After all the meet-cutes, much of the rest of the pilot is dedicated to explaining who everyone is and what’s going on. • John says that a man he never met handed him Henry’s letter with the key and then “disappeared — like, vanished,” but the interaction happened offscreen. It wasn’t until the writers brought in more hunters, supernatural allies, and foes (and occasionally both) in later seasons that it was able to write its own mythology and find firm footing in the world it created. (I implore anyone feeling nostalgic for the Supernatural pilot to revisit Sam’s five-minute monologue explaining the entire series’ premise to the audience.) This is where The Winchesters does a better job of world-building than its predecessor and where it starts to establish itself as its own show. There’s so much going on in this pilot that it’s hard to keep track of all the bread crumbs. The now-non-possessed Ada directs Mary and her crew to Savannah to continue the search for Samuel, and John follows along, right into the next episode. It takes John about 0.02 seconds to accept that demons exist, which saves everyone a lot of exposition and brings us right into the meat of the complicated plot. [Men of Letters](https://supernatural.fandom.com/wiki/Men_of_Letters), a secret and extinct society of supernatural knowledge-keepers that plays a big role in the original series. That man appears to be hunter Samuel Campbell, Sam and Dean’s grandpa, and when we meet his daughter, Mary (Meg Donnelly), on the other side of the credits, he has been missing for a few days. The pilot cold-opens on a graveyard in New Orleans, where a man dressed like Indiana Jones runs into trouble with some kind of monster. There’s no evidence of that yet in The Winchesters, which dives right into the action.

If you're a Supernatural fan, how do you think they're doing with the storytelling so far with John and Mary? But if you are a Supernatural fan, the series is a breath of fresh air from what we watched for 15 seasons. As I said before, you don't have to have seen Supernatural in order to watch The Winchesters, as everything you need to know is pretty much explained in the first episode, which is nice. The Winchesters is the first spin-off of Supernatural to go to series after backdoor pilots for Supernatural: Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters failed. The bunker that is found turns out to be a Men of Letters bunker, though different from the one that was a prominent home for the Winchester brothers in the later seasons of the original series. The thing that is also great about The Winchesters is that you don't have to have any knowledge of Supernatural in order to be a fan or enjoy it. And of course, we can't forget about the Baby appearance, as the car has been a character in the original series as long as Sam and Dean. The two of them are a force to be reckoned with, and it's nice to be following a team of hunters this time around. The first episode introduces you to all the important characters and even tells you a little backstory. But this story, as different as it is, is so fresh and new and still keeps you glued to the screen. The series premiere of The Winchesters is here, and it was nothing short of the supernatural. Like a lot of fans, I was weary with how they would tell John and Mary's story since what was shown on Supernatural is different from the prequel series.

Mary only gives it to him as they’re setting out to find Ada Monroe ( [Demetria McKinney](https://www.tvinsider.com/people/demetria-mckinney/)), a lead in what happened to her dad. But first, John has to be introduced to the world of demons and monsters, which is exactly what happens after he comes home from the war in 1972. He crosses paths with Mary, first outside the movie theater, then as he’s looking for answers about his dad (Gil McKinney’s Henry — Supernatural fans know what happened to him) and a demon finds him.

He's particularly dedicated to being respectful of what has come before, and has helped get Dean's voice correct in the voiceovers. There will be a monster of the week. "This show is an opportunity to say, okay, what is the generational trauma she was dealing with? What was the reason she wanted to get out of hunting? This is a supernatural love story, and things don't usually go all that well on the show we know as Supernatural. "But at the same time, when we see the Thompson says that episode will "show all of our cards" in terms of how the writers are making sure that the prequel fits cleanly within the history that the show has established. "We're not necessarily being totally covert about where Dean is in the timeline. "We have to make sure that what we are doing does not upend or undo 15 years of Supernatural. TV Guide got on the phone with showrunner Robbie Thompson to find out what we're in for as the first season continues. From there, John and Mary headed out on the road to chase the clues left behind by Mary's dad, and ended up in a monster fight underneath a cemetery with some assistance from Mary's friends Latika (Nida Khurshid) and Carlos (Jojo Fleites). So look for news about The Winchesters Season 2 in the coming months. And if the news is good, look for the new season at/around September or October 2023. Every season premiered in either September or October (just like The Winchesters) and ended in May or April. As of the season premiere, The CW has neither renewed nor canceled The Winchesters. Season 1 was still filming when the first few episodes started airing on The CW. They aren't even together yet at the start of season 1, so that leaves room for a lot of stories about their adventures and romance.

La Brea (3.5 mil/0.4) was steady, but New Amsterdam (1.6 mil/0.2) slipped to a demo low and its second-smallest audience ever. Bachelor in Paradise (2 mil/0.5) was steady week-to-week, while The Rookie: Feds (1.54 mil/0.2) slipped for a second straight week since its launch. FBI (7.1 mil/0.5), International (6 mil/0.4) and Most Wanted (5.2 mil/0.4) all were up in audience versus last week’s early numbers, though down in the demo. The Live+Same Day numbers reported in our ratings column do not reflect a show’s overall performance, given the increased use of delayed playback via DVR and streaming platforms, plus out-of-home viewing. A roar sounds and Mary and John find themselves face to face with a loup-garou. Mary reveals to John that Maggie was her 18yo cousin who got killed by a vampire on a hunt and that she wants out of the life. Pouring a salt circle around the demon, Carlos hands John a piece of paper and tells him to read it. Samuel found the information in a Men of Letters space in Savannah. Mary puts Lata on the case of opening the box, despite her wanting to tag along (squeamishness aside), while she and John set off for Texas. It was a letter from his dad, Henry, stating that if he was getting the letter he was gone and to go to the address where they were. Mary picks a lock and finds the schematics for the box she was looking for, saying that she needs to find an Ada Monroe who was working with her dad before he disappeared. The two make a pit stop at the library where they meet Mary’s friend, Latika (Lata), to stock up on knowledge and supplies. Mary parks her car only to have John bring her a coffee. With John out of the way, Mary throws the demon into a vat of holy water while questioning where her father is. Outside a movie theater, John bumps into Mary Campbell and knocks all of her stuff down. After jolting awake, he pulls out a letter with his name on it and the aquarian star logo.
