Insider: 4 reasons the Colts pulled out a season-saving 34-27 victory ... (The Indianapolis Star)

INDIANAPOLIS — Matt Ryan came up big again. Facing a fourth-quarter deficit, Ryan led the Colts on a game-winning drive and hit Alec Pierce for the ...

Alternating running backs, Jacksonville ripped through the Indianapolis defense for 248 yards on 32 carries, averaging a remarkable 7.8 yards per carry. Indianapolis entered Sunday’s game allowing just 3.4 yards per carry, the second-best mark in the NFL. that got Indianapolis into field goal range, before firing the key 32-yard touchdown pass to Pierce. But in 2022, the responsibility has largely fallen on an offensive line that hasn’t been able to find the right personnel combination or any kind of a rhythm so far this season. Ryan responded, completing 42 (a Colts record) of 58 throws for 357 yards and two touchdowns. He called a pass play and trusted Matt Ryan to make the right decision, rather than taking the sack and knocking kicker Chase McLaughlin out of field goal range.

Colt veteran OT Dennis Kelly comes off bench and holds Jaguars ... (The Indianapolis Star)

INDIANAPOLIS -- Coming off the bench and getting thrown directly into the fire that is an NFL game is nothing new for veteran Colts offensive tackle Dennis ...

we played a lot of games together and obviously at (the offensive line) you have to have so much camaraderie and so much continuity that if you throw in new pieces all the time its tough," center Ryan Kelly said. Kelly signed with his hometown Colts to be a swing tackle, but Rainmann and Matt Pryor's struggles left an opening at the crucial spot on the line. Ryan isn't the most graceful outside of the pocket, but he showed the ability to dissect a defense when given time. With the offensive line finally finding a rhythm, Strausser told Reich to leave the 11-year veteran in the game. With Kelly protecting quarterback Matt Ryan's blindside, the Colts did not surrender a sack on 58 pass attempts. The Colts put together a 13-play scoring drive on Kelly's first series, ending with a Chase McLaughlin field goal.

Inside Alec Pierce's Game-Winning Touchdown vs. Jaguars: Why ... (Colts.com)

Facing a third-and-13 with 23 seconds left, the Colts got the coverage they wanted – so Matt Ryan and Alec Pierce went and won the game.

With good leverage, all he had to do was find the ball and make a play. "Didn't really try to do too much on the release — just knew he was going to be playing the sticks and not really expecting it. Pierce got a step on Griffin and sensed the Jaguars cornerback was in panic mode. I said, 'If Alec is pressed, you can take him on a go-route or you can take him on, like, a quick slant.' There was never any question it was going to be go the whole time." "That last third down, the catch — they came in an overload front, which that got us beat the first time we played them, and we stuffed it," Kelly said. But the Colts figured they'd get a single-high safety and loaded box with Jacksonville trying to generate a negative play to make a McLaughlin's kick even longer. Wayne previously told Pierce to fight through contact instead of trying to run around the corner in front of him, then gave him that "be patient" hand signal. And Pierce dunked on Griffin to haul in the game-winning 32-yard touchdown with 23 seconds left, earning the Colts a 34-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. "What happens is a lot of times, guys just try and rush the release. The mentality. Facing a third-and-13 at the 32-yard line with the Jaguars up by a point, the Colts could've played things conservatively to make sure Chase McLaughlin could kick the game-winning field goal. Pierce fought through a bit of contact – another coaching point of Wayne's – and got the clean outside release the Colts needed.

Colts made a Jaguars rookie eat his words in Sunday's game (Horseshoe Heroes)

The Indianapolis Colts recorded a big win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday and they also made a rookie look silly in the process.

With him in the pocket, Walker said the Jaguars like that and concluded his statement with, “we gone have some fun.” Unfortunately for Walker and Jacksonville, they didn’t have any fun. Walker and the Jaguars didn’t back this talk up. For that reason, the Jaguars’ defense had some confidence entering this game and they let it be known leading up to the second matchup. In that game, not only was the offense shutout but Matt Ryan was sacked five times and threw three interceptions. Offensively, it was a much different game than the Week 2 matchup that the [Colts lost 24-0](https://horseshoeheroes.com/2022/09/18/3-reasons-colts-embarrassed-jacksonville-jaguars/). 5 Things Learned, Colts vs. Jaguars Week 6 (Colts.com)

The Colts beat the Jacksonville Jaguars, 34-27, on Sunday to improve to 3-2-1 on the season.

Punt Speed brought down Etienne two yards beyond the line of scrimmage, forcing a turnover on downs the Colts' offense converted into a 66-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. He continues to demonstrate that week to week when he gets his opportunities." At the snap, Lawrence took off to his right with Etienne sprinting a few yards behind him – a classic speed option. That formation was a tell the Jaguars might try to run the ball with Lawrence, who was effective with the ball in his hands on Sunday (six carries, 23 yards, two touchdowns). On a fourth-and-one on the Colts' 32-yard line late in the third quarter, the Jaguars lined up in a pistol formation with running back Travis Etienne Jr. The Colts have believed for months that their offensive weapons were not lacking. Jelani Woods caught his third touchdown of the season and added a 17-yard reception that sparked the Colts' first scoring drive, too. Even without running backs Jonathan Taylor (ankle) and Nyheim Hines (concussion), there was no part of Sunday's game where you were longing for more offensive weapons on the field. "The quick game really becomes your running game," head coach Frank Reich said. So that was step one toward neutralizing a Jaguars pass rush that sacked Ryan five times and hit him seven times in the Colts' 24-0 Week 2 loss. "And it forces them not to be able to sub a lot."

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly From the Jaguars' Week 6 Loss to ... (Sports Illustrated)

But, they still lost. In a game where the Jaguars badly needed to find a win to get their 2022 back on track, the Jaguars fell 34-27 to the Indianapolis Colts, ...

Griffin made a couple of nice plays in coverage and tackles near the line of scrimmage as well, but his bad plays outweighed the good. The most concerning thing about the Jaguars' defense on Sunday was the lack of adjustments from the unit. The Jaguars had two different third-downs where they stopped the Colts but kept the offense on the field due to penalties: one pass interference on Shaquill Griffin and one roughing the passer on Travon Walker. Griffin had his worst game as a Jaguar, allowing nine catches for 108 yards and the game-winning touchdown and also being called for pass interference twice. Trevor Lawrence had zero turnover-worthy plays according to Pro Football Focus, his first game this year without a single play where he put the ball in harm's way. On his 12 touches, three of them went for 20 yards or more, giving him three of the Jaguars' four longest plays of the game.

Colts Head Coach Frank Reich Conference Call (Stampede Blue)

Few Frank Reich call notes: -Keke Coutee (concussion) likely out this week -Julian Blackmon was more 'in case of emergency' yesterday. Didn't progress fully ...

Reich spoke about the Colts offense and how they used no huddle play calls to speed up things on offense and the positive outing the offense had because of it. That limits the number of formations you can use which then condenses the playbook— Stephen Holder (@HolderStephen) Reich went on to talk about free safety Julian Blackmon who was not ruled out of the game but didn’t play any snaps on the day. Coutee is in the league's concussion protocol and likely out this week while he recovers. Frank Reich opened his media conference call by giving updates on some of the team's injured players. Colts' Snap Counts: Week 6 vs. Jaguars (Stampede Blue)

But Sunday’s performance offered a glimpse into what the offense could look like when the team avoids careless mistakes and provides adequate protection along the offensive line. There were concerns about the level of production the Colts’ offense had over the first five weeks. Parris Campbell had seven receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown, and tight ends Kylen Granson Granson (four receptions, 38 yards) and Jelani Woods (27 yards and a touchdown) also played a significant role in Indianapolis’ success on offense.

Colts' Pass-Heavy Gameplan Worked Wonders vs Jacksonville (Sports Illustrated)

Head Coach Frank Reich spoke after the team's ugly win against the Denver Broncos last Thursday Night. When asked about the state of the Colts' offense, Reich ...

The goal is to be more efficient on first and second down, and the Colts were not getting that out of their run game. The Colts gained three or more yards on 53% of their early down passing attempts, and that even factors in the few incomplete passes that netted zero yards. The Colts also were sticking with the run game on these early downs, rushing the ball on 40% of their first and second down plays in those two games. Effectively, the Colts were continually running into a brick wall and setting up their already struggling passing game in second or third and long situations. In those two weeks, the Colts ran the ball 43 times (out of 107 opportunities) on first or second down. "We have to be more productive on first down and second down to stay in phase and I just think that’s going to go a long way to solving some of the issues that we’re having."

The Colts put wide receiver Ashton Dulin on the injured reserve list, and he can’t be activated until Week 10 at the earliest. Obviously, a tough hit, a tough concussion. He was able to walk off the field under his own power with the guidance of the training staff and was ruled out shortly after that.
