Colorado Avalanche raise Stanley Cup banner before opener (ESPN)

Prior to their season opener against the Chicago Blackhawks, the Colorado Avalanche saw the franchise's third Stanley Cup banner raised to the rafters on ...

It was able to rehearse one more time Wednesday afternoon a few hours after the Blackhawks concluded their morning skate. NHL chief content officer Steve Mayer told ESPN Wednesday that it was an easy decision for the league to reach out to Blink-182 after seeing how much of a connection that Avalanche fans had with the song. Johnston said his team immediately went to work after the Avs won the Stanley Cup. "It turned out today not all the band members could be here," Mayer said. Mayer said the league had a previous relationship with the band, and that it was instantly on board until the travel issues paused the plans. "It's going to be cool to take it all in," Newhook said before the game. Hoppus said he did not get a chance to watch the Avalanche's entire playoff run. It continued when the players arrived at the arena and then took part in a ceremony that saw them walk down a red carpet surrounded by fans. He remained on the bench for the majority of the ceremony before taking his place with his former teammates. He then set the trophy down before joining his teammates so they could get in position to watch the banner go into the rafters. Wednesday brought an end to that drought, with the team raising the third championship banner in franchise history at Ball Arena. The crowd sang as the arena video board played a montage of fans celebrating the team's championship.

Colorado Avalanche are trying something unconventional on power ... (Mile High Hockey)

Most teams usually only have one defenseman on the power play, the Avs will try playing three of them.

This is also just a short-term lineup until Gabriel Landeskog returns, then Bednar almost surely will have to kick one of his three talented defensemen off the second power-play unit—unless this really works. There’s a lot of excitement around the potential of this group, but it must be acknowledged that part of what makes this so fascinating is its unconventionality. [famously](https://flamesnation.ca/news/remember-that-time-brent-sutter-put-5-defencemen-on-the-power-play) put five defensemen out on the power play once, but that was a message to his team and it wasn’t a positive one. All three defensemen have complementary skill sets, and the power play is more about fitting a specific role than playing a fixed position. This sounds like the kind of thing some rebuilding team with nothing to lose who is very thin with forwards would experiment with, but it just goes to demonstrate the embarrassment of riches the Avs have at defense. That weapon of mass destruction will very likely remain unchanged from last season, save for shuffling around the Gabriel Landeskog injury.

It was [a] really cool moment, like the video they did and obviously, the banner raise was he cherry on top, so really, really cool moment.” They were magnificent, save for a brief lapse on a penalty-kill in the first period. That’s probably going to be the case on a few more nights in his Avalanche career. For the aging, scandal-plagued Blackhawks organization, they were like the Washington Generals against the Globetrotters. Artturi Lehkonen scored twice on the power play in the second period and Valeri Nichushkin added another as part a dominant first two periods, with Colorado owning a 22-10 shot edge. New goalie Alexandar Georgiev didn’t have to do much in getting the win. That was a root beer float on a 98-degree day.

The banner was unveiled, and the players watched with their arms around each other, including Blackhawks defenseman Jack Johnson, a member of the Avalanche last season. It feels like you just got done playing, and all of a sudden, you're back at training camp. "It was awesome," said forward Andrew Cogliano, who scored the opening goal at 13:44 of the first period. I know those guys got their rings the other night too, so it's exciting times for them, and they're probably reliving a lot of moments, so it's tough to kind of put that in the past and jump into another season." When the Avalanche arrived for the morning skate Wednesday, they found themselves in a renovated dressing room complex under the stands at Ball Arena.
