The score cut the lead to five and puts Miami in a position to get back ahead in the 2nd half. For the Dolphins, the second half needs to continue to be ball controlled and hard hitting defense. Still, the Dolphins have slowed their own offensive game plan down to give Thompson time to make quality decisions.

Breaking Down the Week 5 Dolphins-Jets Inactive Info (DolphinMaven)

The Miami Dolphins will have wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle against the New York Jets but cornerback Xavien Howard will be inactive.

His absence will mean a return to the lineup for fourth-year back Myles Gaskin. Crossen also could be in line to start with Howard out of the lineup. Also active will be cornerback Keion Crossen, who also was listed as questionable on the final injury report.

Miami Dolphins vs. New York Jets preview: Position by position look ... (The Phinsider)

Welcome to Who's Got The Edge, where I compare the Miami Dolphins to their next opponent and explain which matchups will decide the game.

Will the Dolphins improve to 4-1, or are the Jets ready to play spoiler? I expect more than a few turnovers from Wilson and the Jets on Sunday, and I believe it’ll cost New York the game. The Dolphins secondary has allowed the 2nd-most passing yards in the league so far, but I believe that’s more to do with the play-calling from defensive-coordinator Josh Boyer, rather than any limitations in the secondary. Miami has given up 1,197 passing yards so far this season (31st in the league), which shows how open this secondary can be at times. Again, neither group has been particularly great this season, but the Dolphins have more to show for it. Dolphins kicker Jason Sanders has started this season well, converting 11 of his 12 extra point attempts (91%) and 5 of his 6 field-goal attempts (83%). And although the Jets have had more success running the ball than the Dolphins, I believe that’s due to the talent of Michael Carter and Breece Hall, not necessarily the Jets’ offensive line. The Dolphins have allowed the 4th-least sacks this year, while the Jets rank 21st. The Dolphins have also only allowed 24 rushing first-downs, compared to the Jets’ 30. On the other hand, the Jets’ Tyler Conklin has started the season tremendously well, posting 21 catches (5th-most) for 192 yards (9th-most), and 1 touchdown. Miami’s offensive line keeps getting better every week, while the Jets’ offensive line has looked worse and worse with each passing game. Meanwhile, the Jets’ leading rushers Breece Hall and Michael Carter have put up 315 yards on just 75 carries (4.2 yards per carry) so far this season.

Teddy Bridgewater entered concussion protocol after one snap in the Miami Dolphins' loss to the New York Jets. Skylar Thompson replaced him at quarterback.

There’s a lot to learn from and grow from, which is the exciting part from my end.” I was able to see the defense and see what’s going on, be able to make different reads, put the ball where I wanted it to, but there’s a lot there [to improve].” If a player is diagnosed with ataxia — abnormality of balance/stability, motor coordination or dysfunctional speech caused by a neurological issue — he is prohibited from returning to the game. “Our whole team in general doesn’t look at it like we’re a one-man savior at any spot. In the span of 10 days, Thompson had gone from the Dolphins’ emergency quarterback, No. Thompson completed 19 of 33 pass attempts for 166 yards, threw an interception, was sacked twice and lost a fumble.

5 Instant Takeaways: Miami Dolphins lose to New York Jets, 40-17 (Palm Beach Post)

The Dolphins have lost two consecutive games after a 3-0 start. Now they're without Tagovailoa, Bridgewater, Armstead, Jackson, Howard and Jones.

Pro Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead left with a toe injury in the first half and did not return. On the play, Thompson was told to wave his arms and act as if he was having a hard time getting the play call in. [Palm Beach Post](https://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/dolphins/) part of the USA TODAY Florida Network. . Tyreek Hill was sent into the game as a punt returner at the end of the third quarter, with Miami trailing 19-17. In the first half on Sunday, Mostert rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown. Armstead protects the blind side for both Bridgewater and Thompson. And based on what we saw in the spring and summer, Thompson also appears to have been a wise draft pick. In general, the Dolphins' pass defense needs to improve. [Bridgewater, the Miami native](https://www.palmbeachpost.com/story/sports/nfl/2022/10/07/dolphins-quarterback-teddy-bridgewater-gives-miami-kids-hope/8190033001/), was relieved by rookie Skylar Thompson. It's possible veteran safety Eric Rowe was involved in the coverage mix-up. Left tackle Terron Armstead left and did not return with a toe injury. At the time, Miami was traliling 26-17.

The Miami Dolphins were defeated by the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. Here's how it happened.

Miami’s defense struggled at times early, but some of that had to do with being put in poor situations after Thompson threw an interception on the Dolphins’ side of the field. On the next drive, Miami lost left tackle Terron Armstead to the same toe injury that had been bothering him over the last couple of weeks. Sunday’s starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was called for an intentional ground in the end zone, resulting in a safety, on their first offensive play of the game.

The short-handed Miami Dolphins were not able to overcome the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium, falling 40-17 to their division foes.

Thompson nearly had his first career touchdown pass with a nine-yard throw to Mostert on the drive, but he stepped out just before breaking the pylon. Kicker Jason Sanders then nailed a 46-yard field goal that cut the Dolphins' deficit to two. As Thompson acclimated himself to Miami's offense, New York (3-2) capitalized on the Dolphins' offensive woes. When the Jets scored another touchdown, Thompson started to find his footing. With quarterback Tua Tagovailoa out due to injury, Teddy Bridgewater became the second Dolphin from Miami-Dade County to start at quarterback on Sunday, but it was short-lived. Miami Dolphins final score vs. New York Jets: Stock up, stock down ... (The Phinsider)

The Dolphins drop their Week 5 game to the Jets.

Stock Up: Myles Gaskin, running back - This is not a statement that Gaskin was dominating the game or anything, but the fact that Miami’s 2021 starting running back had been inactive the last several weeks, but worked back up to be on the active roster this week, then got in the game, is a sign his stock is up. A 19-for-33 day throwing for 166 yards with an interception and a 58.4 passer rating is the stat line of a rookie who did not expect to play, which is fine given that is exactly what Thompson is, but it is not the stat line of a player who should be starting over Bridgewater, as some have advocated - and especially not the stat line of a player who should be considered competition for Tua Tagovailoa’s spot. Left tackle Terron Armstead had played through a toe injury throughout much of the season, but had to leave the game with it in the first quarter. Stock Up: Raheem Mostert, running back - With a rookie quarterback in the game, Miami had to finally find a rushing attack this year. The Dolphins finished the game with 11 penalties, compared to the Jets’ five accepted flags. The Jets actually gave away more penalty yards (102 for Miami, 105 for the Jets), but the Dolphins kept either giving away a free first down or stalling out their own drives with the penalties. Injuries and penalties crushed the Dolphins throughout the day, and now they have to figure out how to fix it before they get back on the field in Week 6.

NFL concussion protocols are a joke unless you're the Miami Dolphins (PhinPhanatic)

Teddy Bridgewater was hit on the first play from scrimmage this afternoon. His day was over before it began. But he didn't have a concussion.

The UNC won’t have the guts to pull them out of the game if they clear. Today, the Dolphins were the ones who got the shaft, maybe a proverbial middle finger to the team that brought all this into the public. They should do away with the inactive list and allow all players to play instead of teams only being able to have a certain amount on the field.

The Jets were keeping receipts. That's what head coach Robert Saleh said, at least, after New York dropped its season opener, 24-9, to the Baltimore Ravens.

With the Giants improving to 4-1 and the Jets sitting at 3-2, things may be changing for the better in New York. The Jets figured out a way to win again in Week 5, scoring three rushing touchdowns and doing it with defense against the Dolphins. Wilson wasn’t overly efficient, completing just 50 percent of his throws, but the Jets got the win. They aren’t quite what the Jets were in the early years of the Rex Ryan era, but as a complete unit, they look competent for the first time in a long time. But things seem to be changing in Saleh’s second season leading the Jets. The Jets haven’t finished with a winning record since 2015, Todd Bowles’ first year as head coach, when they won 10 games but narrowly missed the postseason.

NFL Concussion Protocol change impacts Miami Dolphins, Teddy ... (The Phinsider)

Especially when the new protocols do not seem to be even applied across the entire league, where multiple players throughout the day on Sunday seemed to show signs of a concussion, were checked out, then cleared to return to the game. The new protocol was doing what was intended - keeping a player out of a game for a stumble, even if it had nothing to do with a concussion. The player replacing Tagovailoa was now out of the game because of ataxia. But keeping a healthy player out of a game, or potentially multiple games, because he stumbled on the field with no other symptoms would seem to be going too far in the name of caution. Four days later, Tagovailoa was again thrown to the turf, this time on a Thursday Night Football game, and this time he did sustain a concussion. Tagovailoa before the player was cleared to return to play. The Protocol exists to establish a high standard of concussion care for each player whereby every medical professional engages in a meaningful and rigorous examination of the player-patent. However, he was not cleared to return to the game because of a reported stumble. He doesn’t have any symptoms and he’s passed his evaluation, but under the new regulations, he’ll be in the concussion protocol moving forward.” Even with tight end Durham Smythe in the vicinity of the ball as it hit the ground, the ruling gave the Jets two free points on a safety and Miami had to kickoff to New York. Bridgewater would have to be checked for a head injury, which would seem to be a fine step in taking care of a player and his health. An independent athletic trainer working as a booth spotter at the game determined Bridgewater stumbled as he got up from the hit - never mind the simple fact that he just had a six-foot-three, 200-pound man spear him in the ribs and take him the ground, so maybe he was just getting up a little shaken up - and therefore the updated league concussion protocol, which went into effect on Sunday, was now in play.

The Dolphins' backup, Teddy Bridgewater, left the game with head and elbow injuries, leaving Skylar Thompson, a rookie, to finish.

Miami Dolphins struggle with New York Jets (News 13 Orlando)

Teddy Bridgewater was placed in concussion protocols as the Miami Dolphins stumbled against the New York Jets.

That came four days after Tagovailoa took a big hit against Buffalo that caused him to appear disoriented afterward and he stumbled as he tried to get to his feet, but later returned after clearing the NFL’s concussion protocol. Bridgewater was called for intentional grounding in the end zone on the play, resulting in a safety. “It was a little bit to take in.” Coach Mike McDaniel said Bridgewater doesn’t have any concussion symptoms and passed tests, but a spotter saw Bridgewater stumble — so he was removed from the game. We’re the Jets now. Wilson, Hall and Braxton Berrios also rushed for scores, sending the Jets to their first 3-2 start since 2017.

The Miami Dolphins took the trip up to the Meadowlands on Sunday, but fell in embarrassing fashion to the New York Jets. Here are ten game observations.

Miami’s offense finally had some semblance of a rhythm and had gotten down to the Jets’ 36-yard line and faced a 4th and 5. Jason Sanders missed a 54-yard field goal that would have put Miami ahead 20-19, and the decision to attempt the kick was questionable. Miami was already without both of their starting cornerbacks, and lost perhaps the most important piece on the entire offense in Terron Armstead, though for how long is unknown.

And Shell allowed seven pressures on 33 pass-blocking snaps, while right tackle Greg Little yielded five. At times, he held onto the ball too long. PFF blamed Rowe on Breece Hall’s 79-yard catch and run. Sieler has started four of five games this season. So did safety Jevon Holland and linebacker Jerome Baker. ▪ Quarterback Skylar Thompson, who replaced the injured Bridgewater after one play, was pressured on 18 of his 35 passing-play snaps and sacked twice and intercepted once. At safety, Brandon Jones played 57 of the 59 defensive snaps and Eric Rowe played only six. Receiver Tyreek Hill downplayed a foot injury sustained late in Sunday’s game. ▪ The Dolphins kept Tanner Conner active - ahead of Hunter Long, who was fully recovered from an ankle injury - and Conner played a career-high seven offensive snaps but dropped the first regular-season pass thrown to him. Mike Gesicki played 36 snaps but was targeted only twice and caught one for 30 yards. ▪ Running back: Myles Gaskin got his first playing time of the season, logging 13 snaps on offense to 10 for Chase Edmonds. Some notes on playing time and Pro Football Focus grades in the wake of Sunday’s 40-17 loss to the Jets:

Dolphins QB Situation Unsettled (Sports Illustrated)

The Miami Dolphins had a lot of questions and few answers at the quarterback position a day after their loss against the New York Jets.

"I didn't see him stumble, but I'm also not really in the business of grading and coaching spotters," he said. Twyman played collegiately at Pittsburgh, where he started all 13 games as a sophomore in 2019 and became the first interior lineman to lead Pitt in sacks (10.5) since Aaron Donald had 11.0 in 2013. "The one thing I do know is that he will do everything it takes to prepare to play in a football game. He also spent time on Miami’s practice squad in 2020 and 2021. And if and when he's called upon, I know he's going to put his best foot forward for himself and his teammates." "I would like to see when Teddy can practice, which is not up to necessarily us in general and then you know, once that happens, assess the situation, which is there's some compounding variables," McDaniel said.
