That game also included goals from Oskar Sundqvist and Michael Rasmussen (plus an assist from Sundqvist on the other goal), who are now linemates with Friday’s man of the match, 6-foot-8 rookie Elmer Söderblom. After their back-to-back, the Wings return home for a visit from former assistant coach Todd McLellan and his L.A. Red Wings followed Derek Lalonde's script with 'complete game' (mlive.com)

DETROIT – Derek Lalonde couldn't have penned a better script for his NHL head-coaching debut. The same could be said for Elmer Soderblom's first game in the ...

Said Soderblom: “I want to play with the puck and be able to protect it, shield it, and do stuff with the puck. “We played a great game, 60 minutes,” Husso said. Said Lalonde: “That was the vision of putting that line together. “For the most part we made it comfortable for him. That’s going to be our goal going forward.” At 6-8, Soderblom is the tallest player in Red Wings history. They form what is quite possibly the biggest line in NHL history. “I’ve probably been asked throughout the (preseason), have you had that wow moment, and I said I’ll hopefully have that wow moment when we win,” Lalonde said. You worry a little bit about the psyche of playing well and not getting rewarded with the outcome. He didn’t get lost in coverage at times, either through the neutral zone or the D-zone, which he did a little bit in exhibition. Parents Martin and Susanne arrived from Sweden this week to watch his debut. Many things Lalonde stressed in preseason came to fruition.

About Last Night: Size matters for Red Wings in 3-0 win over Habs (Montreal Gazette)

A pair of 6-foot-6 giants for the Detroit Red Wings made life difficult for the Montreal Canadiens in a 3-0 Wings win Friday night at Little Caesars Arena.

At one point, longtime Liveblog commenter Carin Latzel apologized for a quiet peanut gallery. Although Montreal’s inexperienced defence held their own after a rough first period, one goal was all Detroit needed on the night, and they got it from their twin behemoths. Montreal general manager Kent Hughes emphasized size and speed when he acquired Kirby Dach in the offseason, and Detroit’s victory on Friday showed why it helps to be big in this league. The Canadiens pressed, but couldn’t solve Husso. It was an occasionally chippy affair: even former teammates Ben Chiarot and Brendan Gallagher couldn’t help but exchange shoves in the heat of battle. Already down Mike Matheson and Joel Edmundson for the foreseeable future, the left side of Montreal’s defence could hardly bear another loss, so fans held their collective breath when Kaiden Guhle exited the game in the first period.

The Daily: Newsy Won Again in Red Wings-Canadiens Game, 88 ... (Detroit Hockey Now)

The Red Wings got a win for Newsy Lalonde, but the Grand Rapids Griffins were taking it on the chin from San Diego in their AHL opener.

The Red Wings were whipping up on the Canadiens. However, the Grand Rapids Griffins were taking a whipping on home ice. Jack Adams was behind the Detroit bench that night. It was fitting because the previous time Newsy Lalonde was coaching an NHL game in Detroit, it was also involving the Canadiens. Fittingly, it was a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in Detroit’s season opener.

Canadiens @ Red Wings recap: Detroit spoils a Jake Allen ... (Habs Eyes on the Prize)

The Habs goalie put forth an incredible effort, but it wasn't enough on Friday night.

Husso’s glove was quicker than the Habs’ chances along the goal line to deny Montreal a first goal of their own. Soderblom’s big frame was too much in front of the net and his first NHL goal opened the scoring in the game. The Montreal chances for counter-attacks were few and far between while the Red Wings owned the puck, but a quick transition by Jake Evans forced the Wings to haul down a wide-open Rem Pitlick to put Montreal on their first power play of the night. Just as the Habs were beginning to generate some offensive pressure, Josh Anderson was called for interference, putting the Habs back on the penalty kill. A couple of big saves from Allen kept the game scoreless, but the Detroit pressure forced Arber Xhekaj into a penalty, and the Habs to the game’s first penalty kill. While there were some wobbles in the debut game, the Habs stuck with the same lineup that brought them a win, with the only difference being Sean Monahan listed as a centre as opposed to a winger, swapping with Kirby Dach.
