Lightning drop season opener to Rangers 3-1 (NBC2 News)

Mika Zibanejad helped the New York Rangers get the new season off to a winning start against the Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday night.

Vasilevskiy stopped a shot by Goodrow with a little more than 11 minutes remaining in the first. Vasilevskiy then slid over and denied Kreider’s attempt on the follow. However, seconds after Vasilevskiy stopped two short-handed slap shots by Chris Kreider, Zibanejad skated in from the right side, got around the goalie’s poke check and lifted a backhander into the top left corner at 3:25 to put the Rangers up 1-0, according to “Special teams was the difference,” Cooper said. Tampa Bay had a 5-on-3 advantage for 2 minutes when K’Andre Miller (tripping) and Goodrow (elbowing) were whistled for penalties with about 12 minutes remaining in the middle period. “We did a good job tonight, and we have to keep doing that.”

On the final three kills, however, the Lightning went 3-1 on face-offs. That's a fair representation of how the game was played when the teams were at even strength. They ended Lightning plays in the New York defensive zone and avoided turnovers. And they scored the eventual winning goal on a power play of their own. They successfully killed off three Lightning power plays in the third. But in the third period, the Rangers pulled away - and not just on the scoreboard.

A LIGHTNING STRIKE: RANGERS TOP BOLTS IN SEASON OPENER (Bluelinestation.com)

Mika Zibanejad potted two goals and Igor Shesterkin made 26 saves as the New York Rangers began the 2022-23 campaign with a 3-1 win over Tampa.

It was a clinical display, as the team seemed ready to embrace the lofty expectations rather than shy away from them. In my letter to all of you, I touched upon how the players embodied the mantra the social media team set before them, and it doesn’t appear to be any different this year. Whether it was scoring goals, clearing pucks, or blocking shots, the team portrayed a purposeful defensive outlook, contrary to last season when Igor Shesterkin carried the load. When a team takes six penalties in a contest, you wouldn’t expect to be the one emerging victorious. Season-openers are nothing more than first impressions, as each team begins anew with a record of 0-0-0. The shakeup on the second power-play unit featured Zac Jones, Trouba, Kaapo Kakko, and Alexi.

We know the top-four but Zac Jones was solid in his 13:31 of ice time and didn’t look overwhelmed at all by the moment. Alexis Lafreniere moved up to the second line and shifted to the right side to replace Kravtsov. While it’s only one game, given the past difficulties with draws, winning 64% of faceoffs is something we are not use to seeing. His power play goal came on a great seam pass leading to the one timer. The chemistry between Zibanejad and Chris Kreider was noticeable, as usual. Lineup: Sammy Blais missed the game with his upper body injury while Dryden Hunt was the healthy scratch.

Rangers vs. Lightning: What a way to kick off the show (Blueshirt Banter)

From a kid's perspective, I thought things got jumbled almost right away because of the Vitali Kravtsov injury, but we still got a good look at everyone else.

- Trocheck is going to be such a good fit for this team, by the way. - I know he got an assist on the Barclay Goodrow goal, but I thought Ryan Carpenter was very solid in his first game as a Ranger. I have no earthly idea how the officials could go from calling nothing in the first period (more to the Lightning’s benefit), to the incredibly rare double penalty on the same shift to create a 5-on-3, to every penalty under the sun in the third. - What is there really to say about Zibanejad aside from the fact that he’s a monster and very clearly wants to rectify what happened last year? I know his contract’s length isn’t great, but there was not a better fit for what the Rangers needed than Trocheck, and I think he’s going to be the oil that keeps the machine running most night. He won’t get an assist for it, but he did a really good job keeping separation on the 2-on-1 that led to Mika Zibanejad’s gorgeous first goal of the night shorthanded. I’m very excited to see what he brings to the table on a night-in-night-out basis. - I would love to tell you that has to be one of the worst officiated games that will happen this year, but we all know that’s not true. There is a genuine sense of this unfinished business chip on the team’s shoulder, and the organization really leaned into it last night — in a good way. Same goes for Kreider who I thought was one of the Rangers’ best forwards all night despite not scoring on two prime opportunities. My god, I can’t remember a game that thoroughly dominated in a long, long time. - There is something to be said for opening nights, specifically those that come after big events — be it offseason moves or a successful season.

Three rings make for great persuasion, especially in a clubhouse that lacks a common denominator, not to mention a leader. As it was, the ball bounced away and Bochy took a forearm to the jaw for his trouble. [Click or tap here to sign up for our Rangers newsletter.](https://dallasnews.activehosted.com/f/41) All were MLB rookies when it came to managing, and it’s time for Young to bring the streak to an end. Rose, who never took an uncertain step in his life, hightailed it around second and third and still would have been out by 10 feet had the throw been two feet longer or Bochy taken two steps forward. Baseball in 1988 was still more than a decade removed from “Moneyball” and had a chip on its shoulder the size of the Rock of Gibraltar when it came to anything new. The testimony galled Valentine to no end, and he confided as much one day in his office. In either case, Bochy might have withstood Rose’s charge and the Astros might have held their series lead. Looking for someone genuine to energize a clubhouse worn down by the Machiavellian Buck Showalter, Jon Daniels plucked Ron Washington out of obscurity. Baseball is at a crossroads with managers of a certain age. Of course, there was a time when many thought it curious, at best, that a pitching coach had his flock throw footballs in the outfield. Josh Hamilton in his prime was worth three of any current Rangers.

Rangers vs Liverpool: how to watch on TV, stream online in US/UK ... (AS English)

Rangers are still looking for their first point and first goal in this season's Champions League. They take on last year's finalists at Ibrox tonight.

Midfielder Glen Kamara is reported to be carrying a knock and his fitness will be assessed on the day of the game. The Welsh winger is expected to be out for a while, possibly returning in the New Year. Following every move in the VAR room, will be video assistant referee Matej Jug. Nevertheless, the battle for the top two places remains open and the Reds’ chance of progressing will hinge on their final two games - away to Ajax and at home to Napoli. Luis Díaz also faces a lengthy stretch on the sidelines recovering from a knee injury which he sustained in the weekend defeat at Arsenal. In defence, Klopp is missing a number of first team regulars - Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold were also injured in the Arsenal game. But it’s been a different story altogether in the Champions League - three defeats from three games has left the Scottish side bottom of Group A on zero points and without even having scored in the competition. Mirren will have kept spirits up within the side and they will have vociferous home support behind them against Liverpool but if the truth be told Van Bronckhorst’s troops have looked out of their depth in Europe’s blue ribbon club competition. The German coach is as baffled as anyone as to why his side have entered a bizarre downward spiral which has left them well off the pace in the league. Mid-table in 10th, it will be extremely difficult if not impossible now for them to claw their way back into the title race. We’ll be building up to kick-off from an hour before with team news, stats and analysis. If they lose to Klopp’s team and Ajax beat Napoli, their European adventure will effectively be over.

Braden Schneider-Zac Jones pairing already earning Rangers' trust (New York Post)

On opening night Tuesday with the Blueshirts holding a 3-1 lead over Tampa Bay with four minutes to go, here came the Jones-Schneider pair over the boards ...

“I want to pressure guys more and to cut down the time they have,” No. They’re excited to play with each other, they take pride in that, and it’s the same with these kids. “It’s funny that we talk about our young players all the time but we never mention Schneider,” Gallant said. I get constant feedback from the coaches and it comes in the form of both you could do better and what you’re doing well. “I had played 20-something games, so it wasn’t new, but there definitely were some opening night jitters at the start before I settled in and it felt like a normal game.” “You see him going into the corner battling with Patty Maroon and that just lifts me to see that. The improvement in both of those areas was apparent against Tampa Bay. We want to grow, we want to get better, but I thought the first game went really well,” That was representative of the night for the Rangers’ third tandem, who in 11:31 of work limited the Lightning to seven attempts and just three shots on goal while owning a 50.82 xGF rating. They moved the puck out of danger, got it up the ice and rarely faced sustained pressure. The Blueshirts, of course, had their say in the match game at the Garden. Jones, who earned his spot following a competition including Libor Hajek and Matt Robertson, had 22 games of previous NHL experience over the past two seasons for the Blueshirts.
