We've tested the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4090 Amp Extreme Airo, a hefty custom version of Nvidia's top Ada Lovelace GPU.

Not that these make up for the RTX 4090 struggling with 1440p elsewhere. The same was true in Watch Dogs Legion, where adding Ultra-quality RT effects dropped the RTX 4090 from 84fps to 58fps and the RTX 3090 Ti from 70fps to 39fps. This is less of a problem when the same games run drastically faster at native resolution, which gives them enough of a lead that the RTX 3090 Ti can’t catch up even with the power of upscaling. Shadow of the Tomb Raider also saw a big jump, from 75fps on the RTX 3090 Ti (on the Highest preset with SMAA x4 anti-aliasing) to 125fps on the RTX 4090. 1440p isn’t exactly where the RTX 4090 sees itself in five years, but then why is it sometimes slower than the RTX 3090 Ti at this res? 163fps in Forza Horizon 4 isn’t just merely 4fps faster than it was at 4K, but it’s 16fps slower than the RTX 3090 Ti managed with the same Ultra settings. On Ultra quality, the RTX 4090 cruised to 100fps, a 40fps advantage over the RTX 3090 Ti. Without these features, the RTX 4090 averaged 108fps, beating the RTX 3090 Ti’s 89fps by a similar proportion. Thanks to the higher-end GPUs in the RTX 30 and AMD Radeon RX 6000 series, you already have a range of graphics card options for hitting 60fps at 4K without sacrificing much in terms of settings quality. A small overclock, but then remember that the RTX 3090 Ti has about 5,600 fewer CUDA cores, and only boosted them to 1860MHz at stock. Zotac’s Trinity model is another 4090 identical to the 4090 FE in price and clock speed. Unlike other vendors, MSI’s highest-end Suprim X Liquid is watercooled, though it also has a fan on the card itself, presumably to keep the memory from overheating. Compared to the Gaming OC, it seems to have a pretty similar cooler, so it might be worth saving a $100 by opting for the cheaper Windforce version. On eBay, some scalpers are already attempting to sell the RTX 4090 from $2,200 to $3,499 or more. However, the supplies for the RTX 4090 quickly ran out as the minutes ticked by. Through Newegg, we managed to reach the final stage of the checkout process for several models of the RTX 4090 during the 6 a.m. This helped some customers nab the RTX 4090, likely ahead of the others. Many models for the RTX 4090 —which starts at $1,599— went out of stock minutes after going up for sale on Newegg and Best Buy at 9 a.m. The product was listed as “Coming Soon” when we visited the product page at 6:01 a.m.

But this is the final product (after two years of performance patches that have helped Cyberpunk get here) with its full potential unlocked by the 4090. The new graphics card is a monster, and I had to see for my own eyes what it was actually capable of to get what all the fuss was about. Without question, it’s easy the best Cyberpunk 2077 has already looked, a rare game these days that was designed to test maxed out PCs, and now, cutting edge graphics cards, it seems. For most people, it won’t be, but the 4090 does seem like it’s putting out a performance jump that’s well beyond past generational leaps between cards. But you can see what it’s doing here, and the vibe I kept getting with this Cyberpunk footage is like one of those E3 trailers that looks too good to be true and you know the final product won’t look like that. So, the Colorful RTX 4090 Battle Ax is still essentially an RTX 4090, and that means it's a mighty powerful graphics card. That is one of the stand out features of the Ada GPUs, and could be the thing that saves the RTX 4080s from looking so much weaker by comparison. The Colorful is the coolest-running, though also the slowest, which means its power draw is also low by comparison. But only by a fractional amount, and it is still monumentally faster than the RTX 3090 that came before it. Nvidia's engineers crafted the AD102 to deal with a huge amount of power going through its 4N transistors, to the point that it's able to hit an average 2,716MHz in our testing. This Colorful board, however, is sporting a 14+3 power phase design, which might explain why we're only seeing an average 2,577MHz in the test rig. When it comes to luxury, the last thing I want it to be is menacing. The power side of things is where it looks a little different, however. All those specs would have you expecting the Colorful card to surpass the RTX 4090 Founders Edition in the benchmarking stakes. Now, I know some manufacturers would still call that 'overclocked' so kudos to Colorful for not spouting that line in any of its marketing around the card. The amount of aluminium in that heatsink array, poking out from beneath the triple fan shroud, points to the latent power inside this thing.
