losing the coverage battle in multiple ways and thus will be tested by Courtland Sutton and/or Jerry Jeudy early and often in this matchup. The Chargers rank 30th in fantasy points allowed per game on vertical passes. Mathis wasn’t called on the latter one, however, and it leads to the Chargers getting a terrible 18-yard punt. Good result after facing a 2nd-and-18 and a 3rd-and-14 on the first set of downs.— Nick Kosmider (@NickKosmider) First catch and first TD in the first quarter of his first NFL game.

'Monday Night Football' betting predictions for Broncos-Chargers (The Washington Post)

The Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers are limping into their prime time showdown in Southern California.

We’ve gone from “Let Russ cook!” to “Is Russ cooked?” over the first five games of the season as he has labored to get the Broncos’ offense going. I personally went with Chargers -6 in the first half at a price of +150. Yes, Wilson hasn’t been great, but how much is the narrative being shaped by the fact that three of Denver’s first five games were televised to a national audience? Los Angeles is scoring 2.8 points per drive in the first half, one of the highest marks in the NFL. They have struggled to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks with pass rusher Joey Bosa out with a groin injury, and their pressure rate of 19.6 percent These are small sample sizes, but the league as a whole is 74 for 99 in converting these situations (75 percent), giving this prop some promise. Denver is scoring a below-average 1.7 points per drive in the first half. (The league average is 18 percent.) The Broncos boast the The Chargers running back has been on the upswing over the past few games: His rushing yard totals have gone from five to 60 to 173 over the past three weeks. The Chargers are in slightly better shape but have been without star wide receiver Keenan Allen since their season opener, when the five-time Pro Bowl pick suffered a hamstring injury. Both teams’ practice reports over the past few days have been littered with players who aren’t officially out but have missed practices or were limited during the run-up to Monday night’s game.

Chargers-Broncos matchups: Austin Ekeler is enjoying a season breakout, while L.A.'s uneven defense goes up against a struggling Russell Wilson.

Broncos vs. Chargers: 5 things Denver fans should know before 'MNF' (Broncos Wire)

This is a hard one to predict – on the one hand, I think the Chargers offense should be able to move the ball because of the talent on that side of the ball. I think the Chargers’ defense should be able to keep the Broncos’ offense from finding a rhythm they haven’t had all season. If Williams is blanketed all game, I’d think Carter would be the one to step up operating out of the slot. and Bryce Callahan have both been stellar to start the year, but the Chargers linebackers have struggled in zone coverage underneath and both they and the safety not named Derwin James have had issues tackling. Most of the criticism seems to stem from Staley’s decision to go for it on 4th and 2 against Cleveland last week, but I think the process in going for it was correct on that play. Kelley should solidly be the #2 on Monday as well as going forward.

He plays a vital role as a communicator and leader along the offensive front. The week before, Staley made the same decision in a similar situation in Houston. Chargers linebacker Drue Tranquill sacked Russell Wilson on third down to give Herbert and the Chargers a final chance to win it in regulation. The offense picked up the first down in that case and then put the game away. Justin Herbert and offense managed to get all the way to the Denver 12-yard line before another pass was batted down by the Broncos defense which forced yet another field goal. Former fifth-round pick Brenden Jaimes was slotted in at center and did his best to keep up with the intimidating Broncos front. The Chargers forced the Broncos to go three-and-out to begin the second half which helped give the offense some much-needed momentum. Russell Wilson's struggles with Broncos one of NFL's big mysteries (Los Angeles Times)

Russell Wilson couldn't muster anything for the Denver Broncos in overtime against the Chargers. So what's going on with the nine-time Pro Bowl player?

The Broncos dropped to 2-4 and have lost three in a row. The Broncos had a 13-10 lead after two quarters but failed to pull away in the second half. It was Tranquill’s second sack of the night — you might say Denver’s offense was tranquilized — and the fourth by the Chargers. “They started to pick up the pressure for sure in the second half,” Broncos running back Latavius Murray said. That’s what Hackett seemed to be doing with Wilson to this point, keeping him in the pocket to go through his progressions and make those anticipatory throws. He came into Monday’s game with four touchdown passes, the fewest through five games in his career. As longtime quarterback expert Rick Neuheisel puts it, asking Wilson to stay put is like asking Rembrandt to paint between the lines. At his best, Wilson is like the Sundance Kid. “We’ve got to answer the call. This one started with such promise for the Broncos. The Chargers have done this before. The payoff is huge, and all you have to do is look around and see how many people are running versions of it now.'' To handle the level of detail, you have to think before you play, so when you play you know.'' You have to drill it a million times because every time the defensive front moves, all my footwork, all my takeoff points are different for each of those. If done properly, the running backs will have three choices -- called "bounce'' (outside), "bang'' (cut upfield) or "bend" (cut back across the formation) -- to find the best running lane. Overall, the Broncos' offense has scored 16 or fewer points in four of five games, and they're tied for 30th in scoring, 30th on third-down conversions and last in red zone offense. With Hackett serving as his offensive coordinator, [Aaron Rodgers](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/8439/aaron-rodgers) had nine games with either one or no touchdown passes, as well as four games when he didn't complete 60% of his passes, even as the team rolled to a 13-3 finish. "For me, that was the hardest thing, the little adjustments for everybody, in those concepts. "I always [like] to put formations to plays, the personnel that was in the game at that moment, when I was working through things,'' Elway said. It was also the start of a coaching tree that eventually branched out to include Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco, Matt LaFleur in Green Bay, Sean McVay in Los Angeles and Mike McDaniel in Miami. "I even came into it, my first year in the scheme, having been exposed to some of the components of it at Stanford a little bit, and when I was with [Jim] Fassel when Wade [Phillips] was the [Broncos'] head coach,'' Elway said. That exists in everything you do, no matter what offense you're in, but in the version of this scheme we ran, those initial games it really struck me how much of an adjustment it was for all 11 guys.'' He brought in the playbook that Hackett and so many others have built on since.

Los Angeles Chargers vs Denver Broncos final score: Bolts win on ... (Bolts from the Blue)

Another ugly game for the Chargers, but the Bolts pulled off a win in LA.

He waited to be blocked by a player in front of the player catching the ball, then pushed that player directly into the returner to cause a muffed punt. On the punt back, Ja’Sir Taylor had the best special teams play by a Chargers player in a long time. Drue Tranquill had a perfectly timed and perfectly executed blitz up the middle to force the punt. The game winning drive attempt got off to a slow start that ate up a lot of clock for not a lot of yardage initially. Things basically stalled there and the Chargers wound up having to settle to play overtime football. It was really the first time all season they’ve come out stronger after halftime and that was good to see.

Dustin Hopkins kicked four field goals, including a 39-yarder with 2:38 remaining in overtime, and the Los Angeles Chargers rallied for a 19-16 victory.

The teams traded field goals in the fourth quarter. The Broncos were not content to run out the clock though. The touchdown was the Broncos’ first in nearly 88 minutes of play. Following a Denver three-and-out, Los Angeles evened it at 10-10 on Hopkins’ 37-yard field goal with 53 seconds remaining in the half. It was recovered by Deane Leonard at the Denver 28-yard line. They are tied with Kansas City atop the AFC West.

The Los Angeles Chargers have now won three straight games after defeating the Denver Broncos on "Monday Night Football."

The referees called a tight game on both sides. Mack had a sack and a pass deflection in the first half. The Broncos finished 0-for-1 in the red zone. "We have to play sharper, find ways to make plays, find ways to continue to get first downs and touchdowns." Broncos cornerback Damarri Mathis had a forgettable night. "They try to keep a roof on the coverage. His first incompletion didn’t come until midway through the second quarter. The rest of the game was a different story. He was inaccurate and looked out of sorts. Denver went into Week 6 with the worst red zone offense in the NFL. "It feels good to come through for the guys." Mack was disruptive rushing the passer.

After a Baron Browning interception — and fumble and fumble recovery on the same play — in the third quarter, the Broncos' offense could not punch the ball in for a touchdown and settled for a 13-10 lead. Denver, ultimately, could not find a way to turn dominant defensive play into a win. We've got to find ways to make plays, we've got to find ways to continue to get first downs, touchdowns. We've got to answer the call. In the second quarter, the Broncos responded to a 15-play Chargers touchdown drive by going three-and-out. We've got to play sharper. It starts with me as a coach, going to all the other coaches and then the players. We had some opportunities there, and we've got to execute at a higher level. We had that fluke play at the end, but right before that play, we still felt like we could have won the game. The end of the first quarter and the second quarter to get all the way down there. "Something's obviously not going right and we need to find a way to fix it. "We don't have division in our locker room," the quarterback said. It's the fewest points per game through six games by a Denver team since 2006 (13.2), when Jake Plummer was under center.

Hackett's side of the football, which he was brought into to improve, is one of the league's worst offenses, and his questionable play calls in crucial moments are deflating. There would be no revenge game Monday night for Broncos running back Melvin Gordon against the Chargers, his former team of five years.

Since then, Williams has gone down with a [torn ACL](https://www.nfl.com/news/broncos-rb-javonte-williams-suffered-torn-acl-vs-raiders-out-for-rest-of-season), and unless this was only Hackett's attempt to reverse Denver's season-long scuffle on offense by trying something new, Gordon looks to have plummeted down the new pecking order. "I don't know," Gordon offered Condon about a possible explanation for the benching. His third carry, another 2-yarder, accounted for the entirety of Denver's running game on its first possession. He only had one carry, but he did place second on the team with four targets. "You know, [the Chargers] threw up the little clown logo on my face [on the video board], and I noticed it all. Broncos Player Grades for Week 6's Overtime Loss to Chargers (Sports Illustrated)

Unfortunately, that has been their passing offense this season. The Chargers showed exactly why the Broncos can't count on that model for success. With poor ...

Two of the penalties shouldn't have been called, as they were just excellent coverage and the rookie got hit with a bogus flag. Thanks to a miscommunication by the Chargers' offensive line, the rookie got his first career sack. He also has done a good job with his reps of getting after the quarterback, adding three pressures, with one being a quarterback hit. Williams did a good job last year as a depth rotational piece on the line, and that might be where he belongs. There isn't much speed to his game, but if Denver sticks with inside runs, Murray is a good fit to continue to be the top guy. Fleming also did well as a run blocker, as he has most of the season, except when he is asked to move outside. His play as a run defender, taking on blocks and closing his lanes, helped the run defense unit as a whole. Murray is a strong runner, which is a good fit to fill in for Javonte Williams. His play in coverage was good enough to earn the highest grade on defense, but issues elsewhere dropped him, though he still had a great game overall. Wilson wants to be a pocket passer, but that isn't what he is, and it's past time for him to give it up. Getting the right guard back was great for the Broncos but it didn't lead to a significant improvement from the line in general. As a result, he can play more freely by reading what is in front of him and reacting.
