Johnson will finally be tested and he’ll come away victorious with his first interception of the year and the fourth game in a row the Bears get a pick. Charles Leno Jr., a longtime stalwart of the Bears offensive line returns to Soldier Field for the first time since he was released from the Bears during the 2021 offseason. Even with his solid campaign last year, Kmet didn’t find the endzone once in 2021 and it’s been more of the same to start this season. He also posted a quarterback rating of over 100 for the first time in his career. This will be Fields’ first game on short rest, and he won’t have as much time to prepare for his opponent. The Commanders are riding a four-game losing streak after their only victory of the season came in Week 1.

The Washington Commanders are 1-4 and at the bottom of the NFC East. The Bears are a rebuilding team that’s looking for building-block players. He said everyone is moving forward with the next game on Thursday against the Bears. It’ll be another Thursday night game between two struggling offenses as the Broncos and Colts failed to score a touchdown last Thursday. It was receiver N’Keal Harry’s turn to play 20 questions with the media Wednesday in the Bears locker room at Halas Hall. NFL owners have no plans to vote on the future of Commanders owner Dan Snyder at next week’s league meeting, according to a league source. And his name has been at the center of trade talks. We got to make sure we come down and tackle and not get back so they don’t have a third-and-short or whatever the case may be.” But on the ground, they’ve given up eight touchdowns and 850 yards on the ground through five weeks. The Bears' last home win against the Commanders came in 2003. The Commanders, meanwhile, are having quarterback issues of their own, as Carson Wentz is no longer looking like the quarterback we saw in Week 1 against the Jaguars. Thursday Night Football: Commanders visit Bears and all we're ... (Deadspin)

This week is a real treat on Thursday Night Football, with the Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears squaring off in a battle of sub-.500 teams in prime ...

But seriously, America loves its NFL football, so there’s bound to be some sort of audience — even with a matchup as undesirable as this one. And for those who don’t have Amazon Prime, you might be jumping over to one of those boats anyway. The Grizzlies and Pistons are playing tonight, followed by the Thunder and Spurs. [dirt](https://sports.yahoo.com/commanders-owner-claims-to-have-dirt-that-could-blow-up-the-nfl-165657241.html) on “several NFL owners” that could blow up the league. All the Commanders and Bears need to do is produce one TD and not force the viewing public to hang around any longer than possible. [orange helmets](https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/chicago-bears-orange-helmets/le4qjs6micm0jfrwg7w9elfy) — or perhaps, you’ll tune in because you placed a wager on the game — there’s not much of a reason to watch this far from must-see TV matchup. Washington is in last place in the surprisingly strong (besides the Commanders) NFC East, while Chicago sits in third place in the NFC Central, one game ahead of perennial bottom dwellers, the Detroit Lions. Part of that is due to quarterback Justin Fields’ ability to escape the pocket and make plays with his legs, although, it seems like those are the only plays he’s been able to make consistently. Last week, the Colts beat the Broncos, 12-9, in an overtime yawnfest. Unfortunately for the team, that hasn’t translated into wins so far through the first quarter of the season. With Prime Day coming to an end, you may have been disappointed not to score some big deal on a new TV. Rivera later apologized to Wentz and said they are “ready to roll.”

2022 NFL season, Week 6: What We Learned from Commanders ... (NFL.com)

Carson Wentz, Brian Robinson and the Commanders edged Justin Fields and the Bears, 12-7, on Thursday night.

But no one can say with a straight face that this is the offensive formula the team wanted before the season, not with the receivers they have and with the price the Commanders paid to land Wentz, who was 12-of-20 passing for 99 yards in the win. With the run game working fairly well, it made sense to lean on it and sprinkle in a few high-percentage passes when the game tilted Washington’s way. He was hit 12 times in the pocket, with five resulting in sacks, and that doesn’t count the number of times he was hit on 12 rushing attempts. McKissic](https://www.nfl.com/players/j-d-mckissic/), plus a surprise cameo from [Antonio Gibson](https://www.nfl.com/players/antonio-gibson-2/)-- who had four carries for 32 yards (all in the third quarter) -- and Washington grinded its way to a short-week road win. The next best number of wins without a loss is 2-0. But his overall refinement as a QB needs a lot of work; the execution on Chicago’s penultimate drive is good evidence of that. [Darnell Mooney](https://www.nfl.com/players/darnell-mooney/)’s fourth-down catch ruled down at the Washington 1-yard line. On the next Bears series, they drove to the 1, and Fields’ overthrow to a wide-open Ryan Griffin on second and goal was far more egregious an error than [Khalil Herbert](https://www.nfl.com/players/khalil-herbert/)getting stuffed at the goal line on fourth down. But he also misfired on throws and was at least partially guilty of once again holding on to the ball too long. Throw in a few nice runs each from [Terry McLaurin](https://www.nfl.com/players/carson-wentz/)and [J.D. But a fumble on a punt return that allowed Washington to recover the ball at the Chicago 6-yard line and score two plays later -- after a muffed punt against the Giants with two minutes to play squashed any realistic chance of a comeback -- will force the Bears to reconsider who they have deep on punt return. Bears fall to Commanders in low-scoring affair | Game Recap (ChicagoBears.com)

The Bears couldn't overcome a multitude of mistakes Thursday night, including a pair of costly turnovers and no points on three red-zone possessions, ...

After a pair of incomplete passes, the Bears elected to go for it on fourth-and-11, but a delay of game penalty made it fourth-and-16. On second-and-9, Fields snapped the ball quickly to catch the Commanders with 12 men on the field, then delivered a perfect deep ball to Pettis in the back of the end zone. On the Bears following drive, an illegal use of hands penalty on cornerback Benjamin St-Juste sustained the possession after Fields was sacked on third-and-5. After the Bears defense forced a three-and-out, Jones muffed the ensuing punt and Washington recovered the fumble at Chicago's 6-yard line. The following Bears' possession resulted in a turnover on downs after Fields overthrew tight end [Ryan Griffin](/team/players-roster/ryan-griffin/) in the end zone on third-and-goal from the 1 and running back Khalil Herbert was stopped short on fourth-and-goal. Running back Antonio Gibson accounted for 43 of the 65 yards on the 13-play drive. [Velus Jones Jr.](/team/players-roster/velus-jones/) muffed a punt at the Bears' 6. After the Bears got the ball back at their own 30, Herbert evaded defenders and broke free for a 64-yard run to reach the Washington 6. [Justin Fields](/team/players-roster/justin-fields/) scrambled 39 yards down the left side of the field to reach Washington's 5. On third-and-goal from the 10, tackle The game's first score didn't come until 46 seconds before halftime when Slye made a 38-yard field goal to put the Commanders up 3-0. While the Bears didn't score until the third quarter, they had two red-zone opportunities in the first half.

Justin Fields, Bears fall inches short of win vs. Commanders (Chicago Sun-Times)

The Bears quarterback took a significant step backward on national television in a 12-7 loss to the lowly Commanders on Thursday night at Soldier Field.

For me, the ability to take the ball and drive it down at the very end, to give us a chance to win it, that to me is what was the improvement.” The Bears went for it on fourth-and-16 and Fields threw incomplete to Smith-Marsette, who was running across the field well short of the first down marker. The Bears went for it and handed to Herbert — who was stuffed at the line. The Bears were back in the red zone quickly, thanks to running back Khalil Herbert, who took a handoff on the first play of the next drive and zig-zagged up the field for a thrilling 64-yard run. With about three minutes left in the first quarter, the Bears had second-and-goal at the 5. He broke inward off the line of scrimmage as if he were running a slant, planted his left foot and broke back toward the right pylon.

The final play of the game saw Fields go to Darnell Mooney, but he caught the ball just inches short of the goal line. This will be the Bears’ third and final prime-time game of the 2022 NFL season. The Bears had a chance to win it in the red zone, but Darnell Mooney failed to haul in the touchdown pass. Justin Fields has done well with running the ball, too, as he led the team with 88 yards on 12 carries. The Bears held a 7-6 lead with eight minutes left in the game when Jones muffed a punt on Chicago’s 9-yard line. The Bears offense struggled from the start, and there wasn’t much to write home about in Thursday’s loss.

Christian Holmes recovered a muffed punt deep in Chicago territory to set up a one-yard touchdown run by Brian Robinson midway through the fourth quarter.

He was intercepted once but also threw the only passing touchdown of the game with a 40-yard bomb to Pettis. Then a leaping Darnell Mooney was knocked out of bounds by Benjamin St-Juste inches shy of the goalline as he hauled in a pass to effectively end the game. Carson Wentz overthrew Curtis Samuel in the back of the end zone on the two-point conversion attempt, and Joey Slye missed a 48-yard field goal wide left with 1:48 remaining. On Chicago’s final drive of the night, Justin Fields broke off a 39-yard run to the five. “I really wanted to be back around my team,” said the rookie running back after the game. There was also no shortage of drama down the stretch.

Studs and duds from Bears' Week 6 loss vs. Commanders (Chicago Bears Wire)

From Dante Pettis to Velus Jones, we're taking a look at the studs and duds in the Bears' Week 6 loss to the Commanders.

For the second time in three games, the Bears red zone offense stumbled — and was ultimately the reason they lost. This is still a young group, but they kept their struggling offense in this game until the end. On the few occasions that Fields was rolled out of the pocket, it was evident that he was more effective. That included a 40-yard touchdown reception in the corner of the end zone — Chicago’s only points of the night. [getting blown up by Carson Wentz](https://bearswire.usatoday.com/lists/bears-commanders-twitter-reacts-to-carson-wentzs-block-on-roquan-smith/), Smith actually had a solid game for the Bears. After all, if they do get “there,” it isn’t exactly a rebuild anymore, is it? After a 2-1 start to the season, Chicago has lost three straight games and is staring at a 2-4 record. Fields is in a pivotal second season, where he has no help along the offensive line or at wide receiver. Me personally, I’m tired of being almost there.” Live and you learn, and get back to next week and keep going, keep getting better.” And the frustration is wearing on Fields, who’s becoming impatient for these hard-fought performances to turn into wins. Tired of being just this close. “Everybody is feeling this way. It’s no secret that the Chicago Bears are in the midst of a rebuild.

It was an excellent throw, both in terms of Fields’ accuracy and his recognition that he had a free play because the Commanders had too many men on the field, but there haven’t been enough of them. Maybe the Bears will fix some of this — merely being watchable would be an upgrade — but that requires a lot of trust. And as a first-time general manager and coach, Poles and Eberflus aren’t entitled to that. This was his sixth game in the system, and he has been working on it in practice for months. Fields was 14-for-27 passes for 190 yards with a touchdown and an interception for a 71.5 rating. With clearer perspective, it would only be significant if it was a gradual step toward something much better.

The Morning After...the Bears' frustrating loss vs. Commanders in ... (Chicago Bears Wire)

For the third straight game, the Bears fumbled away their chance at victory. And for the second time in three weeks, it was rookie Velus Jones muffing a punt.

Bad teams have to play mistake-free football, and the Bears didn’t. There are so many gaps on offense, and at this rate, I’m not sure the team can rebuild fast enough for Justin to reach his full potential. I could be a prisoner of the moment, but I don’t remember another Bears game that was served up on a platter for an easy victory that wound up being a loss. Washington is a bad football team, and Chicago turned the ball over twice, resulting in points lost or a Commanders’ score. In the two games he was under 50% passing, they won. Their three trips into the redzone resulted in a pick off a helmet, a stuffed run at the one-yard line, and a catch that was an inch short of the goal line. It was once again the offense that cost them this game, as they scored just seven points and went 0-for-3 in the red zone. But the turning point was the fumble by Velus Jones Jr. But the Bears might have finally reached rock bottom following a 12-7 loss to a really bad Commanders team, a game they essentially gave away. muff his second punt in three games — sacrificing the team’s one-point lead — but Chicago came up just one inch short of a comeback win. And for the second time in three weeks, it was rookie Velus Jones muffing a punt. Instead, the Bears once again shot them in the foot and reminded us just how ugly things can get this season.

Chicago Bears fall inches short of a Thursday night victory (Da Windy City)

The Chicago Bears fell just short of a huge Thursday night victory as they were defeated by the Washington Commanders in front of America.

There was one big problem in the game and that was the fact that Fields was on his back a lot. It is also nice that the defense only allowed 12 points. It was a free play because of the 12 men on the field penalty that the Commanders were taking and Fields didn’t miss on it. They got to the red zone but failed to convert on fourth and goal. It is strange that their defense only allowed 12 to a bad Commanders team and they still lost. With the Bears holding the lead, the rookie needed to make the smart play, plant his heels at the 10, and not bring disaster into play. Pass interference penalties on Johnson and Kyler Gordon allowed the Commanders to get on the board with a field goal before halftime. The offensive line struggled to get a consistent push in the run game, but Herbert and Fields notched explosive runs. But he overthrew his tight end, and the Bears would end up turning the ball over on downs. There was bad: The interception in the red zone when Fields threw a ball off the facemask of Washington defensive lineman Efe Obada. The wind was whipping off the lake. Instead, Jones was out there trying to field a punt he misjudged inside the 10 with the Bears leading by a point in the fourth quarter. Countdown to the draft and free agency has begun and this time there is no excuse for Ryan Poles to avoid receiver and offensive line help. He let two hit the ground that should have been caught and had another he called fair catch on when he had clear sailing ahead for 10 yards at the least. He had no business trying to field the muffed punt inside the 10 to begin with. The average isn't great, and they leaked at a bad time in the game, when Washington was trying to kill the clock, but they ultimately got it done. He should have told Eberflus to pull the punt returner. Washington had 359 passing yards its previous game and had no plays longer than 18 yards Monday night while the Bears had six plays longer than the Commanders' longest play. It's hard to believe they couldn't have used N'Keal Harry in the red zone to at least jump up for a pass one of the three times they were inside the 10-yard line but he was left inactive after they brought him off injured reserve. A total of 128 yards on 28 carries by backs says the Bears solidified the run defense. Again a bit deceiving in the numbers as 40 of Fields' 190 passing yards came on the one throw for a TD to Pettis. A total of 64 of those yards came on one run by Khalil Herbert. If they had assessed properly the first time, they wouldn't have had Velus Jones Jr.

Chicago Bears: This offensive stat should make you feel better (Da Windy City)

With the nice mix of David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert on the ground as well, it was a well-balanced rushing attack. The Chicago Bears had a lot of yards on ...

The 428 yards is a great stat to build on but they need more points. It’s not star-level stuff yet but it is a big step in the right direction. Fields also had 88 yards using his legs so it was a very productive game for him on the ground. They had some near misses in the endzone as well but that doesn’t help you win games. One of the biggest pros is that Justin Fields is starting to take some steps. Despite it only leading to seven points, they had 428 total yards on offense.

Commanders end losing streak, hold off Bears with defensive stand (The Washington Post)

CHICAGO — Carson Wentz turned quickly to unleash a pass as the Chicago Bears' rush barreled toward him. Time has typically been limited behind the ...

Veteran Antonio Gibson didn’t play at all in the first quarter and was used in a dual role as a back and returner, running back one kick for 27 yards. The young man doesn’t deserve to have that all the time.” Chicago was flagged twice in three plays, setting up a 38-yard field goal by Joey Slye for the first points of the game. According to the report, Snyder told some confidants that he used private investigators to gather dirt on fellow team owners and Commissioner Roger Goodell. “Just my feeling,” Al Michaels said on the broadcast, “I think what the league would love is for Snyder to sell the team. Not have to go to a vote but just sell the team. It wasn’t until late in the third quarter that Washington finally cracked the Bears’ red zone. They took the lead on a muffed Bears punt in the fourth quarter but nearly threw it away with a missed field goal and a 39-yard run by Chicago quarterback Justin Fields. The worst offense in the NFL outgained Washington, 202 yards to 88, at the half. The second time was on a 40-yard touchdown pass by Fields. The Commanders were flagged not once for having 12 men on the field but twice. But this time, Washington added a new wrinkle, a method of personal defeat: having too many men on the field.

8 takeaways from the Bears' pitiful loss to the Commanders (Chicago Bears Wire)

The Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders met up at a windy and blustery Soldier Field on Thursday night, their first matchup in The Windy City since 2016. It ...

Players continued to develop and the front office pinpointed areas of concern in the offseason and the Bears built a team that went to the postseason in consecutive years. But for now, this is what we have to look forward to for the rest of the season. He had nowhere to go but down and the Bears decided sticking with him would have been a better play than acquiring picks for the future. Just a reminder that Robert Quinn was never going to come close to replicating his 2021 success and that the team should have pushed harder to move him in the offseason. The result was a 5-11 season that had fans questioning where this team was going. This time, it gave the Commanders a very short field that led to their only touchdown of the night. But the Bears still forged ahead with trying to convert and a pass from Fields to Smith-Marsette was dropped, giving Washington the ball inside Bears territory with a chance to end the game or at the very least go up by eight points. Eberflus should have called for the punt team and forced Washington to move the ball deep in their own territory. The decision to sign low-risk players was understandable given the uncertainty this new regime had about the team as a whole. We’re six games into the 2022 NFL season and it’s very clear Fields doesn’t have the help or support he needs to progress as a quarterback. This loss to the Commanders was one of the worst games in recent memory for the Bears. All of that was on display when the Commanders defeated the Bears 12-7.

Every Chicago Bears Starter That Will Likely Be Gone Next Year (sportsmockery.com)

GM Ryan Poles made it clear he intended to rip this thing down to the studs and rebuild. It wasn't what anybody wanted after such glittering promise in 2018, ...

The Bears need more playmakers at the position. Angelo Blackson – Defensive tackle is by far the biggest weakness of the Chicago Bears defense. It would not be a surprise if the If that keeps up, the Bears GM may have to seek an alternate strategy. Mustipher was never supposed to be the starting center. David Montgomery – The running back has been a steady presence in an otherwise stormtossed time for the Bears offense. His recent knee injury and advancing age make his future on the team questionable. He just can’t reliably catch the football. The bar for Poles at tight end is Travis Kelce. GM Ryan Poles made it clear he intended to rip this thing down to the studs and rebuild. The Bears would secure $5.8 million in additional cap space by either cutting or trading him.
