For the Detroit Lions, Sunday's game against the New England Patriots has a ton of stakes. A 1-4 start at the bye week would have many questioning whether ...
After being gifted a roughing the passer call and a new set of downs, the Lions had four shots at the end zone in a goal-to-go situation. Detroit, again, stood up after New England got in field goal range, but the Patriots pushed the lead to 19-0. The Patriots would add a field goal, but let’s be honest, you’re not reading this far anyways. But on a third-and-2, there was an awkward handoff between Goff and Reynolds, and the Lions back lost 7 yards on the play. With under two minutes remaining, the Patriots were able to move quickly downfield thanks, in part, to a pass interference penalty on Jeff Okudah that gave New England 22 free yards. Rather than try a 50-yard field goal with new kicker Michael Badgley, the Lions decided to go for it, and then this happened. Maurice Alexander tried to give the Lions a spark with a big 47-yard kick return after reversing field. Dan Campbell opted to go for it, and a fullback run with Jamaal Williams was stuffed for no gain, giving New England the ball on the Lions side of the field. The Patriots were unable to get another first down, but the play to Henry got them close enough to kick a 37-yard field goal. Hockenson, which allowed Jack Jones to anticipate the throw and step in front of it for the interception. Bailey Zappe quickly connected with tight end Hunter Henry for 23 yards after Saivion Smith immediately fell down with what appeared to be a serious injury on just the second defensive play of the game. Instead of making a statement and potentially taking some positive momentum into the bye, just about everything went wrong for the Lions in Foxborough.

St. The Lions signed wide receiver Maurice Alexander and cornerback AJ Parker to the active roster from the practice squad on Saturday and both are expected to see action today. In a rather surprising move, cornerback Amani Oruwariye is inactive as a healthy scratch. Starting guard Jonah Jackson is also active for the first time since suffering a finger injury between Weeks 1 & 2. He was limited in practice this week, but played through the injury last week and caught seven passes for 81 yards and a touchdown against the Seahawks. 1 in both scoring (35.0) and total offense (436.8).

Patriots 6, Lions 0. 10:37: Shotgun play-action pass from Zappe to an open Hunter Henry results in a 23-yard catch that puts the Patriots on the Lions 21 with 1st and 10. Patriots 16, Lions 0. Patriots 19, Lions 0. He becomes the first Patriots player to record a sack in each of the first five games. 14:05: A 47-yard kickoff return puts the Lions at their 47 to start the drive. 10:58: Goff looks to pass from the shotgun on 3rd and 7 but gets swarmed by the Patriots d-line. 3:55: Judon sacks Goff, forcing a fumble Kyle Dugger scoops it up and wins the footrace to the end zone for a Patriots touchdown. And that’s right after the Patriots were fortunate enough to recover their own fumble. Patriots 13, Lions 0. A Lions defender was there to snatch it and complete the takeaway. 3:57: A ten-yard completion from Zappe to Jakobi Meyers moves the Patriots past midfield.
Of course, New England will be without starting quarterback Mac Jones for the second straight game as he recovers from an ankle injury suffered in Week 3 ...
On the very next play, Stevenson broke off a 26-yard run to move New England into the red area. That was all for Detroit though, as they again failed to convert a fourth-down and handed the ball back to New England. Facing a first-and-20, New England ran with Stevenson to set up a field goal before the half. New England’s next drive started with a pair of penalties, as Lil’Jordan Humphrey’s false start backed them up before an illegal contact on Detroit gave the Patriots a first down. Backed up at their own three-yard line, New England got to work on the ground with Rhamondre Stevenson before Zappe found Jakobi Meyers for a 12-yard gain on third-down. Then, Bailey Zappe delivered his best ball of the day, finding Jakobi Meyers for a 24-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline. The Patriots two-minute offense got to work, as Zappe found Meyers for a 15-yard gain to start the drive. Looking for their first points of the afternoon after the interception, Goff found Kalif Raymond for 20 yards facing a third-and-16. Zappe got back to work finding Jakobi Meyers for a 17-yard gain on New England’s next drive. Detroit got off to a fast start on their next offensive position, as Jared Goff connected with Josh Reynolds off play-action for a 22-yard gain. Two plays later, Craig Reynolds broke off a 19-yard run to move the ball into New England territory. The offense then stalled, leading to a Nick Folk 37-yard field goal to give the Patriots the lead.

WR Quintez Cephus was also ruled out, but he has since been placed on the injured reserve with his foot malady. Detroit’s explosive offense will be without two of its most productive players, as running back D’Andre Swift (shoulder/ankle) and wide receiver DJ Chark (ankle) have officially been ruled out. With the Pats continuing to struggle in defending the run, Detroit’s ground attack will be their focal point on Sunday. Free Press sports writers share their predictions with the Detroit Lions' latest game against the New England Patriots on Sunday in Foxborough, Mass.
The pick: Lions 31, Patriots 28. The Lions feel the absence of D’Andre Swift this week against the ever-scheming Belichick. And the Lions still have that offense. The Lions can’t lose this game, can they? This is another winnable game for the Lions because their offense continues to roll. Bill Belichick is too good a coach to let the Lions run wild on offense like they have the first four weeks of the season.

It's the health and safety of Lions Saivion Smith. The safety, who was starting for the second time in his career, went down with an injury early in the game.
It’s just insane that they have to happen on the one week that the Lions do this. I just can’t see how the Lions could possibly dig themselves out of this hole in the shape they’re in. You can blame the strength and conditioning team all you want, but there’s not anti-injury lift or cardio that you can do to keep players from getting hurt. Instead the Lions went for it on fourth-and-9 and Jared Goff got sacked hard enough to fumble the ball and the Patriots ran it back for a touchdown. Just waiting until April of 2023 when the Lions are on the board in a probably pretty high spot. Of course, this had to be the game where the Lions made a healthy Amani Oruwariye a healthy scratch. You couldn’t blame me after Goff was statistically off to the best start for a Lions quarterback since Matthew Stafford’s 2011 season. It’s time to cut down on the aggression and try to take the points or punt. They had to do everything they could possibly do to be in games. Now I can’t confidently tell you that anyone will have job anywhere in the NFL next season. The safety, who was starting for the second time in his career, went down with an injury early in the game. [Detroit Lions](https://www.prideofdetroit.com/) did the thing that they just couldn’t do.
The Patriots defense shut out the top-scoring offense in the NFL on Sunday.
The Patriots need to be better in the red zone. Patriots nose tackle Davon Godchaux, defensive end Deatrich Wise, and linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley stopped a fullback dive attempt in its tracks to get off the field. He's trying to make too many moves in his releases at the line and wasting too much time. The Patriots dressed all six wide receivers on their active 53-man roster for Sunday's game, so someone was bound to be the odd man out in terms of playing time. The Patriots have themselves a three-down factor back in Stevenson. We tried to disrupt the timing a little bit. One of the key elements of the Patriots shutout performance against the top-scoring offense in the league was eliminating tight end T.J. In a game-changing play late in the first half, the Patriots dialed up man coverage on fourth-and-9. On the play, the Patriots stressed a cover-two zone with two vertical routes occupying the half-field safety on a good play design. Zappe gets to his two-high beater when the defense falls into cover two, sees the deep safety staying over the top of tight end Hunter Henry's route, and throws the perfect type of pass to get the ball over the flat defender and beat the deep safety. New England stopped all six of Detroit's fourth-down attempts, intercepted a Jared Goff pass near the end zone, and scored on a Matthew Judon strip-sack that was returned for a touchdown by safety Kyle Dugger. As they did during a similar stretch last season, the mostly mistake-free football that the Patriots played vs.

Injury report: It was a scary moment early Sunday for Lions defensive back Saivion Smith, who suffered a neck injury on the second defensive play of the game. He was down on the field for some time before being placed on a stabilizing backboard and taken via ambulance to a local hospital. Potentially a 6-3 score turned into 13-0 late in the second quarter, and the Lions never recovered. Instead of kicking a 49 or 50-yard field goal and attempting to trim the Patriots' 6-0 to 6-3, Campbell opted to go for it on 4th and 9. The Patriots recorded five field goals, a 24-yard touchdown pass from Zappe to wide receiver Jakobi Meyers and the fumble return touchdown by safety Kyle Duggar. But even that side of the football let them down Sunday in a lopsided 29-0 loss to the Patriots.

But the Patriots rookie cornerback continues to deliver on the field. He was certainly up to the task, helping Zappe tremendously with his production in the ground game. But if Zappe has to start again versus the Browns, the Patriots should feel a lot more comfortable after watching his effort Sunday. The second-year running back was an absolute workhorse, racking up a career-high 161 rushing yards on 25 carries. [Watch on YouTube](https://youtu.be/X2S7amnDvQA) Judon now has six sacks, the most of any player in Patriots history through five games.

Dan Campbell and the rest of the staff should have to answer for that. Not what you want to see out of the sophomore linebacker. Maurice Alexander: The former USFL star was signed to the active roster Saturday and leaned on exactly what got him into the NFL, bursting open a kickoff return to midfield. Although Reynolds was involved in an ugly play late in the game, it was the result of a botched handoff and not something you can place squarely on him. After an iffy start to the season, Sunday was a nice rebound for Anzalone. Stenberg continues to be the weak link along the offensive line and the biggest source of pressure for Jared Goff. He wasn’t stellar Sunday, but he was flying all over the field and was always around the ball. D’Andre Swift has a complete skillset but cannot stay healthy, and Jamaal Williams is durable and can pound the rock from end zone to end zone but has proven unreliable in the passing game. That included a well-timed pass breakup that showed his ability to play sideline to sideline, a promising thing to see out of the raw rookie. It’s just what Elliott needed to get himself back on track, as he’s sure to see more playing time ahead with injuries to the secondary. [Detroit Lions](https://www.prideofdetroit.com/) defense, an utter collapse by the offense, and a nasty injury bug in the secondary led to a bumpy ride and no points to show for as the team left Foxborough. Goff continues to show that he simply cannot operate without a clean pocket, and that’s simply not something you can do as an NFL quarterback.
