The Astros were the better team during the regular season, as they won an AL-best 106 games and finished 16 games ahead of the Mariners. [Houston Astros](https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/HOU/houston-astros/) and [Seattle Mariners](https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/SEA/seattle-mariners/) are set to meet Tuesday afternoon in Game 1 of the best-of-five American League Division Series at Minute Maid Park, home of the Astros. Across the way, Gilbert during the regular season faced Houston four times, and over those 25 innings he pitched to a 2.52 ERA with no unearned runs allowed and 22 strikeouts/six unintentional walks. In the regular season, the Astros went 12-7 against Seattle and out-scored them by a tally of 73-65 in those games. As for the Mariners, they earned a wild-card berth (and their first postseason bid since 2001) and advanced to the second round with a two-game sweep over the [Toronto Blue Jays](https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/TOR/toronto-blue-jays/) in the Wild Card Series. Now, let's get to the important stuff for Game 1.

Mariners fans celebrated the wild comeback win in Toronto ... (The Seattle Times)

If you were dancing when the Mariners took down the Blue Jays on Saturday, you weren't alone. You just may not have been caught on camera at work like these ...

Baseball has been in the family for a while and I’ve always gone to games ever since I was a little kid. “I think it was a combination of multiple things. “All I remember was celebrating and then once I saw the video, I just thought it was hilarious. This season, the 25-year-old claims to have been to at least one game in every home series that the Mariners have played. It was a wise decision in hindsight, as the Mariners roared back from a seven-run deficit to send fans across the Pacific Northwest into near hysterics. After a few seconds, Phillips skips into frame from over in the sales department, and joins in the fun.

Three Things That Will Decide Who Wins the Astros-Mariners ALDS (Sports Illustrated)

Houston is the best AL team in the MLB postseason. Seattle is the best story. There's a lot at stake in this Division Series matchup between AL West foes.

• Seattle has more than enough offensive firepower to get it done, but it will be a tall task against a unit that had the fourth-fewest blown saves (16) on the season. What makes Houston’s bullpen so lethal is the bevy of reliable options. The Astros had the lowest bullpen ERA (2.80) in the majors this season, never running out of electric arms to enter the game in the most crucial situations. Of course, Alvarez is not the only problem Seattle’s pitchers will have to face this week—he’s just the biggest. He finished the season on a tear as well, posting a 1.118 OPS with six home runs and 18 extra-base hits since the start of September. In short, no, because nobody has contained Alvarez this season. If it’s not Ray, then it likely would be George Kirby who gets the nod. But reigning Cy Young winner Robbie Ray faltered against the Blue Jays on Saturday, and he was wobbly down the stretch in September. At stake is a sixth straight ALCS appearance for Houston, while Seattle is searching for its first since 2001 and fourth in franchise history. Seattle will face presumed AL Cy Young Award favorite Justin Verlander in Game 1 of the series, with talented righthander Logan Gilbert opposing him. Worse, he was absolutely shelled in three outings against the Astros this season, giving up 13 runs across 10 ⅔ innings with seven walks and six homers allowed.

Houston Astros already lead Seattle Mariners… in retractable roof ... (FOX Weather)

The matchup this week between the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners in the American League Division Series isn't just between AL West foes, it's between ...

With the forecast calling for dry and pleasant conditions in Seattle over the weekend when the series shifts back to the Northwest, you can be near certain T-Mobile's roof will be open – boding well for the home team. Perhaps it's for good reason, the Astros have a .507 winning percentage with the roof open versus a .561 winning percentage with the roof closed. But likely contrary to popular belief, their roof spends most of the year collecting dust. So you can imagine the excitement when plans came together for a retractable roof stadium that would allow outdoor baseball. The decision appears weather-independent, but it may be a fortuitous decision for Tuesday's game anyway. [the Astros played just three games with the roof open](https://astrosroof.mlblogs.com/archive/2022/10) -- two in April and Sept.

'Mariners will need the mojo to win this series,' legendary ... (MyNorthwest.com)

"New York" Vinnie Richichi has fond memories of the Mariners, past and future, as the team prepares for their matchup against Houston.

I want to think and I want to feel the Mariners have the Mojo, the baseball Gods on their side. And in a short series, the pitching is really going to help you out a lot. As a matter of fact, we were all in Anaheim on the final night of the final weekend of the season, not even really knowing where the Mariners were going to go. So the fan in me says the Mariners will win, but the baseball observer, the media guy in me says that the Astros will prevail here.” If another team won we would have had to go to another place. And finally, on that final day of the season in Anaheim, they found out that we were going to go to Cleveland, and play the Indians in the first round. They hit a really rough spot toward the end of the year, where we weren’t even sure if they were going to make the playoffs. Vinnie as a host of Mariners pre and post-game shows on the Mariners radio network and KIRO AM and FM. If this team won, we would have had to go somewhere else. And that was also the year that Alex Rodriguez said that I brought him good luck. And that’s where we and everybody in the club had to scramble to get there.” [“New York” Vinnie Richichi](https://www.linkedin.com/in/new-york-vinnie-richichi-30b18010) is a legendary broadcaster from the ’90s and early 2000s.

2022 ALDS Series Poll: Seattle Mariners vs Houston Astros (The Crawfish Boxes)

The Astros (AL #1 Seed) begin their 2022 Postseason journey with a familiar foe as they face off against the Mariners (AL #5 Seed) in a best-of-5.

If the Mariners can take a late lead, expect to see him against the heart of the lineup at some point as well as [Paul Sewald](https://www.mlb.com/player/paul-sewald-623149), who has a majority of Seattle’s saves this season. [Mariners](https://www.mlb.com/mariners/stats/), [Astros](https://www.mlb.com/astros/stats/) [Mariners](https://www.mlb.com/mariners/stats/pitching), [Astros](https://www.mlb.com/astros/stats/pitching) Either way, this looks to be a fun series if you can stand the pressure of October baseball. Crawford](https://www.mlb.com/player/j-p-crawford-641487) provided the late-game bloop-double that tied up the score in Game 2 while rookie phenom [Julio Rodriguez](https://www.mlb.com/player/julio-rodriguez-677594) and catcher [Cal Raleigh](https://www.mlb.com/player/cal-raleigh-663728) had their fingerprints all over Game 1. [Justin Verlander](https://www.mlb.com/player/justin-verlander-434378), [Lance McCullers Jr.](https://www.mlb.com/player/lance-mccullers-jr-621121), and [Framber Valdez](https://www.mlb.com/player/framber-valdez-664285), it’s hard to see them rolling over for Seattle the way that Toronto did. Meanwhile, Seattle’s offense isn’t quite as long as the Astros’ even though Houston’s sluggers have taken a small step back this season. The M’s don’t slug quite as much as Houston, though, who collectively mashed 214 taters this season. Not only that, but thanks to a bye for the WC round, the Astros can set their rotation as they like after 5 days of rest. Still, if there’s one constant in the playoffs, it’s that the regular season doesn’t mean a whole hell of a lot once the calendar swaps over to October. That 2022 record shows just how much of the past that Seattle will need to erase if they wish to continue their march into October, especially when you look at how much trouble they’ve had in Space City itself. While that was good for one of the biggest comeback wins in playoff history, it shouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise considering that Seattle has had a reputation for late-inning heroics over the past two seasons.

It's cheaper to fly to Houston to see the Mariners than to see them in ... (The Seattle Times)

Tickets for the first Mariners home playoff game in 21 years are going for more than 28 times what it costs to see the Mariners open the ALDS in Houston.

Demand to see the Mariners in Game 3 has been orders of magnitude higher than it’s been to see the first two games in Houston, where the Astros are in the playoffs for the sixth-straight season and the seventh time in eight years. Houston has played 47 home playoff games since the Mariners last played one. (Some caveats apply here: At these prices you can’t afford a direct flight, or even a flight back on the weekend, so you’ll have to stay in Houston until Monday.) Game 1’s ninth-inning heartbreak may be impossible to stomach, but it didn’t dampen the sky-high demand to see the Mariners in their first home playoff game in 21 years on Saturday. Fly back on Monday, lay over again in Las Vegas, this time for 10 hours, arrive home Tuesday morning — $335 round trip. And that flight to Houston?

HOUSTON — The Mariners wanted a lefty-lefty matchup to face Houston's best offensive threat. Yordan Alvarez already had two hard hit balls and two RBIs.
