Oklahoma State scored over 40 points and beat Texas Tech by double digits, but the Cowboys weren't perfect. Tackling especially needs to be better.
But on OSUโs final possession of the game, with the Cowboys needing to melt the clock and the Red Raiders expecting the run, OSU was at its most effective. After the Red Raiders scored on the opening possession of the game, the Cowboys got the ball at the Texas Tech 34-yard line after a failed onside kick. Green caught the ball short of the goal line but carried a defender the last 5 yards, used the defender to keep himself from hitting the turf, then rolled over the defender into the end zone. Martin and Collin Oliver brought down a running back short of the line to gain on fourth down. But [the Cowboys werenโt perfect](https://www.oklahoman.com/story/sports/college/cowboys/2022/10/09/oklahoma-state-football-cowboys-outslug-texas-tech-to-remain-unbeaten/69540997007/). The shortest field OSU had all afternoon came after Mason Cobbโs interception, and even though the Cowboys got the ball at the Red Raider 19, OSU had to settle for a field goal. After Tom Hutton pinned Texas Tech deep and the OSU defense forced a three-and-out, the Cowboys got the ball at their own 47. And two of the three were at or inside the 10. The Cowboys had need of lots of backups after being hit by a rash of injuries Saturday. That means the Cowboys were getting good pressure, and they were getting it in a variety of ways. And there are definitely some good ones after [a 41-31 victory against Texas Tech](https://www.oklahoman.com/story/sports/college/cowboys/2022/10/08/oklahoma-state-vs-texas-tech-football-score-live-updates-highlights-cowboys-red-raiders/69538762007/). The Cowboy defense was disruptive behind the line of scrimmage.
Even in Texas Tech's loss to Oklahoma State, quarterback Behren Morton looked in full control of the Red Raiders offense.
Granted, Morton suffered a blow to the ankle that hobbled him a bit, but it seems the Raiders traded a "slow start" for a stagnant finish. Whether it's Morton or Smith leading that unit, we likely won't know until Week 8 leading up to Tech's game with the Mountaineers. The sophomore's thrown 11 touchdowns, but also has seven interceptions to his name. "Behren knew early that if Donovan couldn't throw the ball the way we needed to, then we'd go with Behren." Prior to the game, there were rumors of a shoulder injury to usual starter Donovan Smith, but other contradicting reports denying the injury was the reason for the substitution also leaked out. Red Raiders coach Joey McGuire cleared up the confusion after the game.
Oklahoma State football coordinators Kasey Dunn and Derek Mason shared their thoughts and reactions to the 41-31 win against Texas Tech.
Oklahoma State figured out a solution and held Texas Tech scoreless on its final six drives, four of which ended in an interception or a turnover on downs. The Cowboys scored on eight of their 13 sustained offensive possessions, while the defense gave up nearly 530 yards of offense to the Red Raiders, who scored five of their first eight possessions in the game. โ While its offense was steady throughout, Oklahoma State football needed some adjustments defensively in the second half to help get past a pesky Texas Tech opponent on Saturday inside Boone Pickens Stadium.
The Red Raiders are tied with Central Michigan for the most fourth down attempts through six games, 25, with 14 conversions. Leading No. 7 Oklahoma State 7-0, ...
Though the Red Raiders grabbed the ball, they did not get to keep it. Having denied Texas Tech the opportunity to take a 14-0 lead, Oklahoma State took over at the Tech 34 and equalized the score two plays later, on a 32-yard toss from Spencer Sanders to Bryson Green. 7 Oklahoma State 7-0, the Red Raiders attempted, and momentarily recovered, a wonderfully executed onside kick.
Texas Tech football lost to Oklahoma State 41-31 on Saturday, October 9th, but I don't think the Red Raiders left Stillwater without some lessons learned.
In the Oklahoma State game, it happened again and Texas Tech didn't convert. In that Kansas State game, Joey McGuire went for it late and the Red Raiders didn't convert. Then late in the game, Texas Tech ran out of steam. A lot of that sentiment is because of the culture of Kansas State and Oklahoma State. The defense forced four punts and held the Cowboys in the red zone four times, but they'd convert on four of four field goals. For the third time, Texas Tech lost on the road.
